AWTY Returns: Necrodermus Fight- Orks vs IG
« on: October 16, 2010, 11:32:02 AM »
The Orks Make Progress on Necrodermus

On the Ork space cruiser "World Killa", AWTY Dakkatoof had just finished getting his cybork put back on and made to work. He had a little more cybork than last time but at least he could walk now. “Right then boys, lets get back down to the planet and get into the fight” AWTY spoke to his biker gang. The nobs rolled their bikes to the transporter and circled around the platform. AWTY rolled on into the center and yelled at the mek to pull the lever. With a circling motion and a gurgling sound the nob bikers and AWTY were sent down to the planet.

Meanwhile down on the planet

Big Mek Gitburna was trying to figure out how to weld this living metal stuff together. He had the wreckage of 3 necron monoliths as well as many small bits and pieces of all the toasters that they had killed. Yet no matter what he tried the stuff would not stay together. He was getting a bit frustrated that his dream of a living stompa would take longer than planned.

Just then a truck drove up and skidded to a stop just before running into Gitburn. A nob with a blue shirt got out and started yelling at him. “We think we found that book thing you was looking for” he said with a smile. Gitburna looked away from his welding project and turned to face the nob. “Where?” he asked. The nob replied “in the valley a few hills from here, but there is a problem”. “What problem” Gitburna said with a scowl thinking he was about to get extorted for more teef. “Them humies has beat us to it, and are digging it up right now”, the nob pointed in the general direction of the book, not so much as to indicate direction but to show off the rather large klaw that the nob had.

Gitburna was thinking, he thought he was thinking so hard that his brain was smoking, until he looked down and saw that he had left his burna on and had just cooked his squig. “Lets go get dat book before the humies can muk up our plans for da living stompa” all the while torn between wanting the book in the hope that it told the secret to welding living metal, and wanting to eat the freshly cooked squig. Gitburna started yelling for everyone to mount up and roll out, there was krumpin to do. He grabbed his cooked squig and jumped into the battle wagon with the flash gits and Badrukk. The whole army disappeared over the hill before Gitburna could take the first bite.

With a flash of light and the sound of running water AWTY and his bikers materialized into form. He looked around, nothing, not a single ork for as far as the eye could see. Of course he was in a valley so the hills didn’t help, but the fact of the matter was that the Ork army had disappeared. AWTY sat on his bike and wondered what to do next. Suddenly he heard booming coming from across the hills. “That’s gunfire boys, lets get stuck in” and the biker gang revved their engines and headed towards the sound of the fight, hoping they could get there before the fighting ended and they missed out on krumpin something.

This is a fight between Commissar Fuklaw and myself. The mission is “Surprise Attack” from the “Battle Missions” book. The victory conditions have been changed from kill points to holding on to the one objective, the mysterious book of the necrons. The IG will start deployed on the board and in position with the book in the center. The Orks will come on and try to take it from them. After all it was nice of the humies to do all that digging and find the book.

Set up

The orks moved on.

on one edge two trucks and the skorcha, on another the two battle wagons, on another two trucks and the rockit buggy, and on the fourth AWTY and his biker gang with the Green Baron. On the far edge one load of boys got out of their truck right in front of an infantry squad, and one truck dropped its plank on a chimera, the skorcha moved 13 to get a bead on another squad of guardsman.

The skorcha kills 5, the flash gitz fire at the command chimera, Badrukk gives himself 2 wounds but save, the rest of the shots bounced off, the kill kannon killed two of the junior command squad, and that squad went to ground. The blue shirts shoot their pistols killing 3, the bikers dakka gun a squad out of existence causing 12 wounds. Both the rockit buggy and the Green Baron fired at Valkyries and miss.

The blue shirt boys kill all the guardsman who killed one in return and consolidate 5 inches towards the center. The truck that planked the chimera blows it up, the explosion kills two blue shirt boys, 2 guardsmen from the 5 man squad, and 7 psyker passengers, who pass their LD.

The IG turn
Both valkyries move 12, one drops off its squad of vets behind the BW full of flamers, the tanks and command chimera move 6, the 3 man squad moves its flamer to line up on the blue shirt boys. The psychers move and then run towards the command chimera.

The vet squad got the order to bring it down and blew up the burna boys wagon, the KFF failed to stop any of the melta shots, the explosion killed 4 of the vets and 5 of the burnas who passed their LD. An autocannon wounds the Green Baron, another immobilized the truck with the red pants boys, the Leman Russ tank shot scattered to nowhere, the executioner killed two nob bikers and put a wo]und on the BP nob and the boss. The medusa got a second immobilize on the red pants truck taking the big shoota. The valkyrie glanced the rockit buggy and rolled a 1. The other valkrie shot rockets at the burna boys and killed 3 more flamers, the hell hound flamed the flamers and killed 6 more, the lone mek passed his LD. Lord Commisar Fuklaw’s chimera multilasered the Green Baron taking his final wound.

The vet squad assaulted the lone mek and killed him. Consolidating 4 towards the flash git wagon.

TURN TWO
The red pants boys get out of their truck and move towards the squad that immobilized their truck. The brown boot truck goes over and drops a plank on the colossus. The blue shirt boys move towards the medusa and 3 man squad, the gold boys truck drops them off on the sandbags of the center position. The boss and his bikers move towards the tanks, the git wagon moved 6 towards the center, the rockit buggy moved into a crater to get lined up on a valkyrie, the skorcha lined up on another squad.

The kill kannon got a direct hit on the command chimera, destroying it, the command squad gets out. The flash gits open fire, Badrukk acrually causes 2 wounds, and the gits kill all the rest of the command squad except Fuklaw and Korrigan. The skorcha kills another 5 guardsmen who pass their LD, the big shootas from the trucks shoot at the valkyries and all miss.

The blue shirt boys multi assault the colossus and the 3 man squad, the nob and one boy on the tank and the other 4 boys on the guardsmen, the colossus is destroyed by the nob and the orks kill the sgt and the flamer but the weapons team stays with one wound. The black boot boys kill the medusa, the nobs and AWTY cause 6 penetrating hits and one glance, the three penetratings destroy the executioner, and the three penetrating and the glance take all the weapons from the Russ and stun it. The gold boys jump into the sand pit with the junior command squad the guardsmen swing first (I am too cheap to give boys grenades) and they kill two boys, the remaining 10 kill the rest of the command squad taking the objective, the red pants wipe out the squad they attacked and consolidate 5 spreading out to try to avoid some template damage.

The IG turn
The manticore comes on in the corner and guardsman Noldar comes in near the skorcha. The two valkyries move for better position, the vet squad moves to the rear of the git wagon, the psychers move into coherency with Fuklaw, the hell hound moves to line up on red pants, the “shunned” Russ moves to block the path of the bikers.

The vets miss the git wagon, but the valkyrie destroys it, the gitz get out and pass their LD. The other valkyrie shoots the gitz and causes one wound. Infantry squad shoots the black boot truck getting a krunch so the black boots step out. The hell hound kills 3 red pants and 4 black boot boys. Guardsman Noldar gets a glance on the skorcha destroying the weapon. The manticore shoots at the gits, the first pie plate scattered way off but the second plate hit home and killed 4 of the gits (darn insta-death) making the manticore a high priority revenge target.

The blue shirt boys killed off the last guardsman (who wiffed btw) and consolidate 5 towards a truck.

TURN 3
The bikers move around the wall of dead tanks, 3 of them can now see the command squad. The skorcha tries to tank shock guardsman Noldar who death or glories and gets the glory as the skorcha explodes, wounding Noldar but he made his save. The blue shirts get into a truck and move towards the manticore. The flash gitz move towards the hell hound, and Gitburna moves towards the vet squad. The brown boots move towards the last squad of guardsmen, the gold boys pick up the objective and move towards the board edge, then run some more. The red boys move towards Noldar, and the rockit buggy tried to move out of the crater but immobilized itself.

The bikers dakka gunned the command squad causing a lot of wounds but they were all save except one on Korrigan. The flash gitz fired and glanced off both flamers from the hell hound.

Gitburna charges the vets. Why I didn’t just flamer them and get it over with… I guess Gitburna wants to be like a warboss, and wiffed all his I4 power weapon attacks, the vets hit back and cause 2 wounds of which he saves one, and then passes his LD. The black boots charge the last squad of guardsmen killing all of them except the weapons team for a loss of only 1 ork, the team failed its LD and got away running 5. The black boots consolidated towards the command squad. The red pants did not roll high enough for terrain and fail the charge against Noldar.

IG turn
Noldar moves through cover and meets a valkyrie that picks him up. The wounded Russ moves towards the gold boys. The weapons team fails their get back into the fight and runs another 5. The command squad moves toward the other valkyrie, but even with run run run, don’t get far enough to get aboard.

The valkyrie rockets the black boots killing two, who then fail their LD, the boss pole hits a boy who makes his save, and then they fail their LD again running towards the fleeing weapons team. The manticore drops a plate on the gold boys, it scatters an but still kills 2, who fail their pinning test. The other valkyrie drops a missile on the red pants boys killing all but three, who fail their LD, the boss pole kills another, and they refail their LD and start heading for the board edge.

The vets kill Gitburna but lose two, and consolidate 4 towards the valkyrie.

TURN FOUR
The bikers move around the dead tanks and line up on the command squad. The blue shirts bounce across terrain and dismount next to the manticore. The red pants keep running, and the black boots only run away 3 through the crater. The gitz move towards Noldars valkyrie.

The dakka guns kill Kerrigan and put 2 wounds on Fuklaw. Badrukk stuns, the valkyrie and the gitz all miss, but because of extra armor it is only shaken. The fleeing black boots shoot their sluggas at the vet squad killing the sgt, and the melta gun trooper failed his LD and fled off the board.

The blue shirts assault the manticore destroying it, and the bikers assault Fuklaw, the big choppas and painboy caused 7 wounds and Fuklaw rolled four 1’s and three 5’s for saves, so he died. The bikers consolidated 4 spreading out.

IG turn
The weapons team fled off the board. The psychers got on the valkyrie and it moved flat out towards the gold boys, the other valkyrie moved flat out to get near the gold boys, and the weaponless hell hound also moved flat out to get to the gold boys. The wounded Russ moved towards the gold boys.

The Russ fired its stubber and killed two gold boys who passed their LD.

TURN FIVE
The red pants fled off the board. The blue shirts got back into their truck and bounced back across the terrain. The bikers moved underneath the psychers valkyrie, the gitz moved towards Noldars valkyrie, the gold boys passed their LD and stood up.

The gold boys ran 5 more with the book towards the edge. The gitz and Badrukk again multi stun Noldars valkyrie that became shaken due to armor. The bikers dakka gunned the other valkyrie getting 5 glances and immobilized it. The valkyrie crashed and the two psychers got out unscathed and passed their LD.

The Bikers assaulted the two psychers and killed them consolidating towards the wounded Russ.

IG turn
The wounded Russ moves real close to the gold boys, the hell hound and valkyrie move to block the gold boys.

The heavy stubber kills two more gold boys.

He then rolled a 1, so the game ended. Victory to the Orks for finding the tablet. Too bad that the one ork who could have read it is now in the pain boy ward. I rolled a 7 head wound, so Gitburna won’t be of much use next fight as I am sure the necrons will be very interested in recovering the book.

I forgot to take pictures as the game grew to a close, so hopefully Commisar Fuklaw has a few of the end game pictures.

Towards the end there, we made a couple of mistakes, but it was after midnight and we had both worked that day, we just didn’t notice them then. I did not discover them ‘till I read my notes this morning while doing the battle report. We will just chalk it up to fog of war (and lack of coffee)

Commisar Fuklaw is an exceptional player and an even more excellent sportsman who fought on to the end. Even with minimal units he still had a plan, he was going to drop Noldar, then with the heavy stubber and valkyrie weapons kill the last 4 orks, then have Noldar take the objective and hopefully consolidate off the board. Yes folks it was that close, good thing he rolled a 1, because turn 6 could have been a surprise ending.

"The Imperial Guard Excavate the Necrodermis Codex"

The sonorous chanting of the Sanctioned Psykers in High Gothic unnerved Commissar Fuklaw. As he stood, arms folded nearby, Lord Commander Gabriel Korrigan puffed on the remains of a still smoldering lho-stick. Thunder boomed somewhere in the distance, momentarily drowning out the low rumbling of the gathered vehicles. The atmosphere was stale, but breathable -- no respirators necessary this time. It was almost too sterile, the Commissar noted, as if the air had been expunged of any impurities. The smell of petrol and smoke from the nearby exhaust of the excavation machinery atop a small rise was almost a welcome change from the blasted landscape and starless sky.

"I'm not sure how I feel about this, Gabriel," the Commissar murmured, with a familiarity that no other officer would dare take. "Being sent to this corpse of a world with little more than a set of coordinates from the Adeptus Mechanicus. What exactly are we looking for?"

Lord Commander Korrigan stubbed out his lho stick on the open entry ramp of a nearby Chimera, then flicked it to the ground. Somehow, the action of littering the dead world with refuse seemed a very human thing to do.

"I don't know, John," Korrigan replied to the Lord Commissar with an equal degree of familiarity. "The men have been digging for hours. They haven't found anything yet. But what the Techpriests want, the Techpriests get."

Fuklaw grunted sourly. "I should like to have Guardsmen doing more than playing archaeologist. A Guardsman's place is on the front lines."

Nearby, the Guardsmen of the Brava Centauri Fighting 111th stood at parade rest, watching the excavation take place.

"A Guardsman follows orders," chuckled Lord Commander Korrigan. "That is their duty to the Emperor, of co--"

"Sir!" shouted the Platoon Commander from the nearby excavation site. "We've just discovered something."

The platoon commander's command squad produced a small artifact which strongly resembled a book. The cover was made of an oily, metallic substance that made Commissar Fuklaw feel uneasy simply looking at it.

"What is it?" inquired Lord Commander Korrigan, drawing closer to the excavation site.

"We know not, my lord. It was precisely where the Techpriests told us it would be. Four black columns, and something like an altar with this upon it, thirty meters down. It's probably been buried there for millenia."

Fuklaw spoke up: "This symbol," he said, as he pointed to an inlaid green geometric figure inscribed in the black symbol upon the cover, "is the symbol of the heretical star gods of ancient, fallen civilizations. This book is likely some sort of record or codex of some long-extinct xeno civilization. We should get this book back to the Techpriests. At the same time, we should make this information known to the Ordo Xenos that they might determine what exactly the Adeptus Mechanicus want with a heretical tome such as this. My eyes are filled with revulsion at the very sight of it. Were we not under orders from the Adeptus Mechanicus, I would order a Guardsmen to incinerate this blasphemous tome immediately."

"Sir..." spoke up the Platoon Commander, attempting to get the attention of the two high ranking officers. A look of urgency seemed written on his face.

"John," Lord Commander Korrigan said, patting him on the shoulder of his red greatcoat. "Your dedication to the Emperor and the fight against heresy is nigh unto legend. But surely you can't be suggesting that the Techpriests themselves are guilty of some kind of xeno heresy."

"Sir?" repeated the Platoon Commander a bit louder.

Commissar Fuklaw was unfazed. "If the Techpriests are involved in some sort of tech-heresy, I will discover it. Ancient xeno gods have no place in the eyes of the Emperor. I shall determine the source and the meaning of this. If I must sentence every Techpriest I encounter to the firing line for heresy until I get a straight answer from one of them, I shall do so..."

"Sir!" shouted the Platoon Commander, now with great urgency.

Commissar Fuklaw wheeled about, his face a white-hot mask of rage as his seething fury at the possibility of heresy within the Imperium found a redirected target in the form of a junior officer. The Lord Commissar's gloved fingers brushed the metal snap on his boltpistol's holster. "It is exceedingly unwise to interrupt a conference by your superior officers, Lieutenant. I hope, for your sake, that whatever you are about to say is of GREAT importance."

The Platoon Commander quivered, lowering his eyes respectfully. "Begging your pardon, Lord Commissar. It's just... why have the Psykers stopped chanting?"

With the excavation machines silent, it was clear. The Psykers had gone completely silent. The only sound from them was the faint flapping of cloth from their robes.

"Overseer!" Fuklaw roared at the Guardsman assigned to keep watch on the Psykers at times. "What's happened?"

"I don't know, Lord Commissar, they just stopped chanting the Emperor's Litany," answered the Overseer, quaking in fear at the red-cloaked Commissar and the Lord Commander.

The Commissar leaned in close to one of the pale-faced Psykers. "What's wrong with you, mutant?" he demanded. "Why have you stopped chanting the Emperor's Litany?"

The Psyker stared back with a distant, absent expression. His neural implants hissed and clicked. Pale lips barely moved, exposing yellowing teeth. "Death comes. The sea of green shall give birth to the silver abomination. The galaxy shall become a river of red. You cannot stop it."

The Overseer reached into his pack, drawing out a syringe. "I apologize, Lord Commissar, he's overloading his neural implants, I'll just..."

As if reacting to an injury, each of the Sanctioned Psykers cried out in an ear-splitting scream. The Commissar now drew his bolt pistol from his holster, raising it directly at the head of one of the shrieking Psykers.

But then came another great sound, so great that it drowned out even the Psykers, a screeching of clattering metal and roaring engines, and a great shout that sent chills down the spines of every Guardsman present. They knew the shout from their training.

"WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!"

"GREENSKIN AMBUSH!" roared Lord Commander Korrigan. "Overseer! Get those Psykers into the Chimera! Commissar Fuklaw, with me! Valkyries, take off and fly perimeter! All Guardsman, to arms! Stand by to repel attackers!"

WOW. What an epic game.

So, as you have no doubt read, I played Skeetergod on Friday night and was defeated. It was an excellent battle, probably the most challenging I've ever had to do. I came in at a distinct disadvantage, since I had to have my deployment area very limited, and he got first turn, since it was part of the scenario. As many of you may know, nothing makes an Imperial Guard player happier than getting first turn and good positioning. He was able to assault turn 1 and ruinate my Psykers, which made me very sad. I had such magnificent, wonderful plans for them involving lowering resolve and making Ork boys fail morale saves.

I would not say he "obliterated" me -- OK, yes I would. I had one scoring unit left. But I DID inflict quite a bit of damage to him! But he definitely had the upper hand. With a few tactical changes, or another turn, the Guard could have emerged triumphant with Marbo grabbing the Necron book and running! But there are other times, and always more Guardsmen to recruit. The turnover rate is extremely high.

I was as shocked as Skeetergod was that my Veteran Guardsmen who previously had taken down a Battle Wagon filled with his infamous 15 Burnaboyz managed to drop a Big Mek in Assault. That was a pure blessing by the Emperor upon my dice, which I must now purity seal, I think, in commemoration of that event. I think the surviving Meltavet deserves a medal, also, which I might be able to greenstuff. Either that, or he deserves a trip to the firing line, because he ran off the board. He was definitely the MVP for the game, though. Guardsman Noldar (Marbo) was a close contender though, with that gutsy Death or Glory with a Meltabomb.

Imagine, if you will, a Guardsman commando staring defiantly at a tank as it rolls toward him, then slapping a Meltabomb on the hull and diving for cover, not only blasting the Skorcha into a flaming wreck, but not taking a single hit. And THEN HE GOT TO THE CHOPPAAAAAA. Valkyrie, actually. That's why he's Noldar, folks. He's not a Rambo anagram. He's an Arnold anagram. I like to think that after he blew up the Skorcha, he made some weak one liner, "YOU SHOULDN'T PLAY WITH FIRE. YOU'LL JUST GET BURNED IN THE END."

I made a few tactical mistakes during the game. I definitely should have held my artillery in reserves and rolled them in later on the other side of the board from the Manticore to make Skeetergod have to chase two barrage groups at once. They died way too easily. Actually, given the situation, I probably should have held most of my vehicles in reserve. The deployment was way too packed. While Skeetergod was attacking the tarpit of squishy Guardsmen, then the tanks would roll in and start swatting the Biker Nobs. The Valkyrie Melta Assault on the Battlewagon went off exactly as I planned. Unfortunately, it involved a lot of Guardsmen deaths from shrapnel, not as planned.

Some rules stuff I discovered after the fact: Valkyries actually have TWO rocket pods they can fire, not one (two large blast templates, resolved separately). I usually run Vendettas, so that's my fault for not knowing my army better. Leman Russ Sponsons are two weapons, not one, and at Combat Speed, only one weapon other than the main cannon can fire. You have to buy them together, but they're not one weapon. Everyone I know has always treated sponsons as one weapon, but those people are also wrong. On the other hand, they don't get destroyed together, so that's a nice bonus. I also forgot my 4+ cover saves for my Valkyries after going flat out on the last turn when the Flashgitz shot at my Valkyrie carrying Noldar. Whoops. Well, that's OK, I still needed to move flat out, so no shooting or disembarking was allowed that turn anyway.

I've played maybe 7 full 40k games, so I'm still learning the rules, and each game, I learn something new -- it makes a lot more sense in practice than it does in the rulebooks. Once again, thanks to Skeetergod. I hope to play you again soon and good luck against the Necron horde! When the new Codex comes, I may be joining their number as well...

Hey, maybe the Painboyz decide to test out the Necrodermis welding on Commissar Fuklaw. Then I can run him with the Yarrick profile, and give him all kinds of crazy upgrades!

After the game, Skeetergod and I shook hands like sportsmen and congratulated each other on a long battle well fought. I hope I made him work for the victory and provided at least something of a challenge. He went home, and I scooted off to my favorite late night diner (as it was about 12:15 AM!) to get my favorite omelet! :)

I just looked it up. You're right. My mistake. Skimmer transports have different rules than regular ones do.

In retrospect, it probably would have worked out better for me to only go 12. The non-shaken one (the one with the Psykers) would have been able to fire its rockets 24" at the nob bikers, and it might have been out of assault range. I'm attributing this one to my own inexperience.

Like I said there were some mistakes, but we did not notice them in the game. It was a lack of coffee (fog of war) and the late night made little rule errors a non-issue. The game played well even with the errors, and that is the important part, having a great game that tells the story.

PS; had I known you were going for food I would have gone with you, as it was I went home and ate leftover rice and gravy, with no coffee. ...

Nice friggen Batrep, in fact its so nice that I am responding as I read (two pages open - for true simulcast - man I love technology, even if the bio-mass built it). I am loving the pics and pass on a Nice Paint Job to the IG guy, as his stuff is looking good. The orkies also look nice and orky, so well done to you to SKEETRGOD.

The lists (orky at least) looks great, Flach Gits with a KoS, nice mix dude and I am also considering adding both Burnas and/or Flashgits to me mob, as I have a Battlewagon that is almost ready to paint so it will need something to go inside. I might also have to alter me Big Mek, as the burna looks better than the P-Klaw on paper, but I am struggling as the PK looks so cool in real life even if he usually dies before he ever gets to use it. The IG have a nice mix of armour and footsloogers etc, at least its not a leaf blower but I don't understand enough IG to know how good or bad the balance is overall, or to understand how the nuanced work, I do like the look of it though.

Nice set up etc, and the Orks did well on entry, as I often find my Planks are more for show than for actually doing anything for me. The GreenBaron went down early; but he did draw fire, so he did his job. And the IG seam to have had a pretty good response to the ork entry.

The Orks actually have a fair bit of shooting (something I lack with me mob) so I am really leaning towards something like you have done with the Flashgits, I have some 20+ knobs hanign aroudn on sprues so I could do some conversions to get them into da mob. The orks seam to be slowly winning the game of attrition due to en masse shooting and combo assaults so I really like the way your  mob was working together. But the IG Vets also seam to be holding their own in regard to payback, while the armour seams to be doing all or nothing.

Looked like a great game overall, and running past midnight and making mistakes is not nearly as embarrasing as the mistake I made with the Necrons vs Orks (Dread on 11 figures should have failed; but I was in such a rush I asked him how many Knobs and he said 10, so I used their LD... we both forgot to include the bloody Warboss that made the squad fearless -- oops, I feel dumber by the day). Your opponent was a great sport to stick it out, as victory can often be grasped in the late game with only a couple really good dice rolls. Besides the most important rule is that you both had fun (I just read the responses from your opponent -- so the well done can go straight to him in person for the paint and his gameplay).

Cheers to you both as I love the write-ups from both of you, and I wish I could game vs either of you.

Like I said there were some mistakes, but we did not notice them in the game. It was a lack of coffee (fog of war) and the late night made little rule errors a non-issue. The game played well even with the errors, and that is the important part, having a great game that tells the story.

PS; had I known you were going for food I would have gone with you, as it was I went home and ate leftover rice and gravy, with no coffee. ...

Oh, yeah! I should've said something, sorry! Next time, definitely! I usually go to Flap Jacks, they're open all night on Friday and Saturday. :)
