Scratch Built - Slaaneshi Soul Grinder
« on: August 3, 2009, 01:24:40 AM »

Here is the design for a Custom Soulgrinder that I am sculpting to join a Slaanesh "Counts as" Daemon Army.  The goal is a 5,000 point army using custom sculptures and conversion to create a Slaanesh theme replacement model for virtually every unit in Codex Chaos Daemons.  The projects pretty far along, so i didn't want to replicate the entire thing here so provide a link for those who might be interested: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/235930.page

Design sketches for Soulgrinder #1:

So...I've been thinking about the Soul Grinder counts as model, and have decided to go with Gameandwatch's and The_Chaplain's excellent ideas, and came up with um....this wonderfully daemonic homage to motherhood.

This is the basic idea the engine was formed from the body of an eldar Farseer.  Here's the idea engine is a womb where slaaneshi daemons form.  An idea stolen from the Ultramarine Omnibus, where the Iron Warriors used grotesquely deformed women to birth new fully grown space marines! Ewe!   :o

And no the tooth maw is not what your thinking... it didn't even occur to me until my wife pointed it out.   Still I think it fits for Slaanesh. Disturbing, no?

While looking through online pictures of pregnant women for research I came across, this:

Apparently, its done with a temporary dye called Henna.  The important thing is that is got me thinking a painting and intricate Eldar/Slaaneshi design on the belly.

So, anyway that's one of my Soulgrinder ideas.  Things to do:

1.  The drawing was done to scale so all I have to do is photo-copy it to use as a guide for my armature.
2.  The design is not chaotic enough so I'll need to work on some detailing sketches.
3.  Since the sculpture is rather large I'll be using gray super sculpey firm and casting the final model.

I need feedback of the design:

- I've drawn her with 8 arms, but as pointed out six would be better for Slaanesh.  Which pair of arms should I remove?  The ones on the ground supporting her weight have to remain.  While the ones cradling her belly are fundamental to the idea.

- It needs some method of movement legs like a defiler, or perhaps a winged dais, or something?

- I've considered have one set of ares either clutching Slaanesh iconography or having sculpted flames coming from the palms of the hands.

- While the mouth is currently open should she be either blind folded or gagged, S&M style?  To much?

- How should I represent the Soulgrinder's weapons?

Please be brutal in your critiques, I can take it.

Personally, the design is good, but the theory behind it doesn't sit well with me for a number of reasons.

1. Soul Grinders are the product of Daemons being fused with the machines of the Forge of Souls and swearing the Pact. And, while the machine gradually shifts to better personify the Daemon, the Daemon is still 50%+ machine at that point. I see 0% machine in your diagram.

2. This seems more for a Keeper, and not a Soul Grinder. And, while your dimensions may be accurate, you have the unfortunate problem of people accepting this in games. It doesn't look like a Soul Grinder in any vague sense, it doesn't LOOK like it is a vehicle, a WALKER no less(I see a Daemon that looks like a pregnant woman who just reached her "O")

Thanks for the reply.   ;D  At the moment the design does indeed appear very organic.  I will be correcting that that with a little inspiration from Giger and Brom.  What would you suggest to improve the design, and make it feel more like a vehicle? What sorts of machine elements would you like to see included?  What is she were mounted on a dais propelled by mechanical crab legs?  I'm open to pretty much anything at this point, as I am still fishing for ideas.

A very interesting idea. It definitely needs to be machined-up a little bit, or maybe reconsider using it as a daemon prince.

And the tooth-maw really does look like a you-know-what, at least at this point. While it's definitely fitting, and mature gamers would probably be fine with it, you might get some problems from kids and/or parents that play (Same problem with the breasts, too). No reason not to do it, just something to think about.

Looks good so far :-)

I like the diagram you drew of a spider woman. That would work much better. But this giant monstrocity looks like FWs GUO gone female. I'd prefer to see spider lady than this used as a SG. As for the diagram being used as a SG, if made, its too organic through and through. Need to start with the base of the legs and work your way up.

Absolutely love the Idea.

A few pointers tho. Grab the soul grinder model or a defiler and throw away the existing daemon.

Then either mount yours at a 45% angle, on a small plinth at the front. Then use some Geiger esk cables to integrate her into the machine. Using the head and her back fins as conduit to get her to be part of the machine.

Or leaver her as she is looking upwards But make her eyes closed. Then use some pans labyrinth style hand eyes, You already have 2 forward pointing palms. They would be perfect. Then do the gieger esk conduits to integrate her into the system.

Revisions yeah!

Okay I got lots of great feedback on this from various boards.

I need to thanks the following people for the input on this model:

Gameandwatch: for the idea of using a pregnant machine/daemon...inspiring!
The_chaplain: for the references he provided for the pose, which I have stolen shamelessly.
HK-47: for suggesting keeping the up raised hands to represent the Harvester.
Deraj:  for the idea of shackling the supporting arms.
Khanaris: for the hard critique on the belly mouth looking far to pornographic.
Qui-Gon Jinn: for the hard critique on the soul grinder needing to be machine-like, and far less organic.
Nesbitt_bub1: for the idea of rotating the model 45 degrees, and Gigeresque tubing, and a few others not incorporated here yet.
Sidstyler: for being honest enoguh to say dude that just is wrong.
And everyone who's provided me feedback past, seriously thanks guys.

I'll comment on these more but I gotta get to work.  Later!

If you go HR Giger style let the gun come out of a Vagina like slit and tubes that look like alien penises, HR Giger put always lots of those drawings (like alien, the eggs and so on)

Have you no form of decency Jehan? I mean, yes, its Slaanesh, but outright vag-cannons is a step too far in my opinion. Personally, he needs to take it back to sketches and start with the base of the model, and then work the top out.

Don't get me wrong, I understand Slaanesh desires too, but while Slaanesh is affectionately termed the "porn" god there are some things that are just too much that should be rendered in model form.

Nope, if he is not playing official tournaments, then the sky is the limit in my book, i never understood when it is extremely decaying when it is a Nurge or lots of Gore and violence when it is Khorne, i never hear complaints, only when there is nudity or it is sexual there are complaints

I would drop the legs, and then fuse that torso into a soul grinder body.

Eh, add some blue-tac pasties for the duration of the game and I'm sure you'd be ok in a public function. In my experiance the secret to getting away with nudity is to keep the sexyness under control. You want to keep it with enough artisticness in it so that the nudity is merely a part of the overall look and style and not about giving the viewer wood. So far, I think these designs are doing that fairly well.

- I decided to have an actual barrel would prevent possible "what you see is what you get" disputes.  She'll still have the toothed mouth, but I'm going to make a removable techie piece to cover it, in mixed company. Ahhh....compromise!  ;D

So, anyway.  I still need to come up with a way to represent: plaguebearers and nurglings.
Now, Slaves to Darkness mentions the "Tormented" which are kinda these slaaneshi zombie-slave things.  That got me thinking about converting grave ghouls and putting them in gimp-suits: leather hoods and loin cloths mostly. The Sisters and Inquisition already have "church sanctioned Gimps...excuse me...arco-flagellants. And Slaanesh is not one to be outdone with regard to fetish.   ::)

For Plague Bearers, why not something like a person who is adicated to hard drugs. Covered in Track marks, and sores.

For nurglings, you could have swarms of tiny demonette like creatures. One of the old chaos familiar models was a small demonette (previous version). If you could get hold of one, copying it would be no problem.

And as for plague bearers, they don't actually need to be anything like what the original concept for the rules were. They only need to represent the rules as they are. As such, 'mobs' of rapturous devoties would work well.

Okay, here are two more Soul grinder concept designs I came up with:

I hate to warp your minds and run; but  I'm taking the wife to the Chicago Comic-con today.
