tears? help with chapter fluff
« on: February 22, 2007, 01:31:59 PM »
Greetings (first post!)

haveing got back into the hobby after almost 15 years! I've been messing around with different gw chapters, but have never been satisfied with the result.
So the time has come to make my own chapter and im looking for inspiration! I have a general idea but need opinions.
I have 3 names i thought of
1st,emperors tears
2nd,imperial tears
3rd,crimson tears(i thought i was being clever with that one but forgot there's a book called that!)

i also though that it could be a chapter made up from surviving victims of planets that have been virus bomed or destroyed by the impirium because the planets could not be saved in battle(sort of gaunts ghost rip off but with marines lol) any iders to help me make a solid fluff base to my chapter?

That looks like a pretty cool chapter there Bishops Finger.  I especially like the banner.  I am partial to the 'Emperors Tears' myself.  The other two seem like somewhat arbitrary attempts to make them sound like Imperial Fist successors (which I really don't have a problem with seeing as how I play Imperial Fists and my own DYO chapter is the Imperial Aquilas.)  the color scheme is quite 'Imperial' Fisty though.   And the Crimson Tears has a nice ring.

I'll stick with Emperor's Tears for my vote.

I like the fluff that you have so far.  A chapter that only recruits from the survivors of holocausts and beseiged planets and bombed out worlds and this and that sounds pretty tough.  I would try to expand out from there.

What sort of actions would a chapter of this sort of makeup excell in and gear themselves towards? Couple of ideas:   Seige specialists?  A sort of Death Guardesque resilience that lends itself towards fighting in toxic environs?  Fey, knight type SMs, afraid of nothing, fighting to prevent what has happened in their pasts to other innocents?  or perhaps the opposite:  Fey, knight type SMs, born out of fire, prepared to mete out fire in an effort to scourge the Imperium of the unpure?  I think you could go a lot of different places from what you already have.  Start with one small idea, like you have, and then branch out.  Other good things to help you flesh out your chapter is thinking about geneseed and location.  Sounds like a cool chapter.

Welcome to 40konline!

Edited my first post..Must check my spelling next time!
Cheers for reply web ghost your first paragraph pretty much sums up what i have thought to(about the imperial fisty thing)
loved your ideas about what actions they would take,it has got the brain cogs going.
Maybe they would be suited to last ditch holding actions and extractions, it would be different to have a chapter that was expert at removing itself and others from impossible situations.

does this fly in the face of what the marines are all about though

i think it holds quite well actualy .

for instance they are the marines left to hold off a citadel that is going to fall but they are determined to kill as many enemies as possible before giving it up and such

Great ill stick with that..Trouble with fluff is that its all been done before, its very hard not to rip somthing off or end up with a generic blandness or over the top! Mind you the whole warhammer world is kind of a generic mishmash so i guess i shouldn't worry to much heh.

I kind of like the idea of having a mobile base/fortress(having recruited from now dead planets)
as to geneseed im not sure, do like the fists though the color could go with blood angles or fists.
Unless some other neat idea comes along

thanks bf

...excellent.  I love the idea of a SM chapter nobly appearing out of nowhere to rescue/extract civilians, beleaguered allies, etc., etc. out of the most dire situations.

As for gene seed, I think either of the two you mentioned would work well.  The parallels to the fists are apparent in their name and colors as well as the stubborn and intractable traits of the Fists and their successors.  The Blood Angels angle could work as well.  Perhaps a permeation of the Black Rage?  Where the SMs that are the most effected are sent to the front line and have some sort of 'Hold At All Costs' sort of thing going on?  Though there is always something to be said of unknown origins.  Making chapters that have pure geneseed from 1st founding chapters seems a bit over the top to me sometimes.

I don't know if you've seen this or not, but it is helpfull for getting a general idea of how you want to paint your marines.

I prefered Emperor's Tears myself but there you go! Anyway that's a great paintjob you've done too. They look like they'd be at home in post apocalyptic terrain! The fluff you've got is all round pretty solid too, more than most people ever get going.

By the way, excellent username/avatar  :D

The whole story sounds great, I have but one issue with your fluff and its terribly minor. NOTHING survives virus bombing, plus virus bombed planets are ones that are to taken by chaos to save. Other than that though it looks way cool and I like the idea
Marines Don't Retreat, We Just Attack In A Different Direction

I don't care that you have a 3+ armor save and lasguns don't have an AP, I have 300 rapid fire lasgun shots to slowly melt through your power armor. ALL HAIL THE IG HORDE!

Yeah i dont think i really meant survivors that have been saved after the virus bombing from the planet, lack of explanation on my part sorry.
I was thinking more of saved remains of planetary defense/civil forces that have been evacuated. ;D

i like the idea of the emperors tears grabing recruits from last ditch fighters that have decided to fight alongside them, they would have plenty of chances to observe possible recruits in action

I love the developing fluff there.  I'm a sucker for last stands and underdog fights, so you got me hooked to start off.  I like the Emperors Tear's as a name as it really ties the fluff of their mission to the way they recruit, very badass.  Love the paint job too.  Though to be honest with you when i clicked on the pics before reading the rest of the thread i immediately thought this has to be a BA derived chapter, the Red drop on the pauldrons is so iconic. (but i'm a BA player so i may be biased.)  Love the thing about watching the last ditch fighters for potential recruits which makes sense that since they specialize in last ditch efforts and are space bound they would have A) a high causualty rate, B) a constant supply of pontential neophytes/servitors/pilots/servants.   I can't wait to hear more about them.
When the winds of change blow hard enough, the most trivial of things can become deadly projectiles.

About four nights ago I was trying to think of a name for my guard army and or renaming my space marines. Thus Emperors Tear came about, but I see that it has already been taking bastage /die. I would say that it has a great underling story thou. Thus great work on it. My tear was going to be a aqua like look /blue wash look. I just might keep going because I live in Texas and this army will never see a GT. As it is my old SM army and I would just love to bring the Guard to the GT. Now I just need a new name........
The Daemonic leads to two crimes. You turn away from the path of righteousness and I just crapped a big one in the bowl again, anybody know the location for the scrubber. Hey brother bethel, wait come back i need the scrubber dammit. oh ya... you abandon the Emperor as the object of your Devotion. For the first, death is merely a just retribution. The second is Heresy so terrible that no punishment can be Sufficient. Dam, maybe I did find a sufficient punishment. swirly, ya...

Just so you know, it's considered bad form to bring back a dead thread, and it's just worse when it's yours and you're not really adding anything to it.  I appreciate you want to work on your chapter, but this thread was more than a month old.
