The premise of this thread is simples: if you come across something that's cool, and you want to share it, feel free to post here, with a link (if it's on the web) or just write a post explaining what you want to share.
I'll go first:

Rap Battles of History are pretty great. I think my favorite is the Einstein-Hawking one - or the Beethoven-Bieber.

Tesla vs Edison vs. Tesly was also very well done. I actually had to visit a webside that explains references in songtexts to get them all.

The most expensive computer game pack ever? (http://www.game.co.uk/en/saints-row-iv-super-dangerous-wad-wad-edition-180208?pageSize=20&searchTerm=super-dangerous-wad-wad-edition)
How about the cheapest? (https://www.humblebundle.com/)
The Humble Bundle is actually pretty cool. If you donate more than $1, you get the keys for 6 games, most of which are on steam, but the odd one is only available on origin. If you donate more than the average (currently around $4.50), they add in two more games.
The bundle for right now is:
- Dead Space
- Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box
- Crysis 2
- Dead Space 3 (origin only)
- Mirror's Edge
- Medal of Honour
- Battlefield 3 (donate the average)
- Sims 3 + expansions (donate the average)
The idea is that because you are donating to charity, ideally you will donate more for it to be worth while. But if you are a cheap gamer, you can get 6 games for $1, 8 games for $5, and the total package of all 8 is priced around $215.
-
Humble Bundle also does a yearly ebook selection using the same method. You get to pick up some excellent material for every cheap even when over bidding to help the charities.

On the whole, I do prefer this song to that nonsense by Alan Thicke.

While I tend to agree that The Official Site for Alan Thicke (http://www.alanthicke.com/) is not a useful source for musical entertainment, I think you may have meant his offspring, Robin Thicke. ;)
EDIT: Upon further reflection, the idea of seeing Alan Thicke get twerked over by a starlet does fill me with a perverse sense of curiosity. It would certainly be something cool to see on the internet. Or at least morbidly eyebrow raising. Either way.

This video here is a musical remix of stuff that was said in an episode of a Let's Play show called Game Grumps (some of you may have seen it.) In it, Jon (aka JonTron) proclaims his victory over his rival and co-host, Aryn (aka. animator Egoraptor). It's actually genuinly good, in my honest opinion.

That way I'd be there when the machines finally turn on people, and the first Terminator is born. Seriously, people. Gladiator Robots always kill their masters. It's in every single sci-fi involving robots. Swift death is preferable to the miserable existence that follows the Robocolypse.
-
well if we take robot per the term indeed they kill there master most of the time, but what they have is more a power armor (kinda big) armed than actual robot, they are still piloted by human so not much risk of them turning against us yet :D

Kung Fury is out, though they didn't get enough Kickstarter dough to make a feature length film. I'm sure most people lacked confidence that it was anything but a prank, maybe they'll get more money now to complete the movie now that the featurette has been published. I love that he wants the robots to punch each other.
I also think that's the most ridiculous thing ever.
-
Ridiculous, yes. But he's got a point. If you want humanoid shaped tanks to shoot at each other, just ditch the humanoid and shoot tanks at each other.
Melee combat would be a more entertaining. Power claws, buzz saws, cutting torches, pile drivers sending a spike into your opponent... that would be awesome. Plus that tests the robot's reflexes, power-to-weight, and so many more things than just thickness of armour and who bought a bigger gun.
-
Oh, I agree! But this statement:
If you want humanoid shaped tanks to shoot at each other, just ditch the humanoid and shoot tanks at each other.
Is (1) totally true and (2) why we will never, ever actually build humanoid fighting robots. I mean, except for fun.
-
Well, never say never. Humanoid warmachines do have some advantages over your basic tank. The biggest one is probably mobility. Tanks do not do well in mountain terrain, so having something that can bring the payload of a tank up a mountain by having the flexibility of a bipedal mount is probably something the military will look into.
The issue right now is that our level of technology is limits the production of mechs...

Tanks do not do well in mountain terrain, so having something that can bring the payload of a tank up a mountain by having the flexibility of a bipedal mount is probably something the military will look into.
The technology and equipment needed to keep it from falling down will always trump the advantages. I mean, hell, you can just make yourself a better armored helicopter or something. Walking upright is such a pain in the ass. There's a very good reason so few animals in nature do it.
Maybe if they made them quadrapedal--maybe then. I still think the technology to get a tank to do better in rough terrain would be a much smaller challenge than the technology needed to make it walk around on legs.
-
Also, the idea is to be low to the ground for added concealment. Having a walker is just another way of putting a giant "please shoot me" sign on your war machine. Physics will still screw you though, ground pressure for a walker soon gets to be highly disadvantages for a war machine. As we saw in WW II, even tanks have serious scale up issues soon enough.
-
let us dream that some day we have something that will work on two feet or more and be more efficient than a tank :) i don't think it's going to happen anytime soon but my manga/mecha fan heart is telling me he want to see those in live army ^^
-
And then an infantryman with a armour piercing weapon shoots a leg joint and ruins the entire beslubbering thing.
Granted, that's already a problem with wheels and treads, but at least the consequence there is "merely" immobility, and not falling over.
There is *one* advantage I could imagine, and that is as a kind of rapid, lightly armoured heavy weapons platform, acting in support of infantry and mech-inf units. And then there's the BigDog robot from DARPA, which I think looks promising, sure, it's just an automated pack mule, but honestly that is probably a lot more useful than giant robots constantly threatening to trip over due to ground pressure, exposed joints, complex (and thus error-prone) machinery and a high center of gravity.
I mean, the jerry-can revolutionized warfare, the Panzer VII Maus didn't.
-
But it may be more feasible to surround those vulnerable joints with proper armouring.
Anyways, the Japanese have accepted the challenge! So giant robot deathmatch is on!
-
More armour, less mobility, more logistical cost to run. Which is why we should all agree on Flying Death Drones.
-
Still more mobile than a tank.
Hey, you know what... stop beslubbering with my dreams of one day seeing a legitimate mech!
-
Still more mobile than a tank.
Well, no actually. Take a 40 tonne tank and compare it to a 40 tonne walker. The tank will be far more nimble. The Russians do beslubbering armoured ballet with theirs. It's physics and physics is a son of a be-atch.
Hey, you know what... stop beslubbering with my dreams of one day seeing a legitimate mech!
You'll get nothing and like it or you'll get twice as much nothing tomorrow. Sir_Godspeed's armour frames and cyberbots are far more interesting and likely. Also damn cool to watch in the videos.
-
do you not get the point of a dream perhaps >< it's a dream it's perfectly fine to like it hate it want it to happened without any real reason.
I expect that some day our ammunition will be take so far that the tank armor won't be of any use anymore, that's where i think walker might become an alternative because since anyway if you are it you go down, let's at least try to avoid the bullet before it hits you.
And man who needs a reason to see a giant robot on the battlefield, just for the coolneess is good enought.
-
Oh, yes--I think *modestly sized* walkers are possible. Armored frames, as Goodspeed suggests, or powered armor (like in District 9 or Avatar). Much bigger than that? No way.
I'm very sorry, GML. I really am. They *would* be cool.
-

Armour vs ammunition have been going at it for thousands of years. I doubt it'll stop anytime soon.
Defence goes like this:
Don't get seen.
Don't get hit.
Don't get hurt.
Don't stay dead.
Large walkers are just *very* obvious. John Ringo, before he went full crazy town, had a decent set of novels where he explained why mostly man sized powered armour was successful while other designs weren't and basically it comes down to not being obvious on the battlefield. Camouflage (electronic as well as material) only goes so far when you're going stomp stomp stomp about the place. His powered armour was still heavy enough to fall through floors as well if they didn't play close attention to what they were doing.
Which always made BattleTech so much fun. "I *can't* hit him sir! He's metres away!" ;)
-
I should add that while I don't think giant mechs will work in real life, I love them in fiction - even the more realistic type.
Keep that dream alive. :D
-
I still believe that part of the belief that mechs won't work is because of our current technology limits the idea.
75 years ago, people thought it wouldn't be possible for planes for go faster than the speed of sound.
120 years ago, people thought man would never fly.
150 years ago, shoulder mounted automatic weapons were not considered possible.
250 years ago, sailing a ship absent sails was thought to be impossible.
Technology advances, and what we currently believe is impossible may very well be the direction the future is headed. Hell, the fact that people are building these machines now only goes to show that there is interest in making them viable. As long as people continue to work on improving the designs, I think it is quite possible that we see a design that actually works in the next 50 years.
-
Granted, but they also believed that people could shapeshift, communicate with the dead and transform lead into gold easily, and achieve eternal life, so by the same logic a lot of what we believe might be possible might flat out be impossible or very hard.
-
Also, impossible to build is an entirely separate argument than saying they'd be tactically useless or redundant. :)
-
Also, impossible to build is an entirely separate argument than saying they'd be tactically useless or redundant. :)
I'm just saying that there is potential for it to work, it is just beyond our understanding as of this moment. And let's be honest, none of us are experts in the field of future military matters :P
Granted, but they also believed that people could shapeshift, communicate with the dead and transform lead into gold easily, and achieve eternal life, so by the same logic a lot of what we believe might be possible might flat out be impossible or very hard.
True, but people are working on designing machines that demonstrate the idea is feasible. Unlike the stuff you mentioned which was all found to not be possible, there is a hint of possibility here.

There's a movie of a guy burning his Dark Elf army. As in, with lighter fluid and a lighter. Lil' crazy in my books, but I couldn't stop once it started. Just roll down a little bit and you'll see the movie link.
-
Nice. That'll show them. Still, money where your mouth (or rather lighter) is.
-
Yeah, I watched that. Skipped over his ranting because I didn't care for the reasoning. Regardless of what they say, it makes no sense to me to burn stuff that you had bought and spent hours painting. Really strikes me as cutting off your nose to spite your face.
I mean, if you don't want it, at least put the amphetamine parrot up on ebay and make some money off it!
-
I was impressed by the dedication to his point of view. I mean, I'm pretty miffed at 40k right now, even considered [for like, an hour] selling my IG stuff. But burning it? That's mental. I honestly skipped through most of it. I mean, I've seen a fire before. There was just a certain... madness about it that I found compelling, and thought I'd share.
A deeply Imperial way of dealing with a problem. If you substituted promethium and heretics. :)

Architects crowdfund to build £1.85 billion replica of Minas Tirith in England (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/film/lord-of-the-rings/minas-tirit-crowdfund/)
A group of architects want 2 billion pounds to build a life sized copy of Minas Tirith. They've raised some money but nothing to that magnitude, of course.
'Orcs' launch campaign to destroy Minas Tirith as architects' (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/film/lord-of-the-rings/orcs-launch-crowdfunding-campaign-to-destroy-minas-tirith/)
Now, the Orcs have started to crowd fund to destroy the above life sized copy of Minas Tirith.

I got excited while looking through a thread in another 40k forum to see someone there link to an old thread here where someone was building a bit of terrain out of sprues. Really cool project, but sadly no finished results. I used to spend a lot of time here, almost none on other 40k sites. Since things are so slow here now, I've resorted to other sites, but miss this one and the activity there used to be. So it was cool to see 40konline being mentioned outside of 40konline.
Here's the thread that was mentioned: sprue bricks building (http://www.40konline.com/index.php?topic=163767.0)

Nice find, Gwaihir. :)
I came across a cool conversion of the Storm Talon, myself. It's converted to a walker, and honestly kinda looks better as one, due to its excessively bulky frame. Actually, come to think of it, it reminds me of the Goliath from Starcraft 1.

I just tried this and I really like it. It's a great find, thanks :).
-
So I went to Songfacts. I put in "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan. I'm a non-religious person, but have always found the song to be beautiful and assumed it had [positive] religious connotations.
Turns out, it's about a member of the Smashing Pumpkins OD'ing on Heroin. The "Angel" is the Heroin, making the addict feel better. Furthermore, Mrs McLachlan is a bit of a militant de-theist / negative agnostic. Which is fine, but just shows the assumptions I'd made about the song and it's writer that I was surprised.
It's probably the most "beautiful" song I've ever heard, happened to hear it on the way home today and so I looked it up. I guess that's the crazy part about songs. It's beautiful. It's incredibly dark. It's an addict's hell and a human's hope. I felt cheated, at first when I learned what it's about, but a half-hour later I'm feeling better about knowing the "truth" behind the song. I can now enjoy it on different levels.
I was initially uncomfortable with something I'd considered "sacred" in my own way being a kind of tongue-in-cheek counter point to the religious imagery. Kind of like finding out a love song is actually a song about a stalker [Every Breath You Take - The Police] and finding out it's super popular at weddings.
But then I remembered it's totally something I would do, in her space, though without the anger at religion in general. So maybe not that particular celestial being, but... anyhow. Rambling.
I blame it on the concussion of being kicked in the head by that discovery. So... Thanks? to you, Master Squeaker, for my current disturbed state of mind.

Curiosity made the cat question his limited fandom of Sarah McLachlan. And again, I'm somewhat admiring the cold, vicious... detachment? from events. Such utterly incorrect assumptions I'd made of the person behind the music.
Hmmm... I'm going to have to see if we still have those CD's. I kind of want to listen to them now. Listen for the darker undertones.

This (https://www.facebook.com/WarhammerFairwayRoad/posts/1552640685036758) is an event that is going on right now at my LGW. The manager there is absolutely stellar at building a community around the store, and this really shows it.
People were coming out of the woodwork to help plan this, and I had to get on board because why the hell not. He is getting the Blood Bowl team from me, but because I am not able to make it down to the store today he gets to play against the manager and will get a letter from me after they play the game that tells him the team is his.

You MONSTER.
This is the letter I wrote for the kid to be handed to him after the game:
Cole,
By now you’re aware that Ryan told the store community that today was your birthday. Well... the party anyways. I had planned to come down and be the person to run you through a game of Blood Bowl and get you addicted to yet another fantastic GW game, but circumstances prevented me from making it.
He also told me you were in air cadets, and I believe I was in the store when you came in during Tag Days (tsk tsk tsk lol). As someone that has been through the cadet organization when I was younger, and who has come back as an instructor, I think it is great that you are participating in such a great program. My understanding is that you were a LAC this year, which means it won’t be long before you reach Sergeant. Whatever you do, stick with cadets and see it through to the end. The skills you learn there will stay with you your entire life.
Anyways, I wanted to say happy birthday, and I hope you enjoyed the game of Blood Bowl against Ryan. I know starting a new game like that while also feeding your Warhammer addiction is tough, so if you really enjoyed the game and want to keep playing it you can. The human team that you played used to be mine and I lent it to the store for Ryan to have on hand for people to use. Keep it! The team is yours! Repaint it however you like and I hope to see you out playing with them again soon.
Think of it as a blessing from the Dark Gods, Nuffle (the fickle Blood Bowl god), the Emperor, or Sigmar. Which ever you prefer, lol.
Happy Birthday, again, and I hope you had fun today.

@Irisado- Yeah that cosplay is wicked cool. I saw the Cosplay photoshoot on FB as well it was really cool. I really like the DoW Eldar aesthetic. It reminds of the Eldar Rogue Trader art where there is almost a "Space Jokey" aesthetic from Alien to it. Really wish they'd put a little more of the creepy back into the Eldar designs from time to time. I wouldn't go completley in that direction but a nice nod to that every once and awhile would be cool.

Thought you guys might be interested to see what I am playing at my local GW. These series of quotes were taking from the Facebook group associated with the store, but we are just in the process of planning it right now. I have even brought up the idea with the manager about possibly looking into getting some GW support, maybe even some White Dwarf coverage.
Anyways, to the epic madness!
I'm curious how many legions are represented at the store. Whether they are loyalist or traitor, 30k or 40k. I'd actually like to compile a list and if we have a broad enough representation, maybe we can organize an epic traitor v loyalist throw down.
(just looking for the original legions, not successor chapters)
Loyalists
---------------
- Dark Angels
- Space Wolves
- Blood angels
- Ultramarines
- Iron Hands
- Imperial Fists
- White Scars
- Salamanders
- Raven Guard
Traitors
-------------
- Death Guard
- Iron Warriors
- Night Lord
- World Eaters
- Sons of Horus / Black Legion
- Word Bearers
- Alpha Legion
- Thousand Sons
- Emperors Children
So... yeah... lots of heretics in this community.
As per my last post, we were able to find enough people to say that we are able to get all of the founding legions represented at the store.
The next step is to find out what the point spread is between them. So, because the other post has had quite a large and confusing comment history, I'm going to tally total points here. Leave a comment with the Legion you have and roughly how many points you can field. I will update the tallies as the answers come in
Loyalists -> 73,190
---------------
- Dark Angels -> 28,400pts - 5
- Space Wolves -> 11,350pts - 5
- Blood angels -> 11,000pts - 2
- Ultramarines -> 4400pts - 2
- Iron Hands -> 3540pts -2
- Imperial Fists -> 4000pts - 2
- White Scars -> 2000pts - 1
- Salamanders -> 3500pts - 1
- Raven Guard -> 5000pts - 1
- 21 players
Traitors - 29,150
-------------
- Death Guard -> 6500pts - 4
- Iron Warriors -> XXXXXXX has Infinite!
- Night Lord -> 3800pts - 2
- World Eaters -> 3850pts - 3
- Sons of Horus -> 2000pts - 1
- Word Bearers -> 4000pts+ - 2
- Alpha Legion -> 2500pts - 1
- Thousand Sons -> 1000pts - 1
- Emperors Children -> 5500pts - 2
- 16 players
So it is safe to say that we can definitely pull off this mega battle. That has been clearly demonstrated. The next step we need to take in planning this day / weekend of pure awesomeness is to work out who will be playing what legions.
We can work out how many points per side later, but for now I just need people to sign up for which legion they wish to play. Please remember that you are selecting only one legion and every legion must be represented by at least one person.
Players that only have a single Legion will have priority for playing that Legion. If this applies to you, please indicate so that I am able to keep track of that.
-

The store manager just posted his own guidelines for the game:
Also we are going to do a 16x4 I think. I might set up a camera to constantly film and then edit later for the highlights.
But a few ground rules for this many people and filming.
ABSOLUTELY NO SWEARING.
You'll screw the video up. And make me angry.
No being anti social to customers walking around watching. Talk to them. Explain. Show off.
No proxies. Do this right. Counts as is fine.
No non GW.
I want shouting. I want the heavens to rain fire. I want you guys to lose and be happy to lose because you're taking part in something extremely cinematic.
Guys, we were just the number 1 store in North America for new stores for December. Christmas season. Let's close out the 2016 fiscal year (which ends in may) with the biggest battle a GW has seen in a long long time.
I posted a poll in the store's Facebook group to get some feedback, and it looks like everyone is on board with 1500pts per person. I tallied up the number of people per side, and it looks like the game will be around 19,500pts per side at least. I may just round it up to 20,000 to have a nice round number.
-
Really not sure how you'll be able to play a proper game without swearing. Seems unnatural.
-
I was thinking after the match is it back to being anti-social to the customers again.

I know I'm not the only one who is going to struggle with that one.
I was thinking after the match is it back to being anti-social to the customers again.
Actually, the community at this place is very open and welcoming with customers. It's not like the old GW stores which were literally holes in the wall tossed into the darkest corner of the mall.

Sounds awesome, GML. Hope everyone actually carries through with their promise, would hate to see someone drop out in the last moment.

I was thinking after the match is it back to being anti-social to the customers again.
Actually, the community at this place is very open and welcoming with customers. It's not like the old GW stores which were literally holes in the wall tossed into the darkest corner of the mall.
I didn't really think otherwise GML it just struck me as funny that the store owner saw it necesary to post a guideline to ensure that you were all nice to the customers.
No being anti social to customers walking around watching. Talk to them. Explain. Show of

I didn't notice that part of his post lol.

D & Diesel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLEMb_RIZ3o)
I also learned, that Diesels Character in "The last Witchhunter" is based upon a 800 years old Witchhunter called Kaulder, Diesel used to play in D&D as a teenager, which is really cool :D
Now where to find a film studio to produce the story of a dwarfen monk with a tragic backstory, who thwarted evil countless times while getting roaring drunk (i never said he was a good monk)?!

Every year we get our geek on and go down to LA for Gallifrey One, the Doctor Who convention. While ribbons are the done thing we always like to take some badges down as well to give away. A local friend does the art from our suggestions. This was one of this years: Special Weapons Pool.

That feeling when you share a picture of your latest paint job with the official Warhammer 40,000 Facebook group and they respond!
Now, I am sure they respond in a similar manner to most of the images they receive, but damned if it doesn't put a smile on your face!

I love the concept and most of the execution. But the part that bothers me is that he has black sticks extending out to where the supports are for the models. I think it would have looked better if he had made those clear or something.
I know... begging and choosing, right?
-
G'day GML!
Can see why he/she would prefer the strength of rods over clear plastic, however, painting them a warp kind of blue would have given them that exhaust trail feel. They haven't gotten round to painting the actual models, so maybe painting the rods are on the cards as well... Be well!

I like the work that he put into the army, but There's no way I could sit through a 30 minute power point presentation of him talking about how much he liked how things turned out lol.
Kudos on the effort the video took though lol.
I do have to admit that I cringed pretty hard at his pronunciation of "Guilles Le Breton."

I skipped quite a bit. The models looked neat, and I miss the Bretonnians, so eh.
I don't speak much French myself, but I can imagine it being annoying when people mispronounce something you know.
