Welcome to the Summertime Blues Painting Challenge. The goal of this challenge is to get some of that unpainted lead that most of us have laying around table-ready. At the start of each month, participants pledge to have a squad painted by the closing date. This one will run for June, July, August. (Note that this is three one-month challenges, not one three-month challenge.)

A squad, for the purpose of definition, would be anything that counted as a unit choice (e.g. HQ, Elite, Troop, etc.). This includes retinue for the independant char (e.g. familiars, bodyguards, etc.). I'd personally like to see multi-model squads -- the purpose of the challenge is to get a bunch of lead painted in a 3-month period -- but maybe you're planning on doing a kickass conversion/paint job for an army leader, nothing wrong with that.

RULES
1. Vows will be frozen 10 days after the start of the challenge. There is no changing of *any* vow after day 10. Say what you'll paint, then paint what you say. If you don't already own the models you want to paint, I suggest not making the vow until you do.

2. This is more of a request than a rule. *Please* post work in progress pics if you possibly can. One of the best things about the thread is watching stuff come together.

3. The model doesn't have to be texture based -- but the base must be painted.

Painting Challenge FAQ

Q: Do I have to do Games Workshop figs?
A: No. Several people make Warmachine vows. Since Warmachine doesn't use squads in the same way that 40K does, I suggest that it be at least a 3-man squad (Menoth Choir, etc.), or a warcaster + at least one warjack.

Q: I need to change my vow!
A: You have until Day 10 of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There are no prizes, so you only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?
A: That's the goal. Assuming the board manages to stay up :)

Q: Hey, what if we finish our vow but decide to paint more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's kind of cheesy to make a vow with a 75% painted unit at the start of the month...

Q: I want to paint a squad of Howling Banshees and a single Ranger. Is the Ranger legal?
A: Yes. The "must count as a troop choice" rule establishes the minimum. Anything above that doesn't have to conform, it's just bonus.

Q: When is the closing date?
A: The month runs with the calendar month. Vows freeze on the 12th.

Once more I'll be taking over for Loydb for this month, in fact I guess since it's now 2/1 in my favour, it was more like Loydb was taking over for me.

And I have now implemented a new system, vows in parenthesis [thats brackets to you plebs], are essentially maybes and therefore won't count towards a fail if you don't do them but still finish the non-maybes, however if you only finish a maybe you fail (so people don't make entire vows of maybes in order not to fail).

I'm vowing 15 skeleton warriors, on round bases, don't ask, will explain later.

Trying for 30, but 15 is just the vow. Running low on cash.

A vacation with hardly any plans seems to be a perfect excuse to try this once. Although I have to learn for a 2nd try fo my test, I's sure I have time to spare ;D

Count me in for 8 warp spiders (2 from a squad of 10 are all but done, some dark pictures here (http://www.40konline.com/index.php?topic=112251.msg1314461#msg1314461)).
Aw heck, 12 (new!) rangers as well.

(what on earth am I thinking!?!...ah well...)

Count me in this month for 10 Harlequin Troupes which is my second troupe unit. As my first troupe squad and my Mimes are now finished and re based ( pics to follow ) .

Also throw in a converted Harlequin Spiritwalker ( Wraithlord )

The pressure should mean I get them done in time for a campaign thats up and coming at my local club.

One mostly-finished Ranger, who I used to work out the color scheme for the squad:

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fpages.sbcglobal.net%2Fjdr%2Fimages%2Feldar%2Franger_draft.jpg&hash=c9d79d4f94ff4cac9caaa08d0c3cc1497b4c7327)

I was going to put a snow-camo pattern on their cloaks, but once I got the grey base coat on, I decided I liked the ghost-like look it gave the squad (not very apparent from the angle of this pic, I'm afraid), and decided to keep the flat color on the robes.

The other 4 models have been given a single coat to define the major color areas. I also have 5 backpacks which are only basecoated.

I've got to say that the new ranger models are outstanding. They have a ton of detail, much more than is apparent in any of the official photographs I've seen.

5 dark reapers.

Quick WIP here. Colour scheme is black, boltgun, red gore and bone. Most colours laid down so far, inking next. Needs a lot of tidying up, but I'll do that when I've got more done.

I've based the warp spider now, except for the exarch, and I've based one ranger as well, just to see how it looks painted.

I've also found some stuff I'd like your professional opinions about, but I don't know whether this place is the right place for it. I'll ask it anyways, I could always remove it later
- I'm still looking for a spider which I could use as an example for my warp spider exarch. I already have a spider for the aspects (see previous post), but I'm still looking for something to make the exarch stand out a bit, but still make him fit in.
the only thing I could find for now is this (http://www.smugmug.com/keyword/all/spider/46/47235419) (a bit too extravagant, pretty none the less), another one (http://www.smugmug.com/keyword/all/spider/50/44955278), this (http://www.smugmug.com/keyword/all/spider/50/44954895) (pattern only), and something quite different (http://www.smugmug.com/keyword/all/spider/76/33768674) (yes I saw every 2020 of them...*sigh*).
- My rangers will be wearing blue cloaks, as the basing will be blue as well. I'm still wondering whether I should also add a 'horizon' to the the cloak, like part of it reflects the sky (which will be slightly greenish). Has anyone ever tried this before?

@ magus_42: I couldn't agree more. Somehow the models just seem... 'tighter' or 'slicker', for a lack of better words. I even, for a small moment, considered to paint the GW logo on the tag, as even that looks really nice :D.

I'm afraid I have to withdraw like this, but I'm lowering my vow to 8 warp spiders and 4 rangers. My studying isn't going as quick as I hoped, and I'm still working as on how to paint the exarch and the rangers, so that'll take more time as well. Still, not getting your vow's completed would be worse still...

Well, since i've just got back into the hobby and have decided to revisit my Tau force, I might as well chuck in what i'm supposed to be doing this month.

36x Tau Fire Warriors
8x Tau Pathfinders
and maybe: Finish the 6 Fanatics that are sat in front of my screen atm

Yes it is a fairly large number of mini's to paint but considering that all are already assembled and primed, coupled with the fact I've settled on a colour scheme which is fairly simple it should happen.

UPDATE:

ok 4 of the 6 waywatchers are fully done.. unfortunatly they required varnish to stop them chipping.  unfortunatly despite using matt varnish they still look glossy, is there any way to stop this or are there better matt varnishes than GW got fed up of painting these guys theyre too detailed and i seem to be getting nowhere on the last 2 lol.. moving onto next models

started work on the 10 glade guard, going production line style but maintaining a high quality, all legs are near completion

not long to go before im finished i hope

There's more visible progress on the Banshees, but that's because the Scorps were coloured in the previous pic and I've been doing details. I've spent about equal time per model on both. Currently on target.

I seem to have lost my muse. Got my LRC 80% finished, played a game with it, then.....can't muster the enthusiasm to do the tracks. Could be worse. Glad I'm not armoured company.

Anyway, I'll get it done. I've got a bagload of DE arriving soon.

I feel so guilty not having my vow done within the first 2 weeks on the month. I am use to getting done fast! Damn Flu keeping me in bed and with a massive headache for almost 2 weeks!

But I am getting there

all wraithbone done on

3 Falcons
2 Wave Serpents
3 Vypers
5 Jetbikes
7 Weaponplatforms

all the weapons have been magnetized on the Falcons.(like 9 weapons to swap out for 3 Falcons)

1 Falcon and both Wave Serpents are 100% done. Takes me about 90 mins to do the gems on one Eldar Tank, so ugh so much more to do but I will finish!

Thinking next month I will throw on my Phantom Titan to update to my new standard for wraithbone and gems.

Well I had a huge weekend of painting and powered through the reapers.

I'm quite happy with the Exarch, it's not the most involving model I've done but I like the look of it and how it turned out.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi12.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fa233%2FXodiac2005%2FModels%2FDarkReapers003.jpg&hash=3fdb3f2dde2d9233ef47740ad2af6864d10cac9e)

The two other reapers in the background were my colour scheme models.

Scorpions: Just need to finish off the runes on the swords, final details on the pistols, and basing.

Banshees: Colours need finalising, but mostly done - maybe 20% left to do, just little bits here and there.

Should be finished on time, will post pics when they are done.

Sweet looking models everyone.

Here's my update:  I have everything painted, and am just finishing the bases now.  I will try to take some picture soon and post them.  I went with a light brown armour and dark red skin on my tyranids, with some bright green highlights here and there.  There are looking good.

Can you add my vow to the list?  I did get it in for August 4th and all...  Did I forget to do something?

whew I cut it close this month!  but I finished my vow with this last 4 hour session. ATM though I cannot show proof with pics as I loaned my camera to a friend and will have to post them later. It took me about 4 hours per tank to update each of my tanks. 45 mins per weapon platform, an hour per bike and and 2 hours for the Wraithlord. I added a few things to my list as the month passed by but here is what I finished. I redid all the undersides and weapons to my new Bone color standard. Did a minor new color add to the topsides for my Alaitoc paint scheme, and the part that took the longest was all the gems on each piece.

Touched up my Scorpion II 30% repaint

Touched up all the rest of this list. each about a 70% repaint

2 Wave Serpents
3 Falcons
1 Prisim
1 Wraithlord
6 Weapon PLatforms
and 7 Jetbikes (2 s.cannons and a Warlock on a jetbike)

my back is killing me from being hunched over so much lately!

Well with one day to go I'm announcing that I'm not going to run it next month, so if any of you want to pick it up that would be great. I've also finished my vow, my cannoness is looking pretty good, I've begun to use inks for my models and the green power sword is looking good.

I'm done. Such as it is. I really don't like painting tanks much, so I haven't added much in the way of highlights etc. but I'm happy that it's done well to battlefield standard. Pics later. That's me done for deathwing for now. I'll start painting dark eldar next month (and probably through to well after christmas).

Khemri - I'll run next month's thread if you like (and if there is sufficient interest still). I can probably work out how to set it up, but pm me with anything you think I should know.

edit: unless our illustrious new mod would like to run the painting challenge? congrats again NR.

Title: Tyranids are done
Post by: Scalu on August 30, 2006, 07:16:33 PM
My Nids are done.  I had to make a slight change to my vow since the tournament rules changed as I was painting them, but basically I just didn't base 2 genestealers and 1 tyrant guard out of the bunch.  They are painted though.

I've painted and based: 10 Genestealers, 6 Warriors, 2 Raveners, 1 Tyrant Guard, 2 Biovores with 8 Acid mines, 1 Hive Tyrant, and 1 Carnifex.

Also painted but not based: 2 Genestealers, and 1 Tyrant Guards.

And already painted but had to base: 16 Genestealers, 16 Hormaguants, 8 Termagants, and 1 Carnifex.

Not bad for a month's work.  :D

btw, I placed 13th out of 20 at the tournament, by winning 3 and losing 3 games.  My best tournament ever!

Sorry guys, but I won't be able to complete my vow... I seem to be the only one who won't be able to impress all the rest with a great dispay :'(.
On the other hand, I did get to run a small 3-day campaign with some friends instead. With spare time being scarce, I figured my time with my friends would be more valuable. As for my models, my remaining 1 spider, 1 exarch and 4 rangers will be done soon...
