(Newbie) 1500 point Tau army?
« on: March 7, 2004, 11:39:07 PM »
Hi guys! Recently I bought a Tau army from a friend and well... I am completely lost (especially with the crisis that I have glued together... DOH!).  I am not really all that new to Warhammer 40k (been playing Tyranids for 2 years now) but the Tau are a big leap in a new direction for me.  I would really appreciate any helpful hints you could give to my army list...

HQ:
Commander Shas'o (135)
Plasma Rifle, Sheild Generator, Missile Pod, Sheild Generator, Hard-Wired Multi-Tracker

Elite:
Crisis Battlesuit Shas'ui (193) (Bonded)- 3
1 Missile Pod, Plasma Rifle, Multi-Tracker
2 Burst cannon, Missile Pod, Target Lockers

Crisis Battlesuit (215) (1 Shas'vre)(2 Shas'ui)-3 (Bonded)
(Shas'vre)-Fusion Blaster, Missile Pod, Plasma Rifle, Hard Wired Multi-Tracker
(Shas'ui) 1- Burst Cannon, Fusion Blaster, Target Lockers
(Shas'ui) 1- Burst Cannon, Plasma Rifle, Target Lockers

Troops
Fire Warrior Squad (230) (bonded)- 12 (Mounted in Devilfish with decoy launcher and multi-tracker)
Fire Warrior Squad (130) (bonded)- 12
Fire Warrior Squad (130) (bonded)- 12
Fire Warrior Squad (130) (bonded)- 12

Heavy Support:
Hammerhead Gunship (165)- Decoy Launchers, Multi-Trackers
Hammerhead Gunship (165)- Decoy Launchers, Multi-Trackers

WHEW! Thats the list guys... ANY suggestions are appreciated... oh and I tend to face off against Eldar (Ulthwe), Chaos Space Marines (Thousand Sons), Space Marines (Space Wolves) and finally Imperial Guard.  Thanks again!

I would give the battlesuits multi-trackers instead of target locks and split up your two squads of three into three squads of two (more mobility, and you don't have to pay for bonded). An eathereal would be nice, but that might just be me. Why does your Shas'o have two shield generators? probably just a mis-type but...

I think that 2 Hammerheads and a DFish may be too much tank.  I could be wrong but it's just my preference.  You may want to consider dropping the Devilfish for some more Firewarriors.

Likewise you can split 4 Squads of 12 into 6 Squads of 8.  I know this may sound like a dumb idea but more often than not, I use 3 Separate HVY choices (broadsides) and 6 squads of FW.  This way, by the time  I place my Specialty troops, the crisis suits, stealth teams, pathfinders, etc..., your oppenent has placed almost his whole army.

This will give you 2 advantages.  First of all you will be better suited to deploy your specialty units.  Second it can give you a mental edge.  A lot of players will become intimidated if they've placed theyre whole army and you still have 7 units to go... especially if youre Tau.

units of 9 are much better than a unit of 8 as two casualties is 25% but with 9 models you round up and you can lose three.

May be you should take  the o'shovah way and doing things just drop one of the hammer heads and the devilfishes multiracker (why you have it is above me)

i always give my devilfishes multitrackers cause they can then move 12" disembark and still give some covering fire.
