I have noticed people new players asking for the same advice. "How do I make my army win?" As a student of history I have read Sun Tzu, Machiavelli, Talleyrand, and about other leaders in history, and tried to figure out how to apply their knowledge to Warhammer 40K. The following lesson, if applied properly, will help you to win 90% of the time (luck being the other 10%)

Concentrate your forces. Judgment, conserve your forces and energies by keeping them concentrated at their weakest point. You gain more by finding a rich vain and mining it deeper, then by flitting from 1 shallow mine to another-intensity defeats extensity every time.

Example: A newbie asked for my help. But when I told him how to win verses an overwhelming force, he was very unsure. At first he didn't want to listen (why did he ask for my help in the first place?), but I took him aside and gave him this analogy. When playing a video game and you are up against a monster with multiple attack points, don't you concentrate on one part of the monster and move to other parts? When he realized this, we had already won.

The players were Black Templar and Eldar vs. Eldar (I the Eldar adviser) and a scout marine company. His army was very basic: Dark Reapers, Rangers, and 2 squads of guardians with weapons platforms, banshees, squad of scorpions in wave serpent, Khaine, and a Wraithlord. First turn went to the opponents. And they took out 3 banshees, and 1 guardian. Then when it was his turn, he worked on blasting a marine tactical squad with dark reapers, then he finished off the tactical squad with the girls. Once that threat was gone, he concentrated on a rhino filled with a scout squad. After the wraith lord blew the thing apart with a bright lance, he used the rangers to pick off the rest of the squad. Then with his wave serpent and its twin linked bright lance he used it to destroy another rhino with a decked out chaplain. The guardians took him out with 2 star cannons. Meanwhile the scorpions jumped out and assaulted a whirlwind with haywire grenades (it was a small table, and he moved it thinking it would be safe behind a rock and the rhino which was on fire). He kept wanting to split up his attacks, and try to destroy the other Eldar Avatar, storm guardians, and Wraithlord. But by focusing on the Black Templar and using sweeping firepower, he wiped out 1 squad at a time. The other Eldar player (next turn) ran like a dog for cover. He got his troops out of dodge. The enemy couldn't figure out what or who to attack. So by the 2nd turn, it was pretty much game over and they were picked off. The scout marine player didn't do so well, but by turn 3 they won and took the objective.

When playing remember the arrow: You can not hit 2 targets with 1 arrow. If your thoughts stray, you miss the enemy's heart. Mind and arrow must become 1. Only with such concentration of mental and physical power can your arrow hit the target and pierce the heart.

One lasting element of the battle is to focus on your objective. If your mission is to take and hold an objective concentrate on it. Never forget what the mission is about, and do not let distractions mess up your judgment.

A good example of this was during a “seize the objective” scenario. I was playing my beloved Eldar and was paired up with a vanilla marine player. We were up against two Chaos players. Our mission was to capture the plant on a rock. Once and only once my ally had to remind me to concentrate on the objective and not the chaos champion hacking my squads to bits. So instead of taking my wraith guard and killing the champion, I used them to capture the prize.

Keep your eye on the goal, not the distractions.
