[NM] 1700pt Ultramarine List Review please!
« on: February 12, 2005, 12:51:33 AM »
I am trying to get an all around good Marine army that can stand up for its self, i dont want traits or anything just that great roman feel that the Ultras have (i might even get some of those champion heads for my command squad). So what do you think of this list?

This is my ultramarines that i am hoping to do, i think they are pretty well all around. Tell me what you think all help welcome :).

Hq:Master(commander)-130pts
.Iron Halo, Lightning Claws
Reclusiarch(chaplain)-95pts
.Plasma Pistol
Command Squad(8 men)-225pts
.Furious Cahrge, Meltagun, Plasma Gun, Vet w/Combi Plasma Drop pod
(Both Leaders go with command Squad)

Elites:
Dreadnought-150pts
.Basic weapons, Tank hunter, Drop pod

Troops:
10 scouts-185pts
.9 sniper rifles,1 missle launcher

5 Marines-180pts
.Lascannon, Razor back w/twinlinked lascannons

10 Marines-200pts
.1 melta guns, drop pod

10 Marines-232pts
.1 flamers, vet w/ combi-flamer, deathwind drop pod

Fast Attack:
2 Land Speeder's (not a squad)-145pts
.1 Heavy bolter, 1 Multi melta, 2 assualt cannons

Heavy:
Vindicator-158pts
.Smoke Launchers, Power of the Machine Spirit

Total:1700pts

so what do you think?

Sorry, but a bit weird. A squad in a dp will most likely not get the bonus of furious charge. The Vet Sergeant should have a power fist if a tougher creature shows up. Don't mix assault weapons! The squad should have frags.

Dreadnought-150pts
.Basic weapons, Tank hunter, Drop pod
good

Quote
10 scouts-185pts
.9 sniper rifles,1 missle launcher
This squad is too large for my liking.

5 Marines-180pts
.Lascannon, Razor back w/twinlinked lascannons
One vehicle is asked for getting smoked. I suggest to drop this unit.

Quote
10 Marines-200pts
.1 melta guns, drop pod

10 Marines-232pts
.1 flamers, vet w/ combi-flamer, deathwind drop pod
Each squad should be led by a Vet Sergeant w/ power fist. Plasma gun is the best weapon choice for a dp squad. Give the squad true grit if possible.

Quote
2 Land Speeder's (not a squad)-145pts
.1 Heavy bolter, 1 Multi melta, 2 assualt cannons
good

Quote
Vindicator-158pts
.Smoke Launchers, Power of the Machine Spirit
Drop smoke.

so its a drop pod army! very interesting! everything's quite well rounded. except for the command squad. its alittle over kill to have both characters in one squad.

you're concentrating all the close combat capability of your army into one squad, which if they get destroyed it becomes a disaster.
better to put the each of the two characters into the 2 ten man tactical squads, mayb ditch the command squad and go for another squad of 5 marines with razorback.  and use the remainding points to give the 2 tactical squads vetern seargents with powerfists and terminator honors to even further bolster the squad's cc capabilities.

im still not sure how the vindicator will fit into the whole battle plan though, it will be slow moving, short ranged, and when most of the force drop pods onto the enemy all over the table the vindicator might not serve it's purpose that well. I would consider going for another dreadnought on drop pod instead. they are great support for the tactical squads. If the tactical squads run into something they have problem kililng, ie. a carnifex or something simlar the dreadnought can step in and solve the situation.

this is a very solid army, take these suggestions and try variations of this list, u might not agree with me so feel free to check on other's suggestions too.

snot

p.s. do you actually have all the models?

Hows this Variation of the list?:

Hq:Master(commander)-130pts
.Iron Halo, Lightning Claws
Reclusiarch(chaplain)-95pts
.Plasma Pistol
Command Squad(8 men)-225pts
.Furious Cahrge, Meltagun, Plasma Gun, Vet w/Combi Plasma, Drop pod
(Both Leaders go with command Squad)

Elites:
Dreadnought-150pts
.Basic weapons, Tank hunter, Drop pod

Dreadnought-150pts
.Basic weapons, Tank hunter, Drop pod

Dreadnought-150pts
.Basic Weapons,Tank hunter Drop pod
Troops:

10 scouts-185pts
.9 sniper rifles,1 missle launcher

10 Marines-200pts
.1 melta guns, drop pod

10 Marines-232pts
.1 flamers, vet w/ combi-flamer, deathwind drop pod

Fast Attack:
2 Land Speeder's (not a squad)-145pts
.1 Heavy bolter, 1 Multi melta, 2 assualt cannons

Total:1700pts

So what do you think about the 3 dreads in drop pods, this way i drop the 3 squads all with dread close by, this way the 2 10 men squad gets 18 bolter shots and the command squad gets 16 bolter shots plus 4 assualt cannon shots, if something is 2 close to the command squad i pull them down with snipers as i send a speeder up each flank dishing out assualt cannons. I personally think it might work out ok, im going to play test it but it think it could stand up pretty good. I also dont see what people dislike about the command squad, they are pretty damn awsome i think especially with the power weapon and lightning claws using litanies of hate its pretty damn effective.

Nid players wont be a problem, can you say tyranid vetrans, oh yes the krak grendaes are that strong on a preffer enemy.

What I'm missing in the list are Vet Sergeants w/ power fists in the tactical squads and in the Command squad.

I really dont see the point of vetran sergeants with power fists, i meen power fists strike last and then they are just going to allocate attacks on to him riping his head off.

trust me, they have thier uses.. 2 dreadnoughts are enuf.. 3 might be going over board.. :P

trust me, vet seargents with fists have their uses.. how about this: make the vet. sgt. models first, but dont necesarily use them in game.. then try another game WITH the vet. sgts. you will see some difference in the of outcome of close combats.

In all my armies (EC, BT and 13th Co), I give the squad leaders power fists or thunder hammers and nothing else. Trust us. A power fist is Dreadnought insurance and does more damage to a tactical squad than a power weapon.
