The Magos Biologis have spent countless years trying to tag and catalog each and every Splinter and Hive fleet the Imperium has come across, but it is a laboursome and daunting task and I fear it is foolish to attempt, Omnissiah forgive me. The High Magos has sent out countless exploratory fleets to trail the wondering Tyranid fleets to observe and document their behaviour, but the communications with the exploratory fleets are few and far between, leaving myself to speculate at least half have been destroyed. I have been sent out with the most recent exploratory fleet, and we are currently trailing behind a Beta class splinter fleet that has just finished stripping a world - May the Omnissiah forgive their weak flesh - and have begun moving onwards. I have been ...-GF3&kf-... that there seems to be a hive ship lagging behind the rest of the fleet, apparently damaged beyond use. I have informed the captain that we will be boarding this ...-th78@!€h2-... once it has finally given into its imperfect substance. My cogitator calculates that that will accrue within ...-hsfku-... next three hours. I believe I shall gleam much knowledge from studying this ...-%wgd€-... we shall ...-#hk3jb4-... Find a way to des ...-#*YTg20-... In the name of the Omni-hf4#Fe2IN*-

Hello fellow Tyranid Forum viewers. I've thought it was high time the Tyranid board got its own Army Picture thread. So here it is everyone. Post your Tyranid pictures in here. It doesn't even have to be the your full army. Got a nice squad you want to show off? By all means post em here. Got a really epic scenic model? Post away. You can even use this thread as a visionary timeline of your Tyranid Armies progression from a lowly Splinter Fleet, to a massive and galaxy threatening Hive Fleet. If we get enough responses, the Mods'll even Sticky this for all the forum to see! I'll start us off I suppose.

Broodlord and his Retinue! All their arms were snapped off when I first put them into my army box Lol. I only have one Genestealer with all his arms attached.

Was experimenting with a new colour scheme. I believe the Norm Queen prefers the other one.

My only Zoanthrope. I think he's a little less connected with the hivemind because he hovers slightly to the right... He rides in the back of the Hive Ship.

My Magnetized Carnifex. I've just begun painting the CC upgrades

My first Warrior Squad. They've served me well.

Close up of the only finished one. I like how it turned out, but I feel the head is too birdlike.

My Hive Tyrant, its saved my bacon once or twice.

My little critters, they'll keep on growing.
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi148.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fs38%2FCobraCommander18%2FTyranidarmypics023-1.jpg&hash=dc3cb4e2e1e475b8aa9701c3a3f58448b213ab48)
My wall of gaunts. So far they've managed a whole 3 turns of shooting since I've had them. Oops, someone wasn't properly pixelated in the genevats it seems.

And there's my army so far. In the works are:

1 Hive Tyrant
8 Genestealers
16 Gaunts
8 Hormogaunts
3 Warriors
1 Zoanthrope

So the Norm Queen's got a lot of work to do. So Again, you don't have to post a whole army, even a few Nids'll work. Conversion and WIP pics welcome.

I love the color scheme!  Course, it's almost exactly what I use (my blue is a bit darker and red is a bit lighter, plus guns are green), but that doesn't change the fact.  Yours are better painted, too.

Also, don't worry about the zoanthrope.  That's the worst built model EVER, which includes it being top-heavy and leaning.  Just don't actually move it or anything, and it shouldn't fall over. :D

If fix it being top heavy, ues lead shot or sinkers gluded under the base. With a layer or acrilic gloss and a dab or paint mixed together. Helps to weight it down and keep it from being knocked over.

I'm glad you like them, but please, post pictures of your own armies if you can. No sense having everyone drool over mine when this thread is meant for the whole community. ;)

I don't think I helped the Zoanthropes case when I clipped that bulb off the bottom of the bottom part. I realized the second time around that that's there to help with balance. He's fairly balanced as is, but for the life of me I could never get him to fit straight when I tried to glue the upper and lower torso together, the upper half would always lean to the side. :(

Anyways, take a good look, because I've been experimenting with a new colour scheme. Basically the same, but it's going to be enchanted blue skin, regal blue carapace, and warlock purple insides, with scar red claws and such. If it looks good enough, I may consider redoing my whole army... *shudders at the though* What can I say? I like blue...

Post more pics everyone! I'll be getting one or two more pictures ready for my new scheme, but in the meantime, here's something I've been working on. You can find the related conversion thread here:

Bah, fine, after almost 2 years on this site, I guess I'll finally dig out a camera and post some pics tomorrow.  But I have to warn everyone: I'm not a very good painter, and while I've gotten better recently, most of my 'nids were painted a while ago, so they're mostly painted not very well.  They're playable, but not golden-daemon level by any means.  Also, I think the Zoanthropes and Broodlord have some paint chipping.

Sorry but how do you copy in images?

I personally just use a photo website like photobucket. I then upload my pictures onto the website, and it gives you a URL link that you can just copy and paste into your post, and the picture will show up. There's probably other, more easier ways to do it, but that's just the one I prefer, considering I can edit the photo like cropping and resizing it, so it doesn't take so long to load for others who have slower modems then some.

Wow, I really like the colour scheme, and your Warriors and Carnifex look sweet. I like the Warrior with the bigger set of talons. And I agree it does take so long to paint them! But it ends up being worth it in the end. ;D

Now I'm totally motivated to paint more of my stuff, I'll get on it today and post more pictures later.

Here's a little of my army so far. I wish I had more time to paint. Meh. This is a warrior I started on. I liked the red but decided not to do it on the rest of my army. So far only the warrior and a tyrant guard have red bodies.
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi252.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh11%2Falliben_ruair%2F40k%2F01warrior01.jpg&hash=8f1d6518497bef21478394efe32be840ad4dec7c)

Here's more of the other bugs:
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi252.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fhh11%2Falliben_ruair%2F40k%2F101_0497.jpg&hash=3dcf167034f958554004cd78ce33c73d141da4e5)

The dakkafex has been changed to a twin venom cannon fex. I don't like the way either setup looks on it, though. You can see him hiding behind the painted tyrant.

And lastly is my favorite pic so far:

Without further ado, Hive Fleet Hydra:

This is a really dark picture of the my zoanthropes (one who is missing the upper body due to being the worst model ever), my spore mines, and my two beloved Biovores (I only have 2 because I've been proxying a 3rd while I tried to find another old Biovore, which is currently in the mail from e-bay.)
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi67.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh317%2Fbenandorf%2FZoanbio1.jpg&hash=831fa488d452d35a68585203c322cf3f6651897e)

(My warriors are next in the line-up, but I seemed to have forgotten to get specific pics of them, so you'll see them in the over-all views at the end)

Here are my termagants, most of them very, very poorly painted.  You can tell which ones have been painted more recently because they're the ones that don't look awful, only mediocre (hint: they have red caps on their guns).
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi67.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh317%2Fbenandorf%2Ftermagants1.jpg&hash=479fdc49dbbf310d05388827b6094a0e9371bee5)

Here's a poor photo of my Tyrant Guard (which is not completely painted) and my beloved Dakkatyrant (which is probably the best painted model in my 'nids).  These are the most recent I've painted (sometime back in February...), so they're actually decent looking.
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi67.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh317%2Fbenandorf%2FDakkatyrant1.jpg&hash=cef9dde7202811a7d560b1771d58cc6122ac0d2f)

My flyrant!  Devourer of worlds, destroyer of armor saves, roller of penetrating hits!  Painted decently, though not all of it was my work (I didn't re-prime when I got him, just painted over the colors).  The photo is bad, but I'm just really bad at photography.  His paint is a little chipped due to the major reconstructive surgery he had to undergo after a tussle with the floor at one of the Lucky 13 events (he did at least kill a Shadowsword before he took a nose dive from the table).
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi67.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh317%2Fbenandorf%2FFlyrant1.jpg&hash=8037345e1d7749ddffcb8580661fd5b8d18b8236)

Hormagants, most of them not painted.  You can see one of them I converted using Genestealer scything talons up close.  Sorry again for the mediocre pictures, but nothing of interest here.

Here are my carnifexes, a Sniper and Dakka.  The Dakka's painted pretty well, and was custom built by someone at my LGS who traded it to me for the Ol' One Eye model I found in the bitz bin.  I put on the guns myself ;D
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi67.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh317%2Fbenandorf%2Fcarnifexes1.jpg&hash=c6a2990933dd7fb0457422bbf71eba2ccd0e3d03)

Here are my rippers, the green ones I bought a while back and haven't had the heart to prime over them.  I don't use them much due to the fact that rippers are kinda meh (though running in 5th helps them a lot, so they'll probably get some use now).
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi67.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh317%2Fbenandorf%2Frippers1.jpg&hash=0f361fc8916762cbc9bcc9bcfa1d2458b20c1586)

Lastly, my genestealers and Broodlord!  I didn't get them all in the picture, but I have about 50 of them, with about 20 of them painted.  Also there's the space marine I converted for no real reason and it isn't actually anything.
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi67.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh317%2Fbenandorf%2FGenestealers1.jpg&hash=bdee55f6f60d969d49258272125839eea007874f)

And here's an overview, from the left, center, and right.  My warriors are in the left one, and are poorly painted because they were painted back when I took about 15 minutes a model and didn't double or triple coat on any colors ever.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi67.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh317%2Fbenandorf%2FLeftOverview1.jpg&hash=b190faf13e284a2fcd70b2477e890a58cd7c423e)
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi67.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh317%2Fbenandorf%2FCenterOverview1.jpg&hash=53e2470c6280bd6968c62855b1d88e8ab0bf01e1)
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi67.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh317%2Fbenandorf%2FRightOverview1.jpg&hash=4d0653b778919f0d391233c8a3fda693d577991a)

Ah, yes, before someone asks, those other models behind my 'nids are my Orc and Goblin army (not all of it, just about 2/3 of the models).  I had them out working on them because I was converting some spearmen into non-spearmen, and didn't want to put them away.  The few that are painted are painted to a very high standard for me, and the Warboss on the boar is only about half-painted (with the ugly colors on the boar going away by the time he's finished)
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi67.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fh317%2Fbenandorf%2FOrcs1.jpg&hash=97152b9ae2d770a87d7cd84deb1e7f332bd313b2)

Anyways, there you have it, my mostly unpainted Tyranid army.

Post by: Akaiyou on August 2, 2008, 07:24:07 AM
For those that want to see a massive tyranid list here's some old pics i took.

I asked my best friend's ex-girlfriend to paint these for me, it's a work in progress she's starting with the CC units i'll post more pics when I have a substantial amount of them painted.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv630%2F0RaktaK0%2F40K%2FTheTyranids5.jpg&hash=12f5e7999999e1c6c88dbd51c59d321ecb83977e)

Hope you like.

Edit: I thought you'd like to see what kind of color scheme i'm aiming for.
given that tyranids are NOT friggin bugs, they are meant to be dinosaur/reptilian like, i opted to paint them green and because i have such a huge list i'd opted to color code their carapace and weapons to more easily make 'em out in the field of battle.

All CC nids are employing a Red and Green color scheme. Here are pics of my Lictor, Broodlord and Hive Tyrant.

Haha! Awesome. And from the cold depths of space comes a new alien menace... Hive Fleet Christmas! Unwrapping death in a galaxy near you!

It will be interesting to see the entire army painted up like this. Must be nice to have someone to paint for you. I never have the time to paint. Otherwise I'd have my army finished by now. Oh well. She's doing well, I was just never really a fan of the shiny paints. What kind of paints are those, anyway?

Your friend did pretty well. I like the red. That's a LOT of models for one girl to paint though. Poor kid.

yes it is indeed nice, i've been looking for someone to paint for me for ages, i simply have no artistic talent for things like that. Mmm i really don't know about the kind of paint i'll have to forward her to this forum so she can maybe answer that for you if she has time. And yeah that's a lot of stuff but i'm not putting pressure on her she's doing them at her pace so it works out I just need to buy her paint glue and brushes.

I find Photobucket to have sufficiant options in order to fix any dark or blurry pictures you might have of your minatures. Sorry for the MIA, I recently got a chaos landraider and spend my days assembling and painting that. I'm currently working on a squad of genestealers, so will probably have them done in a week or so. Keep the pictures coming!

I need to get a broader selection of pictures of my swarm... but for now, a small teaser will have to do.  Here's my custom Flyrant, boasting the best that bio-engineering has to offer in terms of travel plans....

Haven't posted much, all my time I should be posting I'm spending painting Eldar, Chaos and Nids.  Yes, I am one of those people others get to paint their models for them (thus the Chaos).  I just started my nids and decided to go with the old school Space Hulk color scheme of purple and blue.  I am redoing some older models in the process too.

My repaint of an old genestealer...
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi473.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Frr92%2Frezzzed%2Fgene1.jpg&hash=12425910be8fd820a5096b1eef3811b4aee542aa)

My ravener...

My zoanthrope...
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi473.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Frr92%2Frezzzed%2Fzoan1.jpg&hash=ac68269ed24b15ee691058728f5818ac378988c8)

This is a warrior conversion in the works.  I happened to have 3 of the old school buck toothed warriors.  I always hated their limbs and heads, so I used the extra heads and limbs from the sprue and a repaint to make this guy.  I included a comparison of what he looked like before I did this.  I still need to put his deathspitter on him...
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi473.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Frr92%2Frezzzed%2Fwar1.jpg&hash=948cf83cd4e664f54cea0a28737320516f46100a)

Hope you all like, I have a lot more to do still.

EDIT: I was just looking at those pix and noticed they are a little dark.  My camera batteries were dying and the flash didn't go off.  I will try to post some more using the flash and when I have a few more models done.

Please do not double post. Use the "Modify" button to edit your original post.

Thanks, it's based on a hornet actually, but on camera it comes out a little too red. I tested the main scheme in photoshop before panting the models:

The main goal was to have a color scheme that implies a feeling of maximum aggression, like a swarm of hornets coming towards you. From the look on the face of my gaming opponent, i have succeded:)

Those are quite lovely.  Being a field biologist I love it when people use real critters for inspiration...

I almost used a rattlesnake-esque design on mine, but thought it would be a little cheesy. I'm just waiting on the yellow jacket scheme, I would probably be pretty terrified of that one with my personal experiences...

Ok, here are two more close ups of my tyranids, first up is a picture I did for my Army of the Quarter sig I had earlier in the year. It shows a warrior plus some rippers. Second is a mass of guants assaulting a marine position in a game with Deathpepper.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi178.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fw277%2FFocslain%2F100_0905.jpg&hash=74a6ecd14b18a183410ac00f86b8597b825ed100)

I’m trying to get a decent picture of Bertha (my canifex), but my camera isn’t being helpful.

Firstly you make an account on a free image hosting side like this one (http://photobucket.com/). Than you upload your pics there. Having done that, you take the link, the side provides for each pic, use the image tabs when you reply (the button for those is located below the Bold writing button) and put the link in.

finally, Ive gotten time to upload the pics. ;D

Behold, my rendition of hive fleet behemoth...
... and a bunch of random grey tyranids. :)
In advanced... ...some blurry pics :'(
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi356.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo4%2FHivemind801%2FHiveTyrant.jpg&hash=cfbe9fcca46818961fc3767c194b616c423fe6ab)
This is my tyrant my pride and joy, i even put magnets in 'im.
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi356.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo4%2FHivemind801%2FPIC_0017.jpg&hash=f3471fb4334d876157746d7f0eed21e1778640a7)
this is my only painted carnifex.
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi356.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo4%2FHivemind801%2FPIC_0021.jpg&hash=5f7cbb3039a02f958413668fe39cab46a906ea27)
That is my army of beasts, though not too easy to see it is:
1 tyrant
3 carnifexes
40 termagaunts
14 hormagaunts
3 ripper swarms
2 zoanthropes
2 biovores
6 warriors
and (not in pic) about 20 sporemines.

Even though this is a tyranid forum im going to post this anyway.
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi356.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo4%2FHivemind801%2FPIC_0019.jpg&hash=ff529cd966d5d8c6c27e708b84bd3a1aa0e0ef54)
My little brother bought the AOBR and he wanted me to paint his dreadnought, so i did.
What do ya think?
again sorry for the blurry pics. :-\

Hi all,

I thought I would get around to letting others see my Nid army.  Some figures are missing and some are still not finished, but here you are.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi388.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo323%2FMarikar_bucket%2FPICT0179.jpg&hash=144c84c8205aa74fc8ca18a00c88283745391f7c)Stealers at the back, guants in foreground.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi388.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Foo323%2FMarikar_bucket%2FPICT0180.jpg&hash=65e65cc982e4c93d14e8128a7ea217c21d29eb84) BroodLord and retinue of stealers.  The different colour scheme is because they infiltrate and need the camo.  the BL has feeder tendrils modeled its my first conversion.

unfortunately my camera wont take closeups

Anyway, here is my contribution to this thread, my unnamed army:

may aswell add this
its the beginning of my nid army....
i'm in the middle of doing my next 'fex, then only 22 gaunts, 16 hormagaunts, 26 stealers, 10 warriors, biovore to go!!!  ....well, and a new hive tyrant when i get enough money.   i got ALL of whats listed above bar 1 fex and 8 stealers for £50.  bargain or what? (theres also a zoanthrope which is already painted)
what do you guys think of the scheme?

Color scheme looks quite insectoid, especially like lush climate ones. The only thing i find... strange is the tongue color. I am not which color would be good but blue seems... strange ..   ::)
Title: Re: Magos Biologis: Strains of Terror (Nid Army Pics)
Post by: kipper on April 11, 2009, 05:27:42 AM
the reason for the blue tounge was...well.... i have very limited amount of colours to use. hence why there is a few pots of the old, old style pots.

it was either red, grey, gold or blue.   i dont think it looks to weird.  and if the entire army has blue tounges then it will just look normal.

man this is awsome, looking through these army pic's has inspired me to get off my backside and finish off my swarm. nid's are the first army i did for 40k and started as a small mob off gaunts lead by some hardy warriors that has since grown to a full size swarm and my pride and joy so heres my fleet with some close ups of my fav's:

It's been two years now that i painted my first genestealer. Tonight i finished the last one:) I find Genestealers very hard to do, because of the creases in the back, so I'm glad, that I won't have to paint any more.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.irrlichtartwork.de%2FTEMP%2FPIX_FLEET%2F02.jpg&hash=ca52600f81adf644fb9f0fe4b6ddcf90ee3a75c7) (http://www.irrlichtartwork.de/TEMP/PIX_FLEET/02.jpg)

Here are some pictures of everything that is completely painted. My army has something about 5200 points, so there's still a lot of work ahead of me....including the finishing of the barbed hierodule in the back, many many ripperswarms and some classic models like old one eye and the red terror.

Looking good, guys! But, this thread needs more activity! :D

I'll make a one image contribution (since I haven't really painted any more nids except this since my last post in this thread).

I'll try to put up some pics of my army, but they are really hard to photgraph because they are basically solid black and white with orange stripes. I'm not a big painter so I just came up with a simple but good looking scheme.

Sorry for the double post, but I wanted to make sure this would bump so people would make sure to see Hive Fleet Box Elder Bug in all its slightly blurry glory. First, this is a Box Elder Bug:

I'm not done with my army yet, but here's two battleforces that I've finished with (except the bases).  It's a Leviathan color scheme, only I tried to match the endoskeleton of the box art, instead of that glow in the dark bone white.

Coolest Hive Fleet Leviathan I ever saw! ;D Only critigue I have is that the green details don't really seem to fit in with the rest of the colour scheme.

@GaleRazorwind: Although the images are blurry i would say that your army looks very cool. The colourscheme may be simple but it's nevertheless very effective. It reminds me of the colours of a black widow.... I bet your opponents are wetting their pants:)
Never heard of that bug before but it always adds a very strong sense of plausibility to tyranids if you base them on some real thing. I wish the images were better, have you tried to use a tripod to stabilize your camera?

@Eugee: Wow, that Leviathan Army is sweet. Anytime i look at pictures of the GW-Army i wish they would have used something less bleak and white, so your decision makes absolutely sense to me. Great job.

^Here in Minnesota, USA, everyone knows what a box elder bug is and they always crack up when they hear my Nids are based on them. In the Fall, they like to gather by the thousands on Box Elder trees, which are a type of maple tree. They will also swarm on regular maple trees too. Then, they move to sun themselves on the walls of houses. At night, they crawl into cracks in your walls and windows and get inside your walls where they will invariable find their way inside, where they are quite happy to be. They buzz around lights, crawl on walls, and overall just annoy the hell out of everyone. Every time it gets warm outside, more bugs will show up. They invade our house every year and we don't stop seeing them until late March.

I definitely wouldn't fancy all the painting though. Might have to resort to dipping the little blighters.

^To make my color scheme, I first give everything an orange coat of spray paint, then a black coat of spraypaint, and then I do one color at a time on all the models before moving to a different color. I basically only use blazing orange and skull white for the talons. Even so, it does still take several hours to get everyone painted...

I wish i had gone for such a simplistic but effective colourscheme.....

Someone asked me, what colours i use and so i think i will post my workflow here, maybe it is of some interest to you:

First of all i used some pictures of the local hornets as a starting point. I tested some schemes in Photoshop and pinned the printed images as a reference above my painting table. It looks something like this:

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.irrlichtartwork.de%2FTEMP%2FNyarlathotep_Malschema.jpg&hash=09246259fcf3e544525a34c84e6f96d417fff463) (http://www.irrlichtartwork.de/TEMP/Nyarlathotep_Malschema.jpg)

After many weeks experimenting i developed a decent workflow that is still too long to be effective for such a large army, but hey, painting is half of the fun, so i don't care how long it takes. Here's what i do:

01- Base Coat with Chaos-Black Spraypaint
02- First overpaint with blood red (not too much, black still visible)
03- Second overpaint with blood red (opaque with black still visible in gaps)
04- Drybrush highlighting with Mechrite Orange
05- Using thinned chaos black to fill the creases and slots especially at the hinges and joints
06- Filling the mouth and eye sockets and painting the Claws and hoofs with chaos black.
07- Painting all carapaces with skull white as a basecoat for the yellow paint (which won't be opaque on the black/red otherwise)- Also painting teeth and eyes white.
08- A layer of golden yellow over white basecot on carapaces.
09- Painting the patterns on the backs and drybrushing the bases with Dark flesh. I wanted every subspecies to have its own distinguishable set of lines and curves, so that they may be easily recognized on the battlefield. So Hormies got different patterns than Raveners and so on....figuring this out took quite a while...
10- Painting the inner markings of the patterns with Chaos black
11- Giving the bases some more light with vomit brown
12- Highlighting bases with Bleached Bone
13- Highlighting the highpoints on arms and legs with a small line of vomit brown
14- Giving the weapons and claws a metallic finish with boltgun metal (my idea was, that the tyranid organisms produce some kind of metallic oxide to form their weapon-biomorphs. This way it looks like a crossbreed between "held" weapons and bodyparts).
15- finishing details on weapons with either tinbitz or shining gold/burnished gold
16- Painting the tongues with dark angels green (acid maws get two more layers of lighter greens for highlighting)
17- Using a little flesh wash (only got one left....hope it will last for the rest of the army for it is no longer available but far superior to the new washes) on the teethridge to make it look less clean.
18- giving the carapaces a full treatment with 'ardcoat, drybrush the bodies with 'ardcoat. (I used to use the satin varnish spray but some day GW changed something with the mixture and i ruined six full painted minis. Since then i only use varnish that can be applied with a brush)
19- Painting the rim of the base with khemri brown.

Ok, that...that's quite a long workflow.....i don't advice to use something like this for a 5000 points army, because you might, like me, take forever to get the bugs painted:))

Have fun

PS: I love this thread btw...NIDS for the win...

^You have some really awesome looking bugs. Much more work than I would ever be willing or able to do, but my simple paint scheme is very effective, still looks awesome on the battlefield, and every Minnesotan LOVES the theme. It is so fun to watch people's reactions when I tell them I play Hive Fleet Box Elder Bug. There are usually two different reactions. The first kind is where they immediately crack up with laughter, and the second kind (and my favorite) is a slow dawning reaction. You can see them think about it, then slowly their face changes from thinking about it to smiles and laughter. Priceless 8)

Pre-dip warriors (excuse the glare):

This is the very first Genestealer.  It's the beginning of my small Nid force.  It's a WIP at the moment, but it's a good example of the color scheme I'm aiming for.

I wanted something a bit more natural and simplistic.  The goal is a kind of desert/barren coloring.  Also, in needed to be easy to paint, otherwise I know that I will never finish painting the large number of units.  Now, I may add some more colorful details for the big bugs, since they aren't supposed to be sneaky like the Stealers.

Very nice model, just like i would imagine a tyrannofex.

Maybe i will start a conversion too, but i still have hope of GW releasing another carnifex/tyrannofex/tervigon kit, just like they did with the different baneblade variants.

For those who are not sure what I did.  the Rupture cannon is built from the front end of two barbed stranglers with the bottom one inverted.  These are joined using GS.  The rear of the gun is molded in a quarter circle and is only as thick at the bottom as the gun.  The ribs have been extended to make the whole thing look as if it is an extention of the ribcage.
Again the whole rear of the gun is modeled from GS.

For those who have really been paying attention you may have noted that I have done a completely new paint job.  This is extended over my whole army!   I will publish some pics soon.

I was supposed to post a pic from my army, but instead, I started repainting it.

Basically I'm painting all that was black to bone, all eyes black with white gleam, and all poison blue instead of old green.

Now done all multiwound models exept MC:s.

Here's a warrior to demonstrate.

Very nice model, just like i would imagine a tyrannofex.

Maybe i will start a conversion too, but i still have hope of GW releasing another carnifex/tyrannofex/tervigon kit, just like they did with the different baneblade variants.

First of wicked kick #$@ conversion!!

Second, don't think they'll be redoing the carnifex sprues.
Look at the Mawloc/Trygon model, it's so much bigger then a carni...and i think we'll be seeing a Tervigon/Tyronnofex model probably..Carni size just doesn't fit the stats, especially the wounds.

@ Marikar:

I love it!  I was considering doing the same thing with one of my Sniper Fex's, although I was considering doubling a pair of Venom Cannons.  Now that you finished the model, do you think Venom Cannons would work out or should I use the Barb Stranglers like you did?

I picture from an underside view of him would be great!!  A better pic of the gun itself would be a real help!

For Master Titan and others,
some close up shots of the cannon from below.   Sorry for the poor quality of the pictures since lighting the model was difficult.

YES!!!!  Freakin awesome dude!  I love it!  I should be starting my conversions sometime next week including a Tervigon or two, a Swarm Lord, and a Terragon similar to yours.  You don't by chance have pictures of it before painting do you?  I know, I'm so demanding! ;D

Some of my old tyranid pictures:

97% of my nids are painted, except for some very small details on their bases.

Still have a few to paint:
1 zoat
2 warriors
various old nid squigs
1 magus
1 second edition termagant
10 slayer hunters
I bought these on ebay 2 years ago, but I've been painting Dark Eldar only these last few years.

I plan on expanding, but I've been busy expanding my Dark Eldar. I'll buy forgeworlds some day, but I'll buy new units during the summer probably, I haven't even tried out the new codex. I'm going to buy it, buy our new units and I definetely have to get myself a trygon.
Most of my army is painted, so if I buy more units I'll just paint them immediately and I'll start playing.

LoL when I saw this picture I started doubting whether you stole my nids!
It's either an amazing coicidence or you just saw my nids before.
In either case it's great to see nids with almost the same color sheme as mine!
Both our Hive fleets are closely related on the genetic side : D

Lol. That's awesome. You must be my bug brotha from anotha mutha... or... erm... Norn Queen, rather. That pic of your bugs on your desk really does look similar to my paint scheme. Good job having so many of your bugs painted. I still only have about 40-50% of mine finished. And I still need to base almost all of them too. >_<

I'm working on a 1000 point force for a doubles tournament. My partner is playing blood angels with some termies and a terminator librarian, and I've got genestealer heavy nids (space hulk theme overall). Eventually I'll expand the list to 1850 points or so.

So far I've got a bunch of genestealers, a broodlord and a warrior painted, plus a hormagaunt test model. My picture taking is lagging my progress a bit, but I figured I'd share what I have on hand.

First off is the test hormagaunt, obviously converted. There's one big unit of these guys in the list, which will be a mix of ones converted like this, some more that are the front half of a hormagaunt mashed with the back end of a ripper and some stock assembled ones.
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi844.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fab8%2FTestors%2FP1030942.jpg&hash=87249df9ae744417c65187ba1b5a017960be084c)

Next is the first unit I completed for the list, a little unit of 5 Ymgarl Genestealers. Other than the affectionately named 'squid faces' (which are greenstuffed on), they're stock space hulk stealers.
(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi844.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fab8%2FTestors%2FP1030955.jpg&hash=6faa6354946d63592f39d05fd320eb9c658826c1)

The tournament is toward the end of September, so by then I should have more pictures of the rest of the list :)

Oh and one other picture I had kicking around - a step by step of how I did my genestealers. Figure I'll toss it up here for anyone looking for inspiration.

Skin: hormagaunt purple+rotting flesh, wash leviathan purple, highlight using mixes of hormagaunt purple+rotting flesh, glaze with watered down leviathan purple.
Carapace: mordian blue, badab black wash, highlight using mixes of mordian blue+fortress grey.
Claws: graveyard earth, highlight using mixes of graveyard earth, bleached bone and skull white.

Hive Fleet Yuengling

Used the Online Tyranid Painter (http://www.fallensunasylum.org/nids/online_painter.html) to finalize the scheme:

Obviously - the one on the right:

So far I have only completed a 'testgant', but I'll try to update this when I get more done.  So for now, the first of Hive Fleet Phasma:

May I present, Hive Fleet Hercual. I painted them with the Hercules beetle in mind, one that I found on the net who had a very nice color for the carapace. I tried to get it as close as possible. No link, sorry.

My first Carnifex, last edition.

@ Avatar of the Eldar: Loving hive fleet Kali-Ma! Did you take that from Indiana Jones and the Templee of Skulls? Is that a Crusaders Mycetic Spore? I've always wanted one of them! How did you make the Tervigon, it's AMAZING?!?
@ Testors: Lovin the paint scheme! The extra-serpentine hormagaunt is soo cool! Great job on the SH Genestealers!
@ everybody else: Great work everyone! I've seen some great paint jobs and conversions! Keep up the good work!!!

Post by: Macman_EKIM on January 20, 2011, 02:35:36 PM
This is my army thus far. I have painted all of this up within 2 weeks or so using a scheme that I may have robbed from some unknown source  ;)
I still have a Malwoc, Carnifex, Doom, FW Hive Tyrant left to paint. Also as far as army composition is concerned I may pick up a Venomthrope or 2 cause I like the model. Let me know what you think about my little bugs as its my first time painting in a LONG time. What can I improve upon? If you need better pictures just ask, I am always seeking constructive criticism.

Damn!  2 weeks to paint all that!?  It's taking me forever to put paint on 1 unit of 22 Hormagaunts!  I'm detailed oriented and have a 10 month old boy, so time is actually quite thin.  They look great and I can't wait to see the Doom painted to get a better look at it.

I have to say that your boneswords look really good on the Warriors and I just might steal the idea if I don't buy the resin ones made by...............uh, can't remember but I have the link bookmarked.  Trust me, its the Cabernet Sauvignon that I have been drinking.

I also love the Trygon ST on the Hive Tyrant, looks really good and proportional instead of the larger Carnifex ones.  I'm going to steal that idea too!  Sorry, but it looks that good.

Imitation is the greatest form of flattery my friend. I shouldnt say it was 2 week for it all. I had the trygon, stealers, and gaunts done a long time ago, the hive tyrant, hive guard, zoans, and warriors were all done in about 2 weeks time.

it's taken a few years of buying off of other nid players and rying to find a bits guy that doesn't charge an arm and a leg per ripper. I've actually spent about 1/2 my budget on the actutal rippers, a 1/4 on bases for them, and the last 1/4 on the parts for my Parasite. I'd love to paint them, but being blind and them being so small makes it hard. i tried to paint one squad, it really didn't turn out that well.

very much so, drop the Ripper Gaunts on the side, and i can field the full 6 squads and the 2 skylasher squads with the parasite for 1474. granted that's 9kp in 1,500, but it's awesome to do!

Here is my Swarmlord and Hormagaunts.  The Carapace on them all need a bit more touch up and highlighting, I'm just to eager to post them prior to completion.  Oh, and of course the bases need painting as well.  C&C welcome!

Nice job!!! How did you make the blades?

Paulson Games, if I'm not mistaken. Scything Talons cut off at the wrist, P.G.'s BSs glued on.

That is correct.  They really are nice blades.  The ones for Warriors and Shrikes are quite flimsy but good nonetheless.  I did convert GW Boneswords for the left arms previously but I didn't like them.  Plus I am a big WYSIWYG person with my own army, so I wanted different swords to show the difference between Boneswords and Bonesabres.  Especially because I use the same SwarmLord model as my HT, the arms are magnitized/removable.

I like the cold & ice-theme of your army. That is something that hasn't been done often before and is a very fresh and cool idea.

Post some more picts please...I would like to see how you did the magnetizing stuff.

Very nice Ramos.  I was wondering when you were going to post newer and updated photos.  Lets see more, the paint looks great!  I was debating whether or not to base my flying bases or to leave them clear.  Clearly it looks better to base them.

Thanks BT. I agree on the based bases. They look more natural on the battlefield.
I'm starting now my hive tyrant. Hopefully i'll post again in a pair of weeks. I'm usually to tyred to paint when i arrive from work, but i'm hoping to finish the hive tyrant soon.

Thankfully,

Some of the heavy hitters in Hive Fleet Antiquitus.

My first heavy conversion project and my favorite piece, a Tyrannofex with Rupture Cannon.  The core of the model is a plastic crab that I bought at a party supply store for $4.00

My Harpy, still unpainted, took top honors at this years US Games Day in Chicago for Monstrous Conversion.  Couldn't believe it.

And my most recent conversion, a Tervigon.  This is built upon a plastic horseshoe crab toy that I bought off of Ebay.  I've always envisioned the Termigants exiting out of ports on the top/sides of the Tervigon as opposed to dropping out of the bottom onto their heads and then having to navigate a forest of talon legs.  Still need to do some final painting and polishing and of course base it.

More pics to come.

Damn Dude!  That Harpy conversion is awesome!!!  I would really steal your inspiration if it wasn't for them generally sucking.  I will be sure to refer back to it when/if the codex and/or Harpy entry gets a revision.  And of course if there isn't a model produced for it.

Thanks MBT.  I really did enjoy making that conversion.  Like most 'Nid players I want the Harpy to be worth fielding.  It's a great model to make if you've got the time, but sadly just isn't worth putting in a list.  I've played him once (Still unpanited) and he went down faster than a Zeppelin at a Journey concert when everyone holds up their lighters and sings along to "Open Arms".  My fingers are crossed on the beast getting some love from any new flyer rules, but I'm not holding my breath on any GW model coming out soon.  How long have we been geeking over rumors of a second wave only to have the alledged release dats pass by again and again?  Not a lot of love going the 'Nid way from England these days.

The Swarmlord joins Hive Fleet Antiquitus!  The body is a current edition Hive Tyrant.  The head is from an earlier edition.  Bone sabres were acquired from eBay.  The base is by Armorcast.

Glimpses of the Hive Fleet Ereptor has been spotted from the edges of the known galaxy. It seems to have entered some sort of hibernation state, very little activity has been spotted. However, it seems to keep growing in numbers, whether it is due to being able to breed more creatures during hibernation, or perhaps it is simply gathering the fleet together and only seems to be growing.

That is to say, I havent been gaming fo ages, 'cause I've been really breeding more little Exalted Ones, but luckilly there has been some progress in my tyranid swarm as well.  ;D

So in the long void of when the tyranid board was slumbering, Hive Fleet Box Elder Bug got eaten by Hive Fleet Kraken, and the result was fantastic enough that the GW store in Minnesota gave them their own shelf:

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi161.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ft206%2FZephyr89%2FNidsonDisplay_zps4qfhj15h.jpg&hash=498127f2241c8189804c9496ea019cd033c1ba3d) (http://s161.photobucket.com/user/Zephyr89/media/NidsonDisplay_zps4qfhj15h.jpg.html)

The picture doesn't really do them justice, since the carapace details are basically invisible (they have orange edges and streaks), but they are so bright that they don't block out the sun, they replace it XD

Seriously, these things glow with angelic brilliance on the table top. It's been a long journey from my first crappy models, but I'm finally painting my nids in a way that does them justice.
