« on: February 27, 2008, 09:23:38 AM »
Ok,  I've probably done this the wrong way round - I've built up my nid army without really using the codex for apprpriateness and will be playing my first battle against a 1000pt Imperial Guard army.  With the army list below - bearing in mind WYSIWYG - what could I do to improve my chances?  btw I've also got a ravener and 8 hormagaunts.

Welcome to the site and the world of tyraninds!
General problems I can see in the list:

1) you are trying to make both monstrus creatures and warrior broods good at both close combat and ranged shooting at the same time. In the old old days this was possible, now though you have to pick on and focus on it. Take monstrus creatures (you tyrant and fex) they are best (when walking) to be ranged killed as they only move 6 inches a turn and have no bonus to assault distance - thus any oppponent can dance away from them - which means that your big heave monster will not see close combat till near the end of the game -- and that is too late. With guns they can lay down fire from turn 1 and deal out significant damage throughout the game.
Common builds for tyrants:
Dakka tyrant - armed with 2 sets of twin linked devourers, toxin sacs and enhanced senses: this is a machine gunning monster with rerolls for hitting and wounding - a nasty bit of work! Often he is given wings so as to bring the short ranged guns into range of the enemy all the quicker (and in this case he is also given warp field for defence)
Sniper Tyrant - tyrant armed with toxin sacs, enhanced senses, extended carapace vennom cannom and barbed strangle; a walker only as he has long ranged guns this is a heavy ranged hitter - good but he is not as good as the sniperfex (due to the carnifexes increased strength) often the stranger is not taken and scything talons or devourers are taken for a cheap other option - this monsters strength is in dealing out 3 vennom canon shots a turn
Scythingtyrant - armed with wings, 2 sets of scything talons and warpfield this is a close combat monster - not a character hunter (due to force and power weapons) but he is a hunter of tanks and killer of marine squades! Note that other close combat upgrades are often taken on him (eg ws modifiers)

Common builds for carnifexes
the same two as above for ranged - close combat is genearly avoided because of a lack of ability to make him move any faster - note that he does not need toxin sacs as all guns fire at max strength on a fex -(the entry for the barbed strangler is wrong - there is not need for a second price).

Warriors
your shooting warriors don't need adrenal glands - focus on the ranged aspect and give them enhanced senses instead. Also consider that devourers have a greater chance to hit than deathspitters do.
you close combat warrior would benefit greatly from taking leaping legs - increased charge distance is a great bonus to take. He also does not need toxin sacs, rending claws are what kills for this beast!
In general though you have a squade made for both ranged and shooting - so keep your model for close combat and try to add to your warrior collection (as rending claws are like golddust to tyranid players)

Gaunts - There is a good thread running at the moment on thus biomorph and it does have uses, but they are very limited and specialist - better to ignor this upgrade altogether in a general list. Consider that when the brood (and all the gaunts have to die first) returns it not only starts way back at the back of your army, and thus has to cross the battle field to get back into combat, but that your opponent already has the points from killing them the first time

Some mistakes in this list - but in all honesty they are mistakes that we have all made in the past (including myself) so don't feel bad

Great feedback - much appreciated!

However, I'll have to implement those changes as I get more models, as my list is now WYSiWYG as far as my models go.

See what you mean about WON - I'll have to give it a go to see how it works.  A lot of the tables at my GW are 48x48, so it may not be too much of an issue (apart from points!).

ANyone else got anymore feedback on how I should play with the posted list?

Thanks,

Philth

Due to time limitations we only fielded 500pts, Tyranid vs Imperial Guard -

3 x warriors (venom cannon, deathspitter, cc)
22 x Termagants (WON, fleshborer)
1 x Biovore (tox)
1 x Ravener
6 x Genestealers

It was a complete disaster - 2 of my 3 warriors were killed by autocannon fire on the first turn (thought they were tougher to be honest).  The remaining warrior missed his only shot with the venom cannon (5+ to hit???) and was wiped out.

Downhill from there really - no synapse so termies pretty much did nothing.  stealerstook out a unit in close combat which was nice.  Ravener didnt get to do jack. And Biovore got a couple of hits in.

Think I've got to go back to the drawing board.......

below 500points is actually very hard for tyranids to do well when compared to other races (and we loath combat partrol ;)). Personally I would have taken the warriors and thrown in a zoanthrope as well - cheap and tough. Then I would have boosted genestealer numbers high (as they are not synapse reliant and in 500 point synapse is often very limited). I have also seen hormagaunts do well as the increased charge range means that they can get stuck into close combat early and avoid fire.
