Title: Second Chances (OOC)
Post by: The Nightwalker on November 30, 2011, 08:20:59 AM
Alright. I am running a new game. Ill take 5 players. Your goal will be to survive, and to complete any side quests that come along. It will be very free reign.

Here is why it will be different and a little odd. You guys may be a character from anytime from the present to ancient history. So yes I mean one of you can be a cowboy while another is a roman legionare. Also you have all died. You will all also be the same age, no matter how old you were before death. Between 20-30. Also don't be real historical significant characters, make them up.

Name:
Date of Birth:
Date of Death:
Gender:
Occupation: (What your role in History was)
Specialist Skills: (Farming, Archery, Gunsmithing, Ect. What it is you are best at. 1-3 Skills.)
General Skills: (3-5 Skills. Any other skills you have. Moderate sword fighting skill, driving, or something of that sort.)
Misc: Anything you think we should know.
Background: (Your characters past life story.)
Inventory: (You have everything you were wearing at your time of death. But not what you were holding in your hands. So if you had a sword in your belt, you get to keep it.)

So, then, it's a Riverworld RP?  Sounds neat.  I'll certainly participate, so just give me a little to come up with, I want to make sure it's an interesting character and not just an optimized for survival type.

Can we assume that we'll get magical language translation, as in Riverworld, or will that be a barrier to overcome?

Shoot I forgot about Riverworld. Must be where my idea came from.

Ill start with the translation question. Though ill keep it as discreet as possible, your characters may at some point have chances to figure everything out. There will be crystals every so often on the planet. These are sources of pure power, around which you will see a glowing transparent bubble. Inside the bubble you all somehow no what eachother are saying, you also can tell what people are saying when you touch hands.

Another thing to keep in mind. Every 24 hours you can touch the crystal and summon whatever your thinking of. As long as it fits in a box the length and width of a shoebox, but half as tall. You must have a complete understanding of the stuff you summon. For example, a small arms expert or gunsmith could have a Glock in the box. But they would have to picture the gun field stripped and assemble the pistol from the parts after they got them.

Does this help?

ok, this sounds fun, how about this
Name: Jason Mark
Date of Birth: 1876
Date of Death:1908
Gender: Male
Occupation: Bush Tracker
Specialist Skills: Tracking, Trapping, knife throwing
General Skills: firearms training, shelter building, stealth.
Misc: standing at a large 6' 9", jason towers over most other people, and is also quite strong due to the fact he is always lugging around animals and criminals caught in his traps. jason developed a taste for australian rum a quite a young age, and will often take a drink to calm his nerves when about to make a big catch

Background: jason was born and raised in the northen territory of australia, into a troubled family. his father left when he was just 6 so he was basicaly raised by his mother. at the age of 17, his mother passed away from a fever. she died in his arms. having no family left, Jason set off to find his father. he tramped around in the bush for a few months, living of the land and any animals he could catch in his traps. he bought a rifle and a large bowie knife using the money he had saved up selling animal hides, and taught himself to use them. one day, when he was in town, he found a bounty notice with a picture of his father on it. it said that he had a bounty of $2500 on his head, and double if he was brought back alive. so Jason once again set out to find his father, putting the skills he had aquired tracking game to use. after a few days in the bush, he found his camp, and set a trap to ensnare him. after catching him, he lugged him back to town, handed him over to the sheriff and grinned as his father was hung. Jason soon built up a reputation for himself as a resourceful bounty hunter and Mark's Mark, as it came to be called, was feared by all lawbreakers, for if Jason mark chooses you as his mark, he will find you, and he will catch you, it just depended on his mood whether the trap was deadly or not. his death came, not surprisingly, while he was tracking another mark, in a swamp. he was surprised by a large crocodile as he came too close to the waterside, and was dragged under before he even had a chance to draw his knife. it was the first time he failed to catch his mark.

Inventory:a leather jerkin which he wears over and olive shirt and a worn pair of jeans, his leather cowboy hat, a belt which holds some spare amunition, a flint and steel and his bowie knife, a small bottle of rum, which he keeps in his front pocket for easy access, and his .308 rifle slung across his back.

I am in on this. I need to think a bit to come up the proper character, but I will be in.

Just a thought, but am thinking of doing Stonewall Jackson. If do so, may I have Little Sorel as well (that is his horse)

I'm still in on this.  I've just been swamped by finals, though I think I'll be making use of one of them for background for my character.  I'll try to post up a character by Teusday, once reading week has started (though I'll not be very active until after New Years, most likely, what with holidays and finals and all).

Also, @faitherun, the OP said this:
Also don't be real historical significant characters, make them up.

Yes Faith, I'd prefer everyone to make up their characters. I think it'll run more smoothly that way. You could easily be a rebel under Jackson though.

I'm not sure what you mean. But the top of the page has the format I wrote. Just fill out the information for whatever character you wish to play.

Simple, you pick what you think your character would know. My games are usually very imaginative. You make up everything about your character.

Name: Daud ibn Nathan

Date of Birth: 1106

Date of Death: 1178

Gender: Male

Occupation: Trader, merchant, etc.

Specialist Skills: Polyglot, Silver-tongued, Appraiser

General Skills: Self defense, Literate, Amateur cartographer, Well connected, Learned (Jewish texts, arithmetic)

Misc: Daud's young form is ~5'6'' with a dark complexion born of his Middle Eastern background.  He has tight, curly dark brown hair and brown eyes.  He is fairly well built, used to lifting cargo, constantly traveling, and practicing his basic swordplay, and wears a beard which is neatly trimmed.  He speaks Hebrew, Arabic, Castilian Spanish, a number of Indian dialects, Latin, and a smattering of Chinese and medieval Germanic/French/Frankish languages.  In addition, Daud can read and write Hebrew, Arabic, Castilian Spanish, Latin, fewer Indian dialects, and very little Chinese.

Background: Daud ibn Nathan was born in Sura to a rabbinic family.  His great grandfather studied in the Academy of the Sura Gaon, one of the two most learned men in the world from whom all Jews sought answers to their legal and religious questions.  Daud's father and grandfather followed their family's tradition and entered into lives of study.  While they did their best to bring Daud into the family business - teaching him the texts and traditions since he could hear - he was ultimately lured into the glamorous life of the traveling merchant.  Really, it was his neighbor Muhammad who dragged Daud on his first trip outside of Sura.  Muhammad's father had a trip planned to Pumbedita, where Daud's father needed to get a letter sent, so Daud volunteered to go with the local merchants.

There was no way Daud would spend the rest of his life stuck in one town mulling over thousand-year-old law codes.

After a few trips to local towns with Muhammad's family Daud joined up with a series of traders, completing two circuits of the Mediterranean Sea and a number of treks inland over the next ten years.  During these travels Daud picked up a scattering of a few languages beyond his natural tongues of Hebrew and Arabic (plus written Aramaic), mostly Latin (to converse with men of authority who would grant merchants passage into their lands) and a few key phrases which work in any language (to sell to the actual patrons).  He also learned a bit of basic unarmed combat and swordplay to help ward off a bandit or two, should his official note of protection not be enough to deter them.

Daud returned to his home of Sura from these apprenticeships at the age of 23 to attend his father's funeral, having missed the death of his grandfather while on his adventures.  After burying his father and visiting his grandfather Daud sat for the week of mourning he felt that he had to stay in Sura.  He had missed his father and grandfather's passing and, though the community would surely watch over his mother, he couldn't just leave her alone.  Daud found work for a few years at a local trading house as an authenticator of goods, assuring that everything was on the up-and-up.  Daud married the daughter of one of the local Rabbis and settled down for another three years before he and his wife, Rachel, decided to make a trip to Israel.  Daud got a pass from the Islamic government to trade throughout the region, turning their religious trek into an economic venture.

This trip reignited the spark for exploration in Daud and he convinced Rachel to join him in trading throughout the world.  The couple sold what they had in Sura, making sure that their parents were set to live, and that the community would watch after them, and left with cash and a cart down the Euphrates.  They then took a boat all the way out past the reaches of the Islamic Empire, staying with Jewish communities along the way.  Daud and Rachel established themselves as premier spice and silk traders, running a leg of the silk road around the coast of India.  They continued to run the rout for eighteen years, before their son and daughters took over for them.

Daud and Rachel retired back to Sura to visit their families' graves and to be buried with them when the time came.  Two years later Rachel died at 49.  Daud never really recovered from the loss of Rachel, not retaking a job for a number of years, until, at the bris of one of his grandchildren he impressed a man in the service of the king of Castile who gave him a job in the king's palace.  Daud left Sura, only to return once more at the age of 71.  Daud died at the age of 72.  He had met his grandchildren, seen that his children had grown into fine people, his son continuing the trade which Daud had claimed for himself.  Daud died in his study, weeping over a portrait of his wife that she could not have lived to see them grow into their own with him.

Inventory: Loose red robes, slippers, a warm shawl, a golden ring, brown pants, signet rings from the housed he served

Name: Joseph Edward Charles

Date of Birth: 27th July, 1914

Date of Death: 8th September 1939, Age 25

Gender: Male

Occupation: Detective

Specialist Skills: Deductive and analytics, Interview, Crime Scene Investigation.

General Skills: athletics, basic biology and anatomy, Firearms training, Boxing, gambling.

Misc: Standing 6’ on the button, Joseph can command attention when it suits his needs, or fade into obscurity when it doesn’t. His frame is thin, yet hides muscles.  His blondish brown hair is neatly trimmed, and a small trimmed mustache sits gently in-between his nose and mouth.

Background:
Joseph was fated to live a life marked by war. The single child of Rose Adrian Charles (22) and Edward Henry Charles (25), Joseph was born on July 27th, 1914. His father was a young Cartwright in North Lincoln, and his mother worked for a local florist. On July 28th, Edward Henry Charles was conscripted into the British army, kissing his new born son and wife good bye for the last time. Edward would never again see his family; in 1916 he died during the Battle of Somme.

Mary was grief stricken over the death of her husband Edward, in the ensuing months she took her own life, hanging herself outside their country home. Days later the neighbors where attracted to the house by the sounds of a screaming child, only to find the rotten corpse of his mother outside and a starving child within.
In the months that followed, Joseph was sent to live with his Uncle in New York. An aged detective for the NYPD, his uncle was ten years older than Edward had been. Joseph George Charles, whom Joseph had been named after had moved to New York in his late teens, seeking a better life in the promise of the new world, was now a hardened and bitter man. At first he resented his nephew, for he dearly loved his little brother and the boy only proved a reminder of what more he had lost. You see, George didn’t have much, his fiancé passed away from a fever when he was only 20, and life in the United States had been hard on him, living in a small flat close to the rails. Still in time, his heart softened to the boy, and he inherited much of what Edward and Mary left behind.

As Joseph grew, George raised him as best he could, by the time Joseph was 12 he had a keen mind and sharp eye. Often he would come home from school and stay up into the early morning helping his Uncle untangle cases. He proved so helpful that George received several commendations and a promotion to a healthy desk job, overseeing several detectives and their cases.

It was George’s influence that led Joseph to a detective’s career, and by the age of 17 he was already working for the NYPD. At the age of 18, George retired from the force and move back to Lincoln, while there he found an old family gold pocket watch that had been given to Edward by their father. He passed this watch onto Joseph, whom was more a son then nephew now.

Several eventful years passed for Joseph, he and his partner John Edwards made a name for themselves in and outside the force. His passion for his work was only matched by his disgust for Germans, and as tensions in Europe grew, so did his hate.

Driven by his obsession, against the consul of his Uncle and friends, Joseph began hunting for Nazis in New York, it started with a simple botched burglary by a known Nazi sympathizer. Soon he was seeing conspiracies and spies everywhere.

On September the 8th, 1939 Joseph thought he broke the case, having pinpointed an area and time where suspected Nazi sympathizers where meeting. It was pouring rain, as it often can on the coast. He grabbed a trench coat as he opened his door, he was to meet John in half an hour at the docks. As he locked the door, trench coat still draped over his arm a shot rang out. There was a brief moment of pain in his chest as the bullet tore through his heart, his trench coat fell to the floor and then he slumped over as the world went dark.
Joseph died at the age of 25, never completing his work, never married, a man obsessed with his work and vengeance.

Notable Personality Traits (quirks): Hates Germans (blames them for his parents death), smoker, compulsive gambler, straight and narrow, loyal.

Inventory (what he was wearing as he left the house): White Shirt, olive and brown tweed vest, olive brown and red tweed suit Jacket, suspenders, brown slacks, holster with Colt M1911 & 2 spare magazines, packet of lucky strike cigarettes, tin of tobacco and rolling papers, Dorfman Pacific Co. tweed hat, heirloom gold pocket watch (left breast pocket), notepad and pen (suit jacket inside pocket), brown leather gloves (wearing), white socks, brown leather shoes.

Alright we can use this as in OOC thread. I admit, with the lack of sleep I have been getting I left out a few details I wanted to include. Ill list the most important few here.

Imagine a large dome. It is made of a thin layer of purple flame. Imagine one of those gelatin desserts, it looks like that. You are inside of it, and it looks like a well tended European garden. Outside of it is a thick grassy plain. On one side of the dome about a mile away from the dome you see a lush thicket of green trees. Obviously it is fairly easy to see through the flame.

The other major detail, is you each have some sort of strange tattoo on your right hand. It is the same color as the flame, and it forms strange other worldly shapes. You can't quite make out what they all are, but your quite certain they are all individual pictures that make up one big picture.
