Title: 2000 Pt Celestial Lions --->> Tactical Trinity
Post by: MRC on January 7, 2008, 01:16:52 PM
I just started playing with my new Celestial Lions and have been refining my list a bit here.

Traits:
-Purity Above All
-Heed the Wisdom of the Ancients
-Death before Dishonor
-Eye to Eye

My focus here is to devide up forces into "Combat Teams" that support one another. I have three primary elements right now:
1) ANVIL --> Fire Support units, made up of three Tac Squads and a Whirwind
2) HAMMER --> Mobile assault/counterassault units, made up of allied Grey Knight Terminators riding in a Land Raider Crusader and a Vindicator
3) FURNACE --> Drop pod strike units, made up of two Venerable Dreads and a shooty Command Squad

ANVIL's job is to form my tactical foundation, HAMMER's job is to either break the enemy firing line with CC assault or counter attack the enemy assault wave, depending on what type of army I am facing. Finally, FURNACE's job is to be a "shaping" element in the battlefield.... it can DS on enemy flanks and hammer their weak side armor, it can DS into enemy Firing Lanes and disrupt their shooting, it can even serve as an additional reaction force to support ANVIL and HAMMER against an all out enemy assault (i.e. Orks, Nids, etc.), or it can Drop in and sieze objectives in the last few turns of the game.

Here is the actual list broken out:

HQ (634)
-Command Squad (319)
  *Capt w/ PF, Plas Pist
*Vet Sgt w/ PF, Plas Pist
  *2 SM w/ Plas Guns
  *4 SM w/ Bolters
  *All w/ Tank Hunters
  * Drop Pod

-GK Terminators (315)
*Grand Master w/ Frag Gren, Targeter, Chainfist, NFW
*3 GK Terminators w/ SBs NFWs

EL (340)
(x2)-Ven Dread w/ EA, Tank Hunter, Drop Pod (170)

TR (510)
(x3)-Tac Squad (170)
*Vet Sgt w/ Apothecary, PF, BP
        *SM w/ LC
        *SM w/ Plasma Gun
        *3SM w/ Bolter

HS (516)
-LR Crusader w/ Smk (268)

-Vindicator w/ EA, Smk, PotMS (163)

-Whirlwind (85)

TOTAL:
2000 pts

Inf - 30
Veh - 7
Scoring - 10

I think it's a little schizophrenic.  I fear that the podding bits and GK's will cause some LOS trouble for your shooting elements, GK's are horrendously expensive, and the Land Raider might just be a big point sink.  It just doesn't seem like you do anything particular with a great deal of aptitude.

Presumably you're ok with a plasma pistol and gun because of the Apothecary upgrade.  Seems reasonable to me and might be one of the few ways to get Purity to pay for itself in every game.

Close to 600 points is wrapped up in the GK's and their Land Raider.  Seems like dropping them in favor of a Tac or Veteran squad with a Melta and powerfist in a Rhino or Razorback and an Assault squad would make a better hammer.

Infiltrate > Drop Pods, imo.  Switch Tank Hunters to Infiltrate on your command squad.

You don't need to pod those dreads.  Move them up with your landraider and use them as a mobile wall for you firing elements.

The variety of units in your heavy support choices is interesting.  I'd like to hear how it works out.

Oh, and I like your choice of chapters.  Celestial Lions get overlooked a lot, but if you've ever browsed Codex Armageddon, they were the biggest force of Space Marines there!  The Black Templars stole all the credit.

Are you playing them as being persecuted by the Inquisition?

Added to Catalog (link in footnotes)

Most lists can get by with 1/2 that points in HQ. It's intersting, i don't know if it would me my first choice. I think i'd at the very least take a recluisch instead of a captian. It's not like he's starting on the board to count for his LD 9. I'm not gonna dissuade u from anything else in regards to HQ, just make them earn their points back, eye gouge, kick the groin, hair pull orks do whatever it takes just earn the points back.

Elites: 2 venerable dreadnaught beaters. Clean, simple, effecient, vicious.

Troops: 3 shooty squads, Laz/plaz alright, apothecary a bit pricy but i'll agree with it. alright. I would like to say it be nice to have something here that could assault. If the Grey Knights don't work out you could always have a vetran infiltrate squad in there, or a tank hunter shooty squad. Blahh i'm getting a bit wishy washy here so i'll just end it.

Heavy: LRC it's not full enough for me to be worth the points (you don't have to agree that's just me i got 4000 points of SM and i don't think i'd take a LR or LRC if i was given it). Whirlwind i like. Vindicator it's alright it'll stay on the board for a bit at least, hopefully.  You got 2 nice tanks in here yet no rhino's and razorbacks instead you got drop pods. *shrugs*

Best of luck.
