Ok; List for my brother, created by two novices.  It doesn't have anything too fancy (AKA it's mostly the base list), because we're both utter newbies...heh.

3 Warriors (HQ)
3x Scything talons, 2x Deathspitters, 1x Venom Cannon
Extended Carapace
- 121pts

16 Termagaunts
Hive Node Mutant
- 122pts

16 Hormagaunts
Hive Node Mutant
- 170pts

16 Hormagaunts
Hive Node Mutant
- 170pts

10 Genestealers
- 160pts

Carnifex
Scything Talons, Venom Cannon
Extended Carapace
- 153pts

2 Biovores
Both w\ Poison Mines
- 104pts

Total - Exactly 1000pts
Models - 64

...Any advice on how to play it/fix it?

- Xander
Hey! I know!  Let's focus on building army lists, instead of silly custom titles and command structures, yeah?

From the days of the doctorines.
RIP-Goyder, Koonitz, and Jenkins.  Honour them.

Armies:
ORDER: Elysians 2k5, Armored battlegroup 2k5, Infantry Guard 2k, Dark Angles 4k5, Grey Knights 2k
DISORDER: Chaos 3k, Daemons 2k Dark Eldar 2k5, Nids 2k, Orks 2k5
I'm both proud and ashamed of those numbers...

I think that's a great list for 1000 pts.  It looks balanced enough to take on any opponent without any adjustment.  I see this list as following pretty typical Tyranid strategy of running the hormagaunts and termagaunts at a section of the enemy line.  Once you have the enemy in CC you move your genestealers in to wipe them out.  The other units in your force provide fire support, shooting up any units that you'd have trouble with in CC like skimmers.  The carnifex could perform a dual function being effective against heavy armor as well as fighting in CC.

Once your brother gets a handle of basic Tyranid strategies he can try out the biomorphs but I'd recommend just playing with this list for his first several games.
The Tyranids are the most rapidly evolving race in the galaxy.  They are super-predators destined to hunt all others to extinction.
