hey guys

i was just reading another thread on how crappy white dwarf has become.  And its true.  It was pointed out that we have no alternative source.  So, why not make our own?  Like a free online 40k magazine made by us, with articles (real ones) written by us, for 40k online.

It's just an idea, but post here if you're interested.  If we get enough people, maybe we could make this happen.

And....if this is a redundant, stupid, impossible idea, then feel free to post that here too.

So the question is: would anyone be interested in participating in a project to make a free online alternative to white dwarf for this site?

EDIT:
as this seems to be gathering interest, here is a list of what we need and who has already volunteered for what:

The numbers in brackets are the numbers of articles already submitted for that section.

Needed:
Gaming articles - tactics, gameplay etc.: Treg Pjwninaro Wuestenfux

Modelling articles - conversions, assemblies, terrain building etc.: Tyler The Blade, Chaos0Xomega, Greenstuff, Ashman, Maedrhos Rihadol  (1)

Painting articles - how tos, tutorials, techniques etc. : Rookyboy

Fiction items (or 1 long and a few short) - any fiction that you might write and feel should be included: Khemri Daemon, Lonewulf, Swiper, Arun, Greenstuff, Maedrhos Rihadol, Cossack formerly Lord Solar  (1)

Player's armies - featured armies from our members or your friends: Archite Balthraka

Feature articles - about anything 40k related: Swiper, ChaosToast, Andromidius (the art of sportsmanship) (1)

In depth battle report - good ones: Archite Balthraka, Lonewulf, Wuestenfux

Tips for newbies: Pathfinder
Experimental Rules: Swiper, Maedrhos Rihadol

DOW - Spawnofchaos89

Unspecified: Col. gravis, Agelmar, Battle Armour, Foxfire

Tell me if i missed any of you guys out  :)

Heres a few guidelines for writing the stuff.  Im no great writer, but these are what i feel should/should not be done:

1.  Articles should be relevant to 40k/tabletop/whatever you're writing about (duh)
2.  Don't write useless stuff.  If we already knew it, we dont need it in writing.
3.  Don't write anything that's similar to whats in WD.  Thats what we want to avoid :P
4.  For the love of crum, spell check  ;D  If you use MS word or any word processor, please use the spell check.  That'll save us a lot of time.
5.  I know not everyone here may speak english as their first language, but still try your best to keep grammar and sentence structure to a reasonable standard.
6.  Articles should be at least a page long.  This can be argued, but i dont think i've seen any articles in WD less than a page.
7.  Fiction writers, if you can get an illustration done for your story, all the better!
8.  Proof read your stuff.  Or get someone else to.
9.  Use headings and sub headings in longer articles
10.  Submit your articles in MS word file format.
11.  Make battle reports interesting.
12.  You can submit as many articles as you like.

I think the stupid White Dwarf should be didived into 3 magazines:

yup, you guessed it:

Warhammer 40 000 (60 - 80p.)

Warhammer Fantasy (50 - 70 P.)

The Lord Of The Rings (30 - 60P)

That is true, since the balance of the three is extremely well....imbalanced each month.  But would you be interested in joining a project to make an alternative?

I'll gladly lend a hand.  Doing real articles on modelling and collection armies would help out alot of new guys alot, rather then shoving huge amounts of models down their throats from the outset.

Oh, and some real life BatReps would be interesting as well.  Regular Mega Battle pictures, campaigns, scenerio ideas, short stories...

Mmm...:)

And every month (from the first issue) 1 army is VERY detailedly tactically described.

Example:

Issue 1: The Eldar (2 pages fluff, 6-8 pages tactics)

Say: Dire Avengers

Dire Avengers, being the 'Elite-Guardians, have a veriety of roles on the battlefield. They are the masters of close ranged firefights and can pack a punch in close combat, too. With a dedicated Wave Serpent Transport (Spiritstones and Shurikencannon upgrade), they can deal heavy damage against enemy infantry, especially those with a bad armour saves such as Orks and Dark Eldar...........etc .

with some pics and 1 mega poster of the Race.

Sth. like this:

Index (1 page)

Fluff & Artwork (3 pages)

This month: Eldar (Fluff, Tactics, Unit rundown, tactics vs. enemy armies, painting, Craftworlds etc. (20 pages)

___________________ ___________________ ___________________

Battlereports: (always 3; with pics and AT LEAST 4 pages each)

Space Marines vs. Orks

Tau vs. The Imperial Guard

Tyranids vs. Chaos

___________________ ___________________

8 pages of ads (randomly in the magazine) ALL GW DEDICATED

___________________ _______

Modelling, converting and painting terrain and minis for cities of death (16 pages)

_______________

New Releases (8-12 pages)

_____________

Scenarios (4-6 pages)

Total: approx. 70 - 85 pages, Warhammer 40,000 ONLY monthly issue.

 :) :D ;D

Im sure if we got enough people, we could pad it out to 70-80 pages per month.  But keep in mind this would probably be an online downloadable/viewable thing, so there would be limits.  Like posters probably wont be possible, but artwork fluff, reviews all the rest would.

To clarify this would be an online venture which should be freely available, with contributers each month from 40k online.  If we get enough contributers that is...

The Magazine MUST cost something and if MUST be accepted by GW and OFFICIAL. I'd say about 5 euro (6 USD)

I was thinking more an online thing to be shared amongst the 40k online community.  Free and available to 40K online every month.  Not sure GW would accept anything like this and if it's free, everyones happy.  If you want to publish a solid hard copy monthly magazine and make it official, i'm not sure this is the project for you.  But if you do, then my hat goes off to you.  You would be doing us all a great favour seeing White Dwarf is now about as informative on the hobby as this roll of toilet paper.

Why?  I would think it would be more difficult to receive GW's approval if money was made off it.

I wouldn't be willing to pay for anything.  Especially since so much free material is already available online.  Besides, as bad as WD has gotten, the Black Gobbo e-zine is pretty good, IMHO.

This wouldnt be a paid thing.  This would be a free online thing for the 40k community.  Right now i need people willing to work on/contribute to this.

Charging hard bar for it is asking for a world of pain from GW copyright lawyers.
But a free online fanzine? That could work.
I'd even be tempted to get off my sorry arse and contribute if I had anything interesting/useful to say.

Ok.

Make it free, with adverts - Wargaming Online for example, with a main focus on 40k, but other focuses on other games, more reviews and maybe get sponsors for it.

I'd be in - and GW would NEVER make it 'official' - I'd do some tactics, fluff, battle reports, alternative doctrines - whatever.
Its an even stranger day when you have a fat Games Workshop-Fanboy Ninja declare to end you for something you did for April Fools on Teh Interwebz.

It's a strange day in the world where I find myself agreeing more often than not with Swiper.  :D

man i'd love to help if i could at all,(hopefully more then i did at that TV staion what you didn't want cow in your veggie burger my bad). Yeah the idea is brillant and i'd love to help in any way

you'd have to offer something WD doesn't provide though even if its free if we give the same old stuff we won't atract to many people.

So it's an online free-zine then?

Okay, I'm in.

If there's anything you're not sure about the Eldar or the Black Templars, just let me know. Besides, I can write REALLY fluffy batreps and stories. ;)

I agree that a online free mag would be great. However, I think that 3 are better than one if we can find enough Fantasy and LOTR players.  I will help in whatever way I can.  However, I think that 70 pages is to much to get organized at first, so maybe do a 30 page trial first

I'd love to help. I'm not really experianced in gaming, but i can write fluff like there aint no tommorrow. Also slightly ok at conversions (see my siggy for examples)

I say we show WD who's boss! *cracks knuckles*

I'm in. I dont know what I can do, but I can try pretty much anything. I can usually provide some interesting mega battle stories, however pictures would not work well(since armies around here really suck painting/modelling wise, as do the tables). I can also do conversion and scenery stuff, as well as some painting(not so much though) as I am pretty decent at it.

Oh but you couldnt charge for it, otherwise GW would sue us, and I would demand a paycheck  ;)

Also, I think an actually published magazine would somehow break GW's copyright or whatever and get us into trouble, so it would have to be online.

How about 'The 40kO E-Zine'? Or maybe a joint production between Warseer and 40ko? They got some good talent on Warseer ripe for exploitation ::evilgrin::

A 'Reader's Armies' section would be nice as well.  A couple of good quality army shots, a few close ups and some words from the players.  Always a nice read (especially if they aren't paid up GW staff).
