"Cleanse and Purify" - help a confused newbie!
« on: March 1, 2005, 08:07:57 AM »
I'm new to 40K and only got the rules and the sm codex at the weekend, so if this is a dumb question I appologise in advance.

As I read the "clease and purify" trait, SM tactical squads with this trait can swap Lascannons and Missle Launchers for plasma, melta and flamer weapons. Does this mean that SM armies with tactical squads who dont have this trait can't field plasma. melta and flamer weapons in thier tactical squads? Which leaves them with Heavy bolters, Missile Launchers and Lascannons only. Is this right?

Thanks

Pipkin

Welcome to 40KO!

Normal marines without this trait can have these special weapons, exactly as detailed in the codex entry. That trait allows them to have these special weapons twice in each squad.

Normalls you can have one heavy weapon and one special weapon, e.g. missile launcher and a plasma gun. With this trait a squad could have e.g. two plasma guns or a melta and a plasma gun (or any other combination).

Also the second set of assault weapons cost the price of those they replaced i.e. a second Plasma Gun would be the price of a Lascannon.

Yes, unless your wanting to be fluffy or it really fits your play style that second plasma/melta/flamer is expensive.  Still, to be able to feild a tactical squad that can fire four plasma shots on the move can have it's advantages.

Adz-  the 2nd melta or plasma gun costs the same as a lascannon. It's not 20 pts.
I agree with Spiritbw, 4 shots from two plasma guns at rapid fire range (12'') can be devastating.

A drive-by flaming tactic is also very devastating against most infantry. Take two flamer-wielding marines and a veteran sergeant with a Bolter-Flamer for a nice three-template attack. Add a couple of bolters and stick them in a Rhino for the ultimate swarm-killing unit. Total cost for this unit: 249 points. Quite expensive, but really effective against low-AV troops and for flushing out troops in cover. (remember that template weapons negate cover saves)
