Title: Anyone familiar with GURPS...?
Post by: Kage2020 on March 4, 2002, 08:48:55 PM
Hey there.  Just wondering if anyone out there was familiar with the GURPS RPG?

After playing 1st ed. 40k those many years ago (my last WD was 142, IIRC) I have come back to the universe.  Why?  Well, to be honest I truly feel that it is one of the most interesting representations out there.  Thus, 13 years later I come back to the universe as a roleplayer.  My system of choice is GURPS, not because that it is in anyway superior (although I would argue that it has one of the best character generations sytems around) but because it is a 'universal' system and that it is well supported...

So what's the purpose of this thread?  Well, I'm interested in discussing - in appropriate forums - Eldar, and the other races, of the 40k universe as represented in the GURPS game.  Obviously it would help if there are people out there who are familiar with the system...

So, is there anyone out there?

Yes, but more as a rules reader than anything else.  If you have a favorite sub-genre, GURPS may have a sourcebook that cover it.  The writers are very knowledgable about their subject, and are good at descibing their worlds as a gaming environment.  Supposedly, they have scaled every thing, so that the players can accurately cross not just time but genres as well.  I am presently reading one of SJG's latest called Transhuman Space, that involves a possible future based on our current computer and bio-technologies, a hundred years in the future.  They have it listed as 'powered by GURPS', but with a little work the character may work in a standard (?) GURPS world.

Wow, I've posted about four threads thus far and this is the only response!  Many thanks... :D

So, that's one person familiar with the system so that I wouldn't have to explain every little detail...  I shall be less reticent in posting some of my quirkier ideas! ::)

Transhuman Space... I've only got the Playtest files for that, and not the final product.  It did, however, look rather interesting...

How much interest do yuo have in GURPS, I could answer a few more detailed questions.  Do you visit the Steve Jackson website?  Do you subscribe to their online magazine 'Pyramid'.  I do and can tell you abou those as well.

Well, GURPS is my system of choice now... I have a number of the various books including such things as Biotech, Compendium I and II, Cyberpunk, Imperial Rome, Fantasy Bestiary, Grimoire, Mage the Ascension, Magic, Mecha, Psionics, Robots, Space, Traveller, Traveller: Star Mercs, Vampire the Masquerade, Vampire Player Guide, Vehicles... erm, they're the ones that spring to mind.  So I kind of like the system! :D  It's not the best in the world, but it does what I need it to do.  (And, yes, I subscribe to Pyramid!)

You might be interested in the webpage information for my interpretation of the Rogue Trader universe (link to the left)... I take a bit more of a sci-fi approach, but am beginning to incorporate some more 'fantastical' elements (i.e. a type of 'sorcery' for powerful psionicists)...

Used to play GURPS with some frequency, but its been a while.  Started just with regular fantasy stuff, but as more supplements came out, we enjoyed the Horseclans stuff (got some whoppers to tell you about those games) and, most recently, we had a Black Ops campaign being run by a friend.  It was really cool, being placed in either areas we new intimately (like where we grew up) or that we had some detailed info on (topo maps, etc) that made it seem more realistic.  Of course, we were chasing aliens, so realism wasn't the number one priority, but it definitely made it fun.

Looks interesting.  I believe that Rogue Trader was to be the foundation of a RPG, but it turned into a miniatures game.  I have some interest in Inquisitor, since I was told that if you halved the scale, it would size up correctly to use the 28mm GW figs.  That might help to make a 40K RPG, with a wider range of characters.

That's what everyone thought when Rogue Trader[/i] was released.  Everything just smacked of "potential RPG" but nothing manifested.  The closest to come out of it was Necromunda and, more recently, Inquisitor.  Both can be used as potential inspiration but they are definitely not RPGs.  At best, they are detailed combat systems for an RPG... Or at least I would suggest so.

There is an unofficial 40k RPG utilising the WFRP system, but I generally wouldn't touch that system with a barge pole.  I know that some think it is brilliant, but perhaps too many bad experiences have coloured my opinion of the game...

Hence, the use of GURPS.  Again, not the best but there we go.  Take a look at the link... ;)  Tell me what you think! :D
