A question to the community
« on: November 19, 2002, 11:31:49 PM »
Hmm....serious question time:

What do you consider to be a good Mod? What qualities should he have? What would you want a Mod to be like?

When wrong, to be made right.
When right, to be kept right.

Generally should have the ability to consider things from an unbiased point of view, but when enforcing a rule must be steadfast and not be leanient to friends etc

Should treat other posters with respect, as posters would treat the mod with respect, and not undermine or act condescendingly.

Must be trust worthy and not abuse their power

Off the top of my head  ;D

The perfect mod would be as totally unlike you, Sandman as possible...  ;D

Seriously though, a mod should be fair. He should be able to spell and use correct grammar. He shouldn't be trigger happy (ie locking every second topic) and should know a lot about whatever forum he is moderating.

One last thing, If you're looking for a new mod, I recommend either Redtwo or Anargo.

well (IMO)

a good mod will treat all posters with respect,

they should be helpful to the posters (sorry guys, but alot of u skip on this one :-\)

While still being serious when laying down the law (rulz, wot eva  ::))

Fun is fun,
but sometimes when mods over use powers,
its just plain annoying.

Good mod: Lanoreal (think thats how ya spell it)

Not as good mod: TMP (no offence)

*of course i'm going to take offence!  >:(

Gee I feel I'm being judged ;D .

Anyway I consider a good mod to help people when they are needed, cleans up the board when it is needed and brings what he can to the forums.

On the mods abusing power thing I have not once abused my power (seeing as I have power over F&F and Non-40k ::)).

well,
i must admit that i havent seen  u abusing your power much (helmed horror)
but,
here's an example which i just happened to have a link to ;D -

http://www.eldaronline.com/community/index.php?board=9;action=display;threadid=19238;start=30

yep,
on that page i think you'll notice that every single post, other then one of mine, has being edited by a mod (other then the mods posts)

lookin at that i must have being on a high or something,
but anywho.

That is bad/abusing modding (and some being a jerk by me ::))

Impartiality , clarity , a sense of humour , and a stand-off attitude (not interfering with Modly powers all the time ) . All the Mods here seem like decent chaps , I've no complaints .

He/She should be unbias, uninvolved in any scenes where his/her power is expressed.

He/she should be able to express fairness and understanding too. I wonder how many moderators private message both sides of a feud before weighing up the evidence and casting judgement?

He/she should be both good willed and humerous, with a great understanding for when a joke ends, and immaturity begins

He/she should be able to detect sarcasm

Mind you I can sence a serious post about to start tumbling downhill.

A mod is always right.....*hrm*

A mod is a thing, that should be able to get a topic going. Write new and interesting stuff.....

But that was like....all of them.

A good Mod is involved in topics so we know their opinion, and doesn't just watch from on-high with an ever omnipotent hand.

And what was said before.

I must see what happens here. Just to see.

THE MIGHTY PIKACHU IS A GAY HOMOSEXUAL YELLOW LIGHTNING TAILED RAT!!!!! SHIM DOESN'T CARE ABOUT ANYTHING AS LONG AS SHIM CAN HAVE TOTAL POWER OVER THE EXPRESSION OF OTHERS IN POSTS!

THE SANDMAN IS A GAY HOMOSEXUAL ANNOYING BASTARD WHO IS PARANOID ABOUT EVERYTHING!!! HE ALWAYS WANTS TO KNOW WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF HIM BUT IS TOO AFRAID TO ASK AND NEVER JUST LEAVES US ALONE!!!

Let's see what happens.  ;D ;D
I BEG your pardon? First off, isn't being a Gay homosexual redundant? Second, too afraid to ask? Who created this topic anyway? And if I left you alone, I wouldn't be a Mod, now would I?

Now Questal.....was that an abuse of power? Hmm....I suppose so. But then again, you were being rather silly at the time yourself. In fact, I think it was your post that originally prompted me into doing so.

Ah well, it was all in good fun. From my point of view, it was damned funny. Sure beats deleting all those posts, eh?

Why, this is a board about 40K, not about grammar or spelling.

I don't agree completely, mods have their own opinions, but they are also the voice of the community. This means that it should be clear to see the difference between the opinion of the mod himself and the opinion of EO.

You just proved my point.
I have yet to show the world my power....

The day will come when Falrapax returns
With all his deadly kin
And to avoid his great concerns
Would lead us all to sin

Remembrance of his final glory
In final waking hour
Recounts the tale of his story
And all his waking power

Both demon and man was he,
A breed of forgotten shame
Yet all demon would soon he would be
And all would know his name

Actually, I consider good grammar to be a very important quality of a Mod.

People just can't take a guy seriously who misspells every 2nd word or so.

*Ahem*

I agree with most of the things said here. Grammar is important. But then again I put "me and my friend" in my last post. I find that to be ironic. A little too ironic. Dontcha think?

A good mod should turn a blind eye to copyright infringements.   8)

Personally, I think a good moderator is someone who relates to the community and who puts a good effort into what they do.

I don't think we can really say that a good mod should be able to spell, or must be sweet and fluffy, (although these are great bonuses =)... but as long as the mod tries and does their job, that's a good foundation to a good moderator.

Participation, communication, and mutual respect is key I think.

Alas, we're having a discussion as to what we think is important in a moderator as we are doing some changes on EO to help improve the community.  We want to know what you all think is necessary in choosing our moderators.

Just a fan of this awesome site.

It'z da Big Boss!  Dance for da Boss, dance! (Several grots dance to appease the mighty avatar of Gork and Mork, persuaded by the bolter shells Warboss Zithog fires at their feet)
What foes are we to meet in battle that we have not vanquished in the shadows of the human soul? What Daemons scream that have not cried to us from dark places of the mind?  What fear have we of death who know there is imortality in the great and noble deeds of men?

For Every battle honour, a thousand heroes die alone, unsung and unremembered.

The Mutant bears his heresy on the outside, the Traitor hides it in his Soul.

The rewards of tolerance are treachery and betrayal.
