you dont need MC to deal with tanks.

i watched a nids army go against ms and totally overwhelm them.

they had a broodlord, stealers, gaunts, warriors, zoans  and raveners. no tyrant or MC.

rending can still take tanks out with ease.
legion of sickness
lord of misery
after my death I rise in immortality
unleashing the horror my words are infected
feast on my rot
I am resurrected

resurrection of the rotten
resurrection of the dead

Not with ease.  With luck.

Every 6th attack that hits a tank has the same potential power of a normal MC's attack.  Without regarding higher strength.

But yes, rending can be useful in taking tanks if you have enough.  Use a flyrant or zoanthopes, though, if you have them.

It would be good if someone (I'm looking at you Yuenglingdragon and Benandorf) could update this. I'd do it myself but I'm currently in China with limited internet, no access to my Tyranid Codex and a flooded apartment to deal with/sponge up

They may not be the ones doing it, just to point out. I only mentioned them because they are the main contributors to the board these days (there was a time when it was me, but not so much now I have so many responsibilities. You never know though, I may find the time on my return to the West)

I'm totally new to nids and I just got the huge new brood box. But I was wondering what is the optimum size for a termagaunt brood. I have 34 of the little guys and I gave them endless swarm. With the plan being to use them as screening units for the hormagaunts and once they are wiped out respawn and claim the objectives on my side. But what is the best size for a brood? Too small and they will be wiped out too quickly and no longer protect the others too big and the enemy can blow up a chunk of them and shoot past them ignoring the last ~2 in the squad.

Without Number, which I'm guessing is the upgrade you meant, is generally considered pretty useless.

But in answer to your question, nothing smaller than 16 in my experience. I run 20 because I find that that's how many you need to hit anything in any real numbers with fleshborers

Really? Why is that?

Couple of reasons. First of all, even with the cheaper available set-up for your gaunts it's going to push them up to 8 points a model, which is pretty expensive considering it gives them no improvement in survivability or killing power.

Second of all, the renewed gaunt unit will come on from your table edge, most likely after the third turn, at which point it will probably be too late for them to do anything to justify the points you spent on the upgrade.

Understandable.  But my thinking is with the whole army thowing itself at the enemy even if it has only 2 turns it could still be good to have a full strength scoring unit in the last minutes of the game to secure objectives that remain on my side with no units loitering about.

The size of your units is immaterial in relation to whether they are scoring or not. You could have started with 32 gaunts and have only one left and it would still be scoring.
