Lumbering Behemoth
« on: January 7, 2010, 12:37:10 PM »
With the Lumbering Behemoth special rule on Leman Russ tanks, would a stationary Leman Russ be able to fire it's ordinance, sponson, front and pintle weapon?

Yes it would.  A stationary Russ with tri HB's and heavy stubber is a hoard armies worst nightmare at range for that very reason.

If it moves, it gets to shoot the BC, one main weapon, and the stubber.

So the BC on a moving Russ doesn't really count as the one main weapon it fires? Woah, I totally haven't been playing right...

That's pretty much how it's noted in the codex.  Ignore it when working out what you can shoot, and then add it on.  Of course, weapon destroyed, stuns and shaken can disable it as usual.

Can I ask, how have you been playing it?

I just counted the ordnance weapon as a main weapon, so, not firing sponson or front weapons when it moves.

Well, now you know.  The Russ has just gotten a whole lot better for you now! ;)

In the same vain, the Demolisher with plasma cannon sponsons, though hidously expensive, gives MEQ's very bad dreams at night.  Unless they have the sense to stay away from it. :P

ya this rule is just excellent! Russ's get feared.
I frequently use an executioner with plasma sponsons. very expensive but its quite good at making a mess outa anything.
When not moving it gets 5 plasma blasts and a hull weapon.
When moving it gets 4 plamsa blasts
 = deadly all the time.

Y would a moving one get only 4 blasts? Each sponson counts as its own weapon?

You can only fire one sponson while moving. (offensive weapon)

Each sponson is a separate weapon. This means that a pair of sponsons will count as two weapons, and each of these will count as a main weapon (as all russ sponsons are too strong to be defensive).

So, with this in mind a demolisher with heavy Bolter sponsons and a heavy bolter hull weapon will have 4 main weapons in total. On the move a russ can fire one main weapon (as any tank can) but it's special rule also allows the turret to fire in addition.

The executioner is great because it's turret weapon gets multple shots so it's three added to a single sponson means you will always be getting at least four shots. Once the enemy destroys your main gun it becomes far less effective as you can then only fire the one plasma, though by this stage you can just remain stationary to at least punch out two templates.

when I played nids yesterday, I used hull mounted heavy bolter and heavy bolter sponsons, and a normal russ... It was a good day.

Overall be prepared for your friends to shout cheese at you, and beware the lone spesh mareenz player. They will target your russ first turn :(

I can't for the life of me see how using a unit in the exact way that the writers of the codex clearly intended it to be used could ever be considered cheesy.

Pretty much.

I like to set my Russ up with a Heavy Stubber and Lascannon.  Every turn I'm firing everything on the bad boy, which works great against infantry, since BC then Lascannon then Stubber means I'm going to kill something.  Same deal against vehicles, just without the Stubber.  Oh, my Lascannon didn't get the job done?  KA-BOOM!  Let's see what a BC can do.

It has worked really well so far, and with the Russ's front armor means it can take a beating unless I get flanked, podded or do something stupid. ;D

Nuts i never clicked in before that a heavy stubber is a defensive weapon.
Time to adapt my russes and pay some more points.

Well, the Stubbers AP is a bit of a pain in the butt, but with two weapons that have good AP, the LC and BC, it works out.  Weight of fire tends to to the trick anyway, and is a Guard staple.

In fact, the tri-bolter with stubber Standard Russ puts out 12 shots and a BC template. That will put the hurt on nearly any infranty above Terminator/Nob level for a decent cost.

Which is useful if the BC gets blown off, but to fire all that you need to sit still.

And a sitting tank, is a dead tank.  There is Always something that will get into CC, and since our back armor sucks move then this years adult film awardee, I don't see the point in helping the enemy if I can avoid it.

The neat thing though as your stubber is a defensive weapon, you can get another three shots while moving, which means you can fire your BC, your bolter and your stubber. This basically doubles your none template fire power.
