Making your first posts, some guidelines
« on: March 31, 2003, 03:21:11 PM »
Hello all,

First of all, welcome to 40K Online! It’s always good to see new (and old) people on the site.
Whether you are new to this community or new to the world of Warhammer 40K, I think it’s important that when you start participating in a community like this, that you know the rules and regulations of the community. Nothing could be more frustrating than unknowingly breaking rules in a community of which you want to become a proud member. So take a little time and read the following thread: 40k Online Rules and Netiquette. This gives you a good idea of what you can/cannot do here. Also, each of the boards has a number of sticky posts, which are usually good to check out before posting on a new board.

Also, I have a few guidelines for making your first posts here, as I’ve seen a few posts, which were difficult to read, used horrible (or no) layout, didn’t contain information at all, and even some which have all of the above (Not that many tough, but it never hurts to help ;)).

The first thing people will see when they read your post is the layout. If the post gets a bit long, make sure you use paragraphs where needed. Also, watch out how you use capitals. Use the normal standard for this, as using no capitals makes the tekst look boring, while too much can make you appear to be shouting (WOULD YOU LIKE TO READ A POST COMPLETELY LIKE THIS?).

We all understand that you are eager to make your posts here, and we all know that you are very enthousiastic about the game, about eldar, or about anything else. However, keep in mind that people are going to read your post, and if you want them to make good replies, you’ll have to make a good post. Make sure you know what you want to say/ask when posting your first post. Don’t start firing questions like there is no tomorrow (because there is, and I've seen it :D), but make good finished sentences, which clearly state which information you wish to hear/tell.

A minor detail, which can greatly enhance the readability of your post, is when you pay a little attention to how you write words. We will all understand what you mean with scorpiens but it does take more time to understand the entire post. Try to use correct spelling so that everyone can easily understand what you say. If your English is a bit lacking for any reason, don’t worry too much about it. As long as you are willing to put some effort into making a fine post, all can (and will) be forgiven.

If you already have some experience with the game, and want to voice your opinion on certain things, make sure you keep polite. In some cases people use too many swear words when voicing their dislike of something. A far better alternative would be to simply use words like “dislike”,  “don’t want to use”, and “I don’t like”. In the ideal situation you can write your arguments for your opinion. This leaves room for others to counter your opinion with arguments, and maybe you can get a good discussion going :).

This may all be a bit vague, therefor I’m going to make up an example which is exactly how your post should not look like:

Quote
NEW TO ELDAR, NEED HELP QUICK!!

hi, i’m new to da elder and cos i don’t know yet wot iz good i want to ask you ppl wot you think that would be good. i have bought a avator cos i think hes powerful but i don’t know for sure, so is he any good? also i dunno wot to get next because my friends plays mariens and orcs and chaos and i was thinking of rangars but i don’t know if rangars are any good, or should i take dire avngers? I don’t want guardiens as i HATE GARDIENS and i don’t like the models THEY SUCK besides THEY ARE WEAK and i want a powerful force. should i take wav serpants and banshes cos my friends play mariens and power weps are good against mariens and I think lots of starcannons 2 because ive heard that they are awesme against marines and good enough against orks. thanks for any help! ::) :P ;D :o ;) :D ::) 8)

Now this is a bit extreme, but I think that it clearly shows why it can be useful to spend a little more time thinking about what and how you rae going to post.

Well, I hope this helps, happy gaming!

Greetings fellow Eldar (or whatever other race you may be)!

I like these guidelines Farseer Ulthrion, good points.  Aspirations of becoming a moderator I think.  Try to practice what you preach though regarding spellings.  We can (and do) forgive you though!   :)

Also I like the point made by jasper – too many topics are repeated.  If there is already a topic called, for instance, ‘Advantages of Jetbikes’, then a new topic called ‘Are Jetbikes any Good?’ would probably not be needed.

As for my own advice to new posters, here it is – never ever, ever ever ever, ever ever…EVER… post ‘in character’.  There are some real killjoys out there who will take you down at a moments notice.  But hey, I don’t listen to my own advice so you shouldn’t either - I’m just warning what will happen.  Enjoy, have fun and long live the ‘in-character’ posters!

Hello there! Why didn't anyone tell me this place existed? A sight devoted entirely to Eldar! I've been a player of 40k for a couple of years now and there's no other army I could ever think to play.
        The only reason I found this place is because I'm actually doing a University assignment where I have to join an online community. I'm really glad I found this site. I was overwhelmed by the amount of stuff here. The artwork, stories/fluff, I can see I'm going to be spending too much time here.
          Anyway. If you all out there get this, reply, I'd love to chat about Eldar, plus I need heaps of transricpts to do my assigment. Look forward to hearing from ya.

oh, by the way, my name's Alaric, and I play Eldar themed on Ulthwe, and I am a student at the University at Waikato.
How can we hope to learn anything, if we destroy everything we don't understand. Stop destroying, for there is wisdom in this world to be found in amounts that we cannot comprehend with a warmongers state of mind.

Forum Coding
« Reply #10 on: May 25, 2003, 09:13:20 PM »
I am making this tutorial to benefit the newbies who have just joined and are wondering how those little buttons work.

When i first joined EO's excellant community i very rarely used the coding buttons, such as inserting urls, pictures, changing font, adding text effects etc
So here is GoldFish's very own guide to Coding on EO forums

Note Before we begin, i will include dots in the coding scripts to stop it working untill i do a finished example eg; [.url][./url] would work if it didnt have the dots (.)in.

Firstly lets start with basics
Adding a link to a website;
   Find the site you want to link to, go to the address bar and copy the address (cntrl+C) then start up the New Thread or Post Reply and press the 'Insert Hyperlink' button or alternatively type [.url][./url]  Then select inbetween the two boxes and paste (cntrl+V) the adress in.  eg; [.url]www.eldaronline.com[./url]
without the dots it will appear as a link which you can click, like this
www.eldaronline.com

Inserting a Picture;
         NOTE: the image hoster your are using MUST allow 'remote linking' for this to work!
   Find the direct url to your image, by right clicking the image and selecting properties, copy the Address. Click the insert image button, or type [.img][./img]
Then, like the url, paste the address to the image in between the [.img][./img] like so [.img]http://www.40k.ca/community/YaBBImages/img.gif[./img]
It should come out like so

Inserting Email Links;
  Not commonly used but can be helpful occasionally.
  Click the insert email button and this should come up [.email][./email] SImply insert a correct email address in between them like so [.email]team_fish@hotmail.com[./email] and it will come out like this team_fish@hotmail.com

Inserting Text Effects;
  These can make points stand out, but dont use them all the time, as it gets very annoying.
The symbols are pretty straight forward,
Bold;
Makes text bold, this will come up, [.b][./b], type your message in between and it become bold Bold!
Italics;
Makes writing become italic, this will come up, [.i][./i], put your message in between and you have Italic writing!
Underline;
Underlines writing, [.u][./u] will appear, put you message in between and you have underlined text!
StrikeThroughs;
Puts a line through writing like This, you know the drill by now, click the button, this appears [.s][./s] then insert the text to be crossed out in the middle.
Glowing!;
   Creates a glowing effect around your text. Clicking the button makes this appear,[.glow=red,2,300][./glow], put the text in the middle and hey presto glowing text! You can fissle about with the colours and amount to create different glows.
Shadowing; Press the button, or type [.shadow=red,left][./shadow] and insert text in the middle to get a red shadow effect, again you can toggle the colour and direction of the shadow once you experiment.
Changing Font Size;
  You can use this button and this should appear [.size=2][./size] insert you text in the middle you want to become Bigger Toggle the size= number to increase and decrease the size.

Enough with the text!
Last but not least,
Bullet Points (list);
click the button and this should appear
[.list][.*][.*][.*][./list]
Looks confusing compared to the others?  Its actually simple, just type the text for the bullet point after the [.*], eg [.*]Chocolate Ice cream.  You can insert more bullet points by just typing [.*] before [./list]
eg;
  • Chocolate Ice cream
  • Strawberry Ice cream
  • Banana Ice Cream
  • Vanilla Ice cream
That concludes my tutorial on how to use the buttons to create effects in your posts.

I hope this helped someone, somewhere.

Happy posting!

Oh BTW:  You can use the all of the buttons together to create big fancy effects like so
Made By GoldFish!

BTW II:  I have not included some buttons like the table or teletype for one simple reason, i dont know how they work or what they do.  It is the reason i created this tutorial, because i couldn't find one elsewhere.

BTW III: I started this at 1:20 am, so please dont mind any mistakes.

Cheers guys - the helpful How To HTML up your post with groovy stuff is damn useful. think I'll be using that when I've more time to digest it all.

OK, as you've probably already guessed I'm a NOOB to this site. Got used to several others for different systems (notably dumpshock.com) so I'm aware of the Netiquette. Anyhoo, I've just got back into Warty Thou after a prolonged absence (used to play 1st Ed Rogue Trader & Adeptus Titanicus/Space Marine) and am slowly gearing up my Eldar forces. The EoT campaign has nicely landed on my doorstep in time for me to practice the 3rd Ed rules too, so you'll catch me over on that board also as the action hots up.

Righty Ho chappies, time to toddle off and scan the place over. Toodleloo!

Ok here is part 2 of the Coding guide by GoldFish
Some more stuff, although no table, i still cant figure that one.
Note Before we begin, i will include dots in the coding scripts to stop it working untill i do a finished example eg; [.url][./url] would work if it didnt have the dots (.)in.
Let us Begin
Advanced Url; Thanks Gemini!
Ok to make your url look more professional like Eldaronline  Click the url button then when the [.url][./url] come up, instead of just typing the text in the middle, put an = sign next to the the first url code, eg; [.url=]  Then enter in the websites url your linkin to (after the =, before the ]) Then in between the 2 url boxes, enter the text you want to appear  eg;[.url=www.eldaronline.com]Eldaronline[./url]  is how i did the one above.
Horizontal Rule;
Click the button and this should come up [.hr]  that is all you need to do, the rule splits up the message into different sections, especially good for long posts. Here it is...
Sub and Super Script;
Click the appropriate button for super script and for sub script.  [.sup][./sup] will come up for super script and [.sub][./sub] will come up for sub script, enter the text you want to add the effects to inbetween.  These make the text move to the top or bottom of the line, so Super script moves to the top and sub script moves to the bottom.
Teletyping;
Click the button.  [.tt][./tt] should appear, enter the text you want modifying in between.  Quite simply this makes your text appear as if it were made on a typewriter, eg typewriter text
Text Alignments
Very simple really, anyone who uses microsoft word should have no trouble with these.
Align Left
Does what it says on the tin, click the button and [.left][./left] should appear.  Enter your message in the middle and all your text will be aligned to the left.
Align Right

clicking the button will bring up [.right][./right] Enter your text in the middle and it will be aligned to the right, like this section
Centered
Clicking the button and entering you text in between the [.center][./center] will make all your text align to the center, like this section

And so concludes part 2 of the guide to the usage of code on this forum.  I would add flash and table but
1; i cant figure the table
2; i dont have any flash to use

Anyways, hope you enjoyed

Thanks again Gemini!

It can also be very helpfull to use ctrl C and ctrl V if you want to use the name of one of the EO members. Some of those names are difficult to write and it always annoys me when my name is spelled wrong: copy and paste = the easy solution.

Hello all,

And so concludes part 2 of the guide to the usage of code on this forum.  I would add flash and table but
1; i cant figure the table
2; i dont have any flash to use

I can't help with the second one, but I think that the tables aren't that different from the way they are used in HTML, so I'll have a try at them:

Tables: basics
First, you'll need to understand how a table is built. For each table, you'll need the beginning and ending YABBC-tag. You can use for this. It will print the following:
Code: [Select]
[table][/table]
The first tag (i.e. a tag is a part between '[' and ']', such as [/b]) is the start of the table, and the second tag is the end of the table. Everything that you want to put in the table should be between these two tags.

With the table tags alone, you don't have a complete table yet. You'll need to decide how many rows and how many columns you want.
I'll try to explain it using an example. Let's say that you want to make a table with a short description for each eldar aspect warrior. Knowing that there are 8 aspect warriors, you'll need 8 table rows. this means that we'll have to add 8 rows to the table.
Using the button, you'll print the following code:
Code: [Select]
[tr][/tr]This alone doesn't mean anything, so you'll have to place them between the table tags, like this:
Code: [Select]
[table][tr][/tr][/table]Finally, this is only one table row, and we needed 8 of them. The tags for the various table rows are placed next to eachother, like this:
Code: [Select]
[table][tr][/tr][tr][/tr][tr][/tr][tr][/tr][tr][/tr][tr][/tr][tr][/tr][tr][/tr][/table]As you see, this is very chaotic, so it's best to add a good layout, something like this:
Code: [Select]
[table]
[tr][/tr]
[tr][/tr]
[tr][/tr]
[tr][/tr]
[tr][/tr]
[tr][/tr]
[tr][/tr]
[tr][/tr]
[/table]

Now we have a table, and we have 8 rows in it. However, we still need to add columns. Each row must have the same number of columns, and in our example, we'll need 2 of them  (one for the name of the aspect, and one for the description). The button is for making columns. It prints:
Code: [Select]
[td][/td]Ín our example, we'll need 2 columns, so we use:
Code: [Select]
[td][/td][td][/td]However, we still need to place this in our original table. This piece of code needs to be placed between each of the table row tags, like this:
Code: [Select]
[table]
[tr][td][/td][td][/td][/tr]
[tr][td][/td][td][/td][/tr]
[tr][td][/td][td][/td][/tr]
[tr][td][/td][td][/td][/tr]
[tr][td][/td][td][/td][/tr]
[tr][td][/td][td][/td][/tr]
[tr][td][/td][td][/td][/tr]
[tr][td][/td][td][/td][/tr]
[/table]

Again, a better layout would be required if the table gets too chaotic:
EDIT: Don't put enters between the tr-tags, as this will change the layout of the table in strange ways.

Code: [Select]
[table]
[tr]
[td][/td]
[td][/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td][/td]
[td][/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td][/td]
[td][/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td][/td]
[td][/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td][/td]
[td][/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td][/td]
[td][/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td][/td]
[td][/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td][/td]
[td][/td]
[/tr]
[/table]

The actual text you want to have in the table should be written between the table data tags (i.e. [.td] and [./td]). Each space in table is called a cell, or table cell.
You should read the table data tags from left to right, top to bottom. This means that the first td-tag you see is for the top-left cell. The next td-tag will be of the cell just to the right of the previous one. If you see a tr-tag, then it's like pressing 'enter' on your keyboard. The next cell will  be one line (or row in the case of tables) below the previous one, and it starts agains at the left.

Now, an example can say more than 20 lines of text, so we'll continue to fill our table with the aspect warriors, and their descriptions.
The first aspect warrior will be the warp spider. The description will be that it's a warp-travelling, heavily armoured aspect skilled at taking out massed infantry.

We look at the first table-row of our table, and see:
Code: [Select]
[tr]
[td]
[/td]
[td]
[/td]
[/tr]

The first td-tag we see is the leftmost cell in the table. This is where we want to have the name of the aspect. So, we'll put "Warp Spider" there. The second tr-tag is for the cell just right of the previous one (with the aspect's name in it). This is where we want to have the description of the warp spider, so we'll write "A warp-travelling, heavily armoured aspect skilled at taking out massed infantry".

The result is the following code:
Code: [Select]
[tr]
[td]Warp Spider[/td]
[td]A warp-travelling, heavily armoured aspect skilled at taking out massed infantry[/td]
[/tr]

The entire table now looks like this:

Code: [Select]
[table]
[tr]
[td]Warp Spider[/td]
[td]A warp-travelling, heavily armoured aspect skilled at taking out massed infantry[/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td][/td]
[td][/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td][/td]
[td][/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td][/td]
[td][/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td][/td]
[td][/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td][/td]
[td][/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td][/td]
[td][/td]
[/tr]
[tr]
[td][/td]
[td][/td]
[/tr]
[/table]

In the same way we write the text for the other aspect warriors, giving us the following code:

Code: [Select]
[table]
[tr]
[td]Warp Spider[/td]
[td]A warp-travelling, heavily armoured aspect skilled at taking out massed infantry[/td]
[/tr]
