Just starting out Eldar (500)
« on: July 19, 2016, 05:16:19 AM »
Hi all,

Allow me to welcome myself into your community.

As the subject suggests I have just started out with Eldar, after playing for 3 years with Tyranids.  My opponent mostly plays Necrons, and outside of lucky objective games, he often toasts me.  He doesn't want to change from Necrons (why change a winning team) but we have both found that our games have been somewhat lacklustre.

So I have decided to start collecting Eldar and am working towards my first 500 point list.  We will mostly play 500 point games as I will ned to learn the new army, and often bigger battles can really confuse a new player to an army.

So I have the following (I know it goes slightly over 500 points, but we often ignore 30 points over and try and balance the armies) my question is, would this make for a good list for our first game, or where should I go next?

1x Farseer on Jetbike (option of a 2nd one, but that would push my points too far over)
6x Windrunners on Jetbikes (to split in to 2 teams of 3)
2x Fire Prisms

Hey Rinny welcome to the forums, and welcome to the Eldar army as well. Yeah Tyranids vs Necrons is certainly a challenge. The Necrons are certainly one of the best armies out there and the Bugs are very challenging to play. I'm sure you'll find your Eldar to give the Necrons a very stiff challenge.

As for your 500pt force I think you are off to a great start. Both the Farseer, 2x3 Jetbikes (with the scatter lasers I presume) are an excellent core to your army. I only run 3x3 Jetbikes so you'll soon be able to branch off into other directions.

The Prisms are hit and miss but are a solid choice for a small force. You'll probably find that as you scale up in points, they aren't as effective as you'd like but in smaller points games they'll do well and strangely enough in very large points games like Apocalypse and whatnot where you'll have points for niche specialist vehicles and units they'll do very well also. The Farseer should make them more reliable when you really need them to land those all important hits. You may even want to squadron them so your Farseer can guide both at the same time.

As you scale up and you may want to add some combat like a unit of Striking Scorpions as close-combat is a great tool against Necrons. Getting them to fail leadership after losing combat and sweeping advancing on them is a great way to circumvent Reanimation Protocols.

Anyway Rinny. I think you are off to a very good start with your choices. Good luck and let us know how your games go!

I have to agree with Cav here, Nids aren't in a good place at the moment, unless you go for the cookie cutter builds with multiple flyrants and every monstrous creature with as many brainleech wormed devourers as possible.

so yes, the jetbike squads are probably one of the strongest troop choices of the eldar at the moment, so you can't go wrong there, and the Farseer is a staple for a reason. Do you have any idea what kind of force you're thinking of building? Have any theme in mind, or going for an all-round, balanced army?

You know 3 more jetbikes and a vyper will yield you a Windrunner Host already while the 2 prisms adds as another formation for you.

The Eldar start packs are 1 x fireprism, 3 windriders and 1 Farseer on Jetbike is atually a good starter set, they sell here for a significant saving over buying those unit seperately, so grabbing two of those is a nice way to start.

Cav is right bout the fireprisms being solid options for low point games. I magnatised mine so I can swap them over to nightspinners, which I've found to be more useful in large point games, but it really depends on your play style.

Windriders are the go to troop for Eldar right now, so no going wrong there. You can get away with small N50 magnets on these guys to swap there guns over instead of using the clips.

Glad, to see this post here. I have the first game of an escalation league tonight (300 points) and our next game is going to be 500 points and this is the same list I was looking at running, due to the fact that all the models you need will be in the Start Collecting box.

Only difference is my opponents. I won't be facing any Necrons but just about everything else (Tau, Orks, SWs, Chaos, and a couple other unknowns) So I'm looking at an all comers list. Is this a powerful all around list? Would it be better to drop one of the Fire Prisms in favour of more jetbikes?

I'm hoping to have a final list (2000 points) consisting of my favourite visual units, Wraiths and Jetbikes.
