Obviously anything by Pantera is the ideal 40k soundtrack

I can imagine War Nerve blasting during the siege of Terra.

Lighten up while you still can,
Don't even try to understand,
Just find a place to make your stand,
And take it easy

I think Space Marines are content with a constant stream of tactical chatter as their audio choice.

It's also probably a safe bet that none of our current music has survived into the 41st Millennium :)

Gregorian chants for Space Marines. Much the same for all Imperial religious services. Marching songs for IG, and probably improvised soldier/folk/drinking songs for around the campfire (or MkIII Plasma Charged Space Heater). "Popular" music would probably vary per planet and culture.

As for a 40K "soundtrack", it's a toss-up between a hefty, bombastic classical score that would make John Williams wet himself, or a thick and fast metal score.
Yay, we made it!!!!
First Poland and now the rest of the world Mhuahahahahahahahah aha!!!

Or drum and base.

Personally I find rap good music (listen to it when I went paintballing/quasar whatever), fast drum and base, or rock.
Its an even stranger day when you have a fat Games Workshop-Fanboy Ninja declare to end you for something you did for April Fools on Teh Interwebz.

It's a strange day in the world where I find myself agreeing more often than not with Swiper.  :D

Only 38,0000 years left to go, then.

For my Guard, something angry. That, or a soundtrack of birds singing and crickets chirping to cover footsteps and whispered orders of my infiltrating Light Infantry.

*Twig Snapping*
Marine One: Brother, do you hear something?
*Cheep Cheep, Cheep Cheep*
Marine Two: Only crickets, Brother Sergeant.
*Freeeem*
Marine One: That sounded like a Lascannon carried by a two man team narrowly missing my face at a poor BS of 3.
*Cheep Cheep, Cheep Cheep*
Marine Two: Couldn't possibly have been, sir, crickets cannot carry Lascannons.
*Booooommmmm!*
Marine One: Quite right. However, it appears our Predator has spontaneously exploded.

Heres what I got:

Imperial Armies: Angry music, such as Thrash Metal, or Holy sounding/Classical music

Chaos: Thrash metal or, for some reason, I think that Rapcore fits Chaos well

Tau: I don't know, for Tau, sorry.

Necons: Classical music with a heavy, ponderous feel

Eldar: I am not sure what its called, but there is a very distinct brand of Arabic/Islamic music that revolves around a series of long, low, moans. I think it fits the Eldar well. If you have seen the film Black Hawk Down you know what I am talking about.

Dark Eldar: For some reason, I think a very fast punk, possibly with a rap overlay, fits the True Kin well. Mindless Self Indulgence I think, would be good.

Tyranids: The sounds of screaming and insectoid screeches are all the music you need.  8) 8) 8)

Orks: Country Music. I think that the idea of Orks just destroying everything to a country soundtrack is funny.

What, no bluegrass? I so see Orks going for bluegrass over country, much more frantic and unorganized sounding.

Yea, Bluegrass could definitely work as well.

Also, I have it for the Tau: Club music! That one repeating beat over and over again: Unce Unce Unce Unce Unce Unce Unce!
