Marutainian 97th Infantry Regiment + 98th Amroured Company

Marutainia

Marutainia is near the furthest north eastern corner of imperial space. It has a temprate climate with tundra regions near the poles, and tropical forests near the equator. There are very few mountain ranges on the planet, however there are many rivers. There are also two large deserts, one in the center of each continent, the rest of the land exept for a few spots is all temrate grassland. The two large continents are surrounded by a giant sea. In the eastern hemisphere between the two continents there are many fractured islands, rock smaples from these islands and from the continents show them to be almost exactly the same, which leads many scholars to belive that the two continents were once one and some great cataclysm separated them.

History

It was orginally discovered by exploritors just before the Age of Apostasy. During the age of Apostasy it was colonized by members of the Confederation of Light looking for a safe hideout. After the Age of Apostasy it was further colonized and its temprate climes with long growing seasons and short winters eventually led to a great crop trade system emerging as its chief export. Because of the amount of rivers many croppers turned to cotton which also led to a booming textile industry (all Marutainian soldiers are given a uniform milled on their home planet, and the destruction of one is seen as bieng as bad as losing a leg). The only other things the Marutainians export are Adamatium ore (mined in the three mountain ranges), Seafoods (thier lobster is renowned all around the sector), and fighting men.

Military

The first armed regiment founded in Marutainia was the Emperors Divine 1st Marutainian PDF. These were men were recruited to protect the Confederation of Light's stronghold during the Age of Apostasy. It was originally founded with 500 men, it still stands today to protect the temple and stronghold erected there during the Age of Apsostasy. It is the highest honor for a man in the Marutainian regiments to be asked to join their numbers. Other then the first Marutania has nine other PDF regiments the 2nd (Hive Helpers), 3rd (Polar Protectors), 4th (Forest Fighters), 5th (Desert Destroyers), 6th and 7th (Coast Gaurd), and the,8th,9th, and 10th (Plain Janes). The Marutainians have 100 active Infantry and Armoured companies in total. From the 53rd Xenos Terror to the 81st Armoured Core.

The 97th + 98th

Part of four regiments newly founded in the past 100 years, They almost always fight with the 98th Armoured Company for heavy support. Like all the Marutainian regiments they shy away from formalities and bareley ever salute a sienior officer (Makes them a target in the field). They are taught how to make advantage of almost any terrain and how to live off of it in case of emergency. They aren't drilled in parade like conduct which makes other regiments look at them as though they were less of a soldier. However they would be sorely wrong, marksmen at long range and brutal melee brawlers at short range.

I will be adding more as I go along. I am also going to be putting in short stories about various men in the 97th (some based on actual battles I've played). C+C welcome, but please dont nitpick my grammar, spelling, and punctuation (I already know its horrid).

Very nice... would you perhaps be interested in adding this planet... Marutainia, you say... to the Viridian Subsector project? Or, not, you know... just a suggestion.

As for the information, its quite good, and not stupidly short. I get the feeling that if it is a Confederation of Light hideout, has lots of strong regiments, AND has lots of oil, it would get invaded a fair amount - but thats no bad thing. Well, it is for the planet, but not for fluff.

Just my thoughts.

Where is the Viridian subsector? if its not in northeast Imperial space I cant put my planet there. But I could have certain regiments from Marutainia be mobilized for conflicts there.

To be honest? I have no idea where it is. Somewhere on the eastern fringe. Just south of the Tau empire, i suppose. No ones aked that question before. Ask Arkion. He designed the project.

Notable Men of the 97th Marutanian:

Brigadier General Lucius Cornielius Bachst,

BrGen Bachst is the supreme commander of the Marutainian 97th, he is also one of the only men in the regiment to have been trained in a schola not on the planet Marutainia. He has been the commanding officer since the last one, Lieutenant General Jameus Seymore Pianto lost his life in heroic action against the great enemy on the planet Outholu VII. As is the custom the next highest ranking member of the regiment became the C.O. of the regiment. BrGen Bachst was then only the Colonel of Platoon A, however with the report coming over the vox that he was the new C.O. he quickly organized the defence of the starport the regiment was defending and held off the enemy for 3 days without re-enforcement and minimal casualties. After securing the starportthe newly ordained C.O. was awarded a powersword crafted in the planet's forges and a new bolt pistol (the one he had been using during the battle had been fired so much that the barrel overheated and warped enough that if he had put another clip through on full-auto the gun would have exploded in his face). After a brief Ork clean-up on Godenvia Prime a few months after his promotion to C.O. he had finally apointed a new J.O. to command his old platoon, Platoon A, The man, Sargeant Barthol was found after he failed the rigorous tests to become a Kasrkin. It was only weeks before thier next campaign against a Tyrranid Splinter Fleet. The objective of the 97th and 98th this time was to help the local Arbites escort the people of Krasnogar IV offthe planet. All was going to plan until some of the refugees turned out to be Genestealer hybrids. The entire planet was thrown into turmoil as the local Arbites refused to let any more civilians onto the leaving shuttles until they were tested not to be 'stealer hybrids. Within five days of the crackdown only half the population was off-world and that was when the first 'gants started landing, then the only thing between the 'nids and and a buffet was the 97th and 98th Marutainian, and various Arbites that decided to help the Marutanians out. The 97th rallied against this new threat under the leadership of their new C.O. Bachst, and with help from the mighty Leman Russes of the 98th they stopped the endless tide of chitin. Finally re-enforcements from the Yaleken 214th and Kaiseran 723rd and 849th arrived from a troopship in orbit to releive them. The 97th lost almost all of Platoon E to a flanking move by the 'nids that eas led up by two carnifexes and a zoanthrope. Bachst himself lost his left eye to a 'nid warrior's claws. For his actions he was promoted from Colonel to Brigadier General, and he recieved the Marutainian Cross Of Bronze, this prestigious award is only given to member of the Marutainian gaurd or PDF who shows outstanding bravery and a sharp tactical mind, even in the face of overwhelming adversity.

His current staff are,

Master Sargeant Finneus Vargus,
The Master-Vox operator of the 97th, he is a failed techpriest and chose to join the gaurd when he was not admitted into the brotherhood of techpriests. His great skills with machines and thier workings almost got him a position in the 98th, however he requested a posting in a frontline unit (Emperor only knows why). His skills with the vox and managing the flow of garbled messages, as well as his ability to repair the unt in the middle of battle eventually led him to the top of the chain, and hes been there ever since.

Colour Sargeant Mikealus Shazzo,
Shazzo is an ex-Kasrkin who was hand chosen by Bachst to carry the battle standard of the 97th into battle. Only the Brigadier General himself knows much about Shazzo and his past, he rarely speaks, but when he does it is often a simple platitude of battle. The other men find him oddly detached from the rest of the regiment.

Corporal Franklin Madd,
Madd is the head field Surgeon of the 97th, his low military rank leads many to belive he has the position only because he is the son of a wealthy Pharmacutical company co-owner (Madd & Gamble) back on Marutania. However before he joined the gaurd he was top of his class in Medical Schola, and aftr he joined his skills with a scalpel were reported to the top brass, who until Bachst took over, wouln't even consider him for top surgeon. Bachst however had his bionic eye put in by Madd and then asked him if he was willing to be head surgeon which he gratefully accepted.

Private First Class Gerogio Brags,
Brags is an ex-ganger who chose to join the gaurd along with some of his gang friends to escape the lawless underhive. Always a bit of a pyromaniac he eventually was assigned to flamer duty, which was in the words of one of his friends Lance Coroporal Volcan "The best damn thing that emperor could ask for, and the worst our enemies could". He worked so well with his friend fire that he was eventually let into D platoon's command staff where he asked for a bigger gun, and a bigger gun he got. He is now the 'Meltagun Extrodinaire' in H.Q.

Commissar Justinian Bartolomeu,
The son of a priest who decided to join the gaurd to become closer to the Emperor. His outstanding battle record earned him the right to go back to the schola on Marutania to become a senior officer. Bartolomeu instead chose to go to a schola on another planet to learn the ways of the Commissariat. This is of course extremely rare, however he was allowed to attend, and after four years of schooling and another five as a Cadet Commissar in the Jumaken 223rd, he has finally returned to be the head Commissariat official of the 97th.
