2003 GD Wolf Priest - Possibly my favourite model
« on: August 27, 2006, 09:55:26 AM »

Ok so i put down the usual army style quick painting and decided to spend longer on a mini. I spent a whole week on this piece instead of the usual couple of nights, and i took a large pic so you can see the flaws and detail.

But overall i'm quite hapy with this as a showcase piece. I know its not golden demon level, but i like the little touches, like the wood grain, the granite hammer, the detailed winged wolf skulls, the wrinkles and lines on his face etc etc.

Hope you like it as much as i do.

Alright have you entered this in a Golden Demon? Cause if not your selling yourself wayyyyy too short, and if you have i'll kick each of those judges asses. I am right now looking at your Space Wolf Army on Cool Mini or not, your rating for that army is 836 votes at 8.5.

But golden demon aside and really who cares i would be honored to see this entire space wolf army. Heck it's on my background and i stil complain every day that your picture wasn't 1280 x 960. And BTW if you do got a picture of that size please by all means send to to me pm.

As for commenting about this model. Everything looks perfect. I can't complain i'd do a couple of things different (i'd have a color for your maul's cord instead of silver, and i'd have "tried" (notice the quotes, cause i would probably have botched it) to paint some runes on the head skull.

BEAUTIFUL WORK. I would truely love to see what you could come up with for a GD if you really put your mind to it.  You definately got a talent.

The light reflections off the black armour are gorgeous Gareth! You nailed those perfectly. It's overall a fantastic showcase piece and would definately do well in a GD tournament. The wod grain is strong, but subtle, the stone for the head of the warhammer is beautiful and the bone pieces...what can I say? Gorgeous piece, he'd be an awesome compliment to your army. I agree with QP, you don't give yourself enough credit.

Very cool indeed, as usual.  But folks, Gareth knows what he's talking about when he says it's not GD level.  It's one of those miniatures where there's absolutely not a single bad word you could say about it yet somehow it hasn't quite got that 'something' it would need to place at a GD. It also lacks freehand which, as I understand it, is a pre-requisite for doing well nowadays.  For comparison, look at the winning single miniature pieces at GD France 2006 (I can't get enough of that marine with heavy bolter).

I think the hammer head is the best painted part, for me that has got the extra something.

Gareth would you mind explaining how you did the armor? The black armor looks awesome and I love the line down the arm and other places that shows the reflection level of the light hitting it. I have a few Death Company Marines that would like a little detail like that and would love to know how you achieve it.

Its looking awsome Gareth, Definatly GD material.

The black armor is top knotch.  I can tell what your pallete was, I'm just curious, what was the highest grey you used?  By the looks of it, it looks like Fortress Grey, but the pic can be decieving.

Also, what components did you use for the conversion.  The model itself looks top knotch.

Good work.

ok here is a nice indication of how far i have progressed in the past year.

This was painted by me a year ago.

I think the attention to detail has certainly improved as has colour depth, and the application of metals.

The only thing I like better on the old one is the white lining on the cloak than the red you've chosen for the current one. I think it makes it look more like a naturally tanned hide.

I disagree, I think the red lining adds much needed warmth and colour to an otherwise predominantly cold and grey figure.

The one thing I do think is better on the old model though is the eye!
