Title: Would creating a Tyranid BFG fleet using 40k bits be possible?
Post by: Nihilanth on October 18, 2008, 01:31:02 AM
The subject tells it all. I'm considering building a BFG fleet out of all of the Tyranid bits I have left over. Here are my ideas:
-The drones could be made fairly easily out of greenstuff and genestealer or hormagaunt scything talons.
-Razorfiend could be made with the large warrior talons, greenstuff, and various monstrous creature/warrior bits.
-Hive ship looks like a lot of greenstuff, plus spare carnifex back carapace, plus various bits and stuff.

So that you can provide suggestions for this project, I guess I should let you know what bits I have. Basically I have tons of bits from just about every plastic Nid kit, especially weapons and biomorphs. I have several spare gaunts and hormagaunts that could be turned into ships or parts of them. I have tons of unused rippers. I also have spare bits from IG tanks and heavy weapons that might be put to use as the basis of some of these ships...

What do you think? Also, I have some questions and favors to ask.
-Does anyone know what the hell a Kraken looks like? It's listed in the PDF, but there's no picture or model for it...
-Could anyone help me figure out how big these ships are? I don't have access to any Tyranid ship models and I'm not too familiar with BFG in the first place. Measurements and base sizes would be great, but pictures of actual ships would be super.
-I'm going to assume that since they're Tyranids my ships don't have to look EXACTLY like the GW models, right?

EDIT:
I just thew together a drone ship and it turned out decent looking. I have enough bits to make 10 of these and it was really easy.

I don't play BFG, but in the second Ultramarines book Kraken are mentioned a lot, and are described as looking like giant manta rays.

Not a whole lot of detail otherwise.

Hope that helps a little

I have seen it done before and with excellent results. Here are some links from my bookmark collection.

The models aren't your problem when doing Tyranids for BFG. The sucky rules are the problem

Apart from what Chuckles said, here are two more links.

The second link will lead you to a Warprift .pdf doc (7 mb) with a great conversion tutorial.

P.S.

I have added a thread which I was looking for almost two hours (I didn't bookmark it. Very dumb.) The thread is quite short - only 3 pages but the fleet is made out of bits (mostly).

This would be my top suggestion if you decide to build a nid BFG fleet.

My 7 Cents.

Awesome! Thanks for all the links guys. Those are mostly amazing looking models and they've given me tons of good ideas. The problem is I'm a dirt poor college student and I was hoping I could get by without buying any new models but it's looking quite evident that I can't build a hive ship without some sort of base creature. The cruisers and escorts can probably fairly easily be made from bits so I guess I'll just need to buy something for a hive ship since I don't want to cannibalize any of my nids... I think the carnifex based hive ships look a bit like overkill since carnifexes are too fat, so I think I'll try to find a warrior to turn into my hive ship.

Again thanks for all the input. I'll post pictures here as I go!

UPDATE:
I've begun work on my first cruiser. Thanks to all of your links I have tons of ideas and it has become clear that I can be very flexible with my designs so I am no longer trying to completely mimic the GW models. So here are some pics for you guys of what I've done so far.

First is my new drone. It's either a Vanguard or a Kraken with some feeder tentacles. Made with a warrior head carapace, greenstuff, wire, and the carapace from gaunt upgrade sprues. I really like the way it turned out, but it's a little on the small side.

Here is everything I have done so far. It includes 3 Escort Drones, 1 Vanguard/Kraken drone, and the beginnings of my first cruiser. The cruiser looks very primitive right now and that's obviously a carnifex head, but I still have weapons, bits, and plenty of greenstuff to add.

And I've begun to plan my first Hive Ship. Right now I'm considering using either an F14 Tomcat model or the front bottom part of an aircraft carrier hull as the basis for the ship. Obviously I'll greenstuff it beyond recognition, but the shape is the important part. I test fitted the Tomcat with some carnifex carapace and scything talons and it looks pretty good. I have no idea what the hull section hive ship would look like, but I'm tempted to leave the carrier whole and use it to make a MASSIVE hive ship later on or something.
