Your Local GW Store
« on: July 29, 2015, 07:09:36 AM »
What do you say/think to yourself when you are making a visit to your local GW Store? According to the financial report the reason that GW is rebranding their stores to Warhammer is because that is what their customers call them. I have never said that I am off to the Warhammer store so I was just wondering if any of you call your store the Warhammer Store.

It would be odd timing, given the rebranding of Age of Sigmar.  ???

'Round here, it's Games Workshop. Or Gee-Dubs, if tossed out casually. My wife calls it, "The Geek Store". Not 'a' geek store. 'The' Geek Store. We go plenty of geeky places, but GW is "The Geek Store".

Except Age of Sigmar is still a Warhammer game, so not that weird really.

Personally, I don't have to worry about my store being rebranded because it is an independent retailer.  The original owner sold the store back in 2007 and it went from being called "Nexus Games and Hobbies" to "Phoenix Games and Hobbies."  You know... because Phoenix rose from the ashes of Nexus.

Right, moving on.

Warhammer is a large part of the store and dominates a good portion of the sales wall, but because it isn't a GW, the owner is able to carry more brands.  So we have Flames of War, X-wing, Wild West Exodus, Warmahordes, D&D, Magic...

It really is the premier geek store in the city.  There are two others in town that are closer to the universities, but one has pretty much gone down to just Magic, and the other is a general hobby store.

Around my way it's just called Gee Dubya.  And ours is the only one in Northern Ireland (there was another one years ago but it closed quickly, and there's two down south in Dublin).  I'd be gutted if it closed too.  That's where I played my first game (September 17th, 1998), and regularly spent my Saturdays from then to 2004.  It's all nostalgic.

It's the "little man store" in my wife's parlance.   I think she's only talking about the models.

I wish I had a GW store close to me. The nearest one is over 2 hours drive away. My local gaming store is just half that distance :)

An hour drive to go to a gaming store?  How do you survive that?

Well i have mine 1 hour by bus from me (20 minute by car but parking fee are so expensive it coost me 4to5 time as much as by bus). Most of the time I would call the shop "games workshop" but it happened, more often than i wish to, for me to call it "the hoodlum nest". As i'm getting annoy seeing rising price for real some quality improvement if any improvements at all. But that's an other discution.

Back in school, the guys who would pick on us for being nerds called it Warhammer.
"I can't believe you actually go to Warhammer!"
Then I could be all cocky and say "Warhammers a game, not a location!", but now it seems I'm gonna need a new line  :'(

In seriousness though, I had a wander past the Glasgow Games Workshop earlier and it has changed it's sign. Never noticed it before, so I wonder how long it's been like that.

It's most likely a recent change, because it is my understanding that not all stores have even been renamed Warhammer yet.  I'll have to go to see whether my local GW has changed its name too.  I rarely go anywhere near it, even though it's only about a drive of 20-25 minutes.

@ WaitWhat

Yeah I remember those days.  It almost made me quit too.  :P

As for the name, gamesworkshop used to make a huge variety of games.  Many of them unconnected to either one of the Warhammer universes.  So Gamesworkshop was a very suitable name.  Now however it's all about Warhammer so the name change makes a bit of sense.  They seem to be trying to bring back the specialist game range though so maybe it's a bit premature though.

I'd say that the change is partially from how the store is referred to.  How many times have you said you're headed to Games-Workshop and got a funny look, then explained it was the warhammer store?

Anyways, I'm kind of excited now.  A Games-Workshop Warhammer store is opening in town in a very busy commercial area.  My initial reaction was skeptical be cause I was concerned that it would drive the LGS, that I have gone to for the past 16 years, out of business.  But the new manager is a great guy who.is passionate about the hobby and wants to build the community in conjunction with all of the stores in the city.

So how we're looking at it is that having an actual GW store in town will only benefit the gaming community.

Aye, 3 stores trialed the change for around 6 months and then it was started to be rolled out from around Feb/March this year. All new stores open as 'Warhammer' branded and any store that moves location or gets a refit gets changed too. There's close to 40 Warhammer stores in UK and a scattering of others around the world.
Should all be done in 5 years apparently, according to my sources.
