Title: Summer Painting Challenge [Month 3/3]
Post by: Kitsune Tsuki on August 1, 2007, 03:23:51 PM
Welcome to the August Painting Challenge. We are now into the 2nd year of these, first under Loydb, Khemri Demon, Serious Callers Only and now me. The goal of this challenge is to get some of that unpainted lead that most of us have laying around table-ready. At the start of each month, participants pledge to have a squad painted by the closing date.

I will update this post with a list of people who wish to vow.

RULES

1. Vows will be frozen 10 days after the start of the challenge. There is no changing of *any* vow after day 10. Say what you'll paint, then paint what you say. If you don't already own the models you want to paint, I suggest not making the vow until you do.  Vows are still accepted after the 10th, but they can not be changed afterward.

2. This is more of a request than a rule. *Please* post work in progress pics if you possibly can. One of the best things about the thread is watching stuff come together.  It's perfectly fine if you don't post any photos, however.

3. I need to know unit sizes when you post your vows.

FAQ
Q: Do I have to do Games Workshop figs?
A: No. Several people make Warmachine vows, myself included.  Feel free to do vows based on any game system.

Q: I need to change my vow!
A: You have until Day 10 of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There are no prizes, so you only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?

A: That's the goal. Assuming the board manages to stay up

Q: Hey, what if we finish our vow but decide to paint more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's kind of cheesy to make a vow with a 75% painted unit at the start of the month...

I might as well do this.

I pledge a meager job on 5 Sister Seraphims.

Btw, does this mean I have to finish it at the end of the month or just 10 days?

ok, even though it's almost done, i want to finish my defiler, and my gaunts and genestealers

Btw, does this mean I have to finish it at the end of the month or just 10 days?

You have the whole month. Ten days would be rather unmanageable.

There are only 4 unpainted models in my Eldar collection at the moment, making it pretty straightforward to choose my vow:

2 swooping hawks
1 swooping hawk exarch
1 howling banshee exarch with executioner

Well, I failed last month (Again) so maybe I should try something big.

I Pledge:

10 Dire Wolves

1 Banshee

10 Guardsmen

1 Sentinel

and 1 Hellhound

All the IG stuff is using Foleran colors.

I just want to let people know, I was without internet access last month, but I pledged and did it anyway! I had some down time on my templars, so I painted my Wood Elf Spellsinger.

Anyway, this month I pledge another 10 Initiates. No college, no job, and no money to do anything tends to leave a guy with a lot of time on his hands.

...No college, no job, and no money to do anything tends to leave a guy with a lot of time on his hands.
You'd think so, wouldn't you...unfortunately I still managed to fail my vow last month.  I will not make the same mistake again (third time's a charm, I tried in December last year)!

I pledge 12 Striking Scorpions.

I don't want to bite off more than I can chew (again) and I don't know whether I would get more than that done anyway.

Nice to see this still going. I haven't touched a brush in 6 months or so, and am going to be travelling 2 of the 4 weeks this month, so I'm going to ease in.

Complete previously started Eldar Ranger unit. The new book meant I had to bolster my 3-man crew up to 5, so I was just going to combine another 3-man crew that I had barely started. Then I saw the direct mail only Ranger fig, and liked it, so the final squad size will be 7.

Hmm....Since I am pretty sick of painting Nids for the time being, I'm going to try to do a whole smorgasborg of different stuff.

20 Night Goblins with Spears (BofSP)
12 Dwarves (BofSP)

Since these are already mostly painted anyways, I'll also add in these:

1 Empire Warrior Priest (my showcase model for the month)
1 Reiklander Youngblood and 1 Witchhunter (Mordheim figs in the bargain bin! Yay!)
3 Ork Slugga Boyz
6 Ork Shoota Boyz
1 Dwarf Cannon and Crew (3 minis)
1 Tyranid Warrior and 2 Ripper Swarms

Like I said, it's an odds and ends kind of month. Trying to paint all the unpainted models I have before picking up any new stuff (yeah, right!)

ok time for another fun filed vow

I am sick of paitning normal IG guys sooooo

2 Heavy Weapons Squads
1 Command Squad
1 Basilisk

(this finished up a 1,000 pt tourney list which I need in a few weeks)

then I am onto some LoTR stuff

5 Knights of Minis Tirith
24 warriors of minas tirith
6 Veterns/fountain court gaurd
and Faramir mounted and on foot

going to be tough to stick to that since I am placing a Forgeworld order next week to get a Macarius Vanquisher variant! and a leman russ vanq and a conq, and a exterminator...

Having never previously completed a vow, I'll make this aseasy formyself as possible; also I am coming to the end of my thesis, and am now hampered with a reasonably beslubbering insane German history professor; I blame this on the Marshall plan.

I vow 3 Dire Avengers (probably the same ones I vowed last time).

Can I play?   :D  My first time making a vow here.

I pledge to complete the following:
1 Heroic Senior Officer
1 Master Vox Operator
2 Command Squad Veterans
1 Leman Russ Battle Tank
1 Sentinel
10 Man Infantry Squad

And I'll post a pic when they're completed!

Seeing as how I overestimated myself last month, I'll go for a smaller vow this time.  I pledge:

1 Storm Trooper squad
1 Basilisk
1 Lascannon heavy weapon team

I'll add more if I'm overcome with a desire to paint things before the 10th.  I had promised my Leman Russ a paint job after it's fantastic performance this week, but it might have to wait.

Man, I already got one figure done last night (I stay up until 4am, no work until 12:30-9):

BTW: Individual figures are much more fun to paint than troops IMO.

Voila:

Vows Updated.

Lylyth and the Warmonger are almost done, they just need the flesh done on their hands (Bow and warcleaver respectively). Finished Lylyth and the Warmonger. The rhino is has one of the two 'turrets' finishes, so that's almost complete. Everything else hasn't been touched yet (2 Flameguard 80% done, 2 Primed, Priest untouched)

Pshemas; Unit size?
Watty; Unit sizes?

Right, I've almost finished the conversions on the Avengers... just need to apply a file to a couple and then undercoat. I'll post pictures when I get home.

On the other hand, I got 72 Vallejo model paints in the mail yesterday (my mother-in-law bought them for my birthday). Aaargh! The paints are really great, but there are so many, and the colours are so subtle and ever so slightly-different from GW colours. It will still take me ages to get the colour sets right. A good problem, but still a problem.

I think I might post up a little WIP of my test model.  The yellow has come out a little thicker than I intended, but that's what a test model is for I guess.  I'm feeling a lot of hate for citadel paints and look forward to replacing more with Vallejo.

I did a little bit of painting with my Vallejo paints this morning before class. WOW. Whenever you read stuff on the net about Vallejo, you always think "Jeez, are these guys getting paid or what? nothing is that good" But it's true, they are. I'm really glad I went for model colour as well... they have some really great colours, like greeny-browns that are just perfect for doing weathered bone.

Sorry, I know you don't need to be told how great they are, I just needed to gush a little.  :D

As to the model... I am probably not the best person to comment, because I have always hated the tennis ball look of Scorpions (bright green, bright yellow). I think if you replaced the yellow with red-brown they would look better. Less like a cartoon.

EDIT; I have lost the USB cable for my partners camera, so I may not be able to post photographs (I will try and borrow one).

:'( I like the tennis ball look  :'(
Heh.  I don't mind it myself and that's how I painted my old ones, so I'll probably keep them with the yellow, but thanks for the advice, they would look less cartoony, but goofy isn't too bad either.

Vallejo black of all things leaves my mouth watering.  So smooth.

Myung, you are a painting machine.  In fact, I find myself doubting your human-ness quite a lot with these painting challenges.  At least you've slowed down this month.

Myung, you are a painting machine.  In fact, I find myself doubting your human-ness quite a lot with these painting challenges.  At least you've slowed down this month.

He probably hires sweatshop labourers so that he can be "King of the Painting Vow Challenge". ;)

[thinks about what I just wrote)

Aaargh, bloody hell,, get off 40k online Mem, you're just wasting time.

lol guys. I really enjoy painting.

here is my secret though

go get a job where you have to deal with the public for 8 hours a day, but on top of that live in a very VERY well to do city where everyone thinks they are gods because they have millions and millions in the bank so they treat people waiting on them like trash.  so by the time you get home you need several hours of quiet you time to center yourself and waaahla you can paint a lot :p

I just bought another 40 IG off of ebay new on sprue! So yay more to do lol. but i plan on having all my IG rebuilt and repainted by the end of September. (I sold almost all of it last December to get new stuff) But I am on vacation in 7 days and am only going to be out doing stuff for 3 of the 9 nine days so i plan on painting bucket loads of models even though my vow is small this month.

Maybe you guys can help me out! I cannot make up my mind on which Macharius to get! should I get the regular one or the vanquisher one?

I'm sorry.  I have to change my vow.  I can't rush myself to complete a conversion so that I can paint it.

new vow:

5 drones: 4 gun and one markerlight
10 fire warriors

WOW. wow
If that was me, I would take one look at that pile, run out the door and into the cupboard for a half hour of foetal moaning. That's crazy.

BTW Myung, do you live with your parents, on your own or with a partner? I'm at University, so there is never really time "off", but even so I find it difficult to spend as much time as I would like painting because when I get home there a million and one things to be done.

I just like comming home from work and putting on my ipod and painting for a few hours.

My vow

2 black orc blockers
2 blitzers
2 throwers
5 linesmen 4 linesmen

I have finished one so i know have my colour scheme!

I wanted to go for a very rough, worn-out and bloodied look. The uniform is scruffy and covered in blood, probably my best model yet. I know it does'nt show it very well but the model is highlighted and its not as blurry in real life obviously ^^

that looks great!   yeah a lot of people like black rims on their bases because it's a neutral color and helps differentiate (sp?) the mini from the table.  Eh I persoanlly, well like you said don't wanna repaint all my bases!  keep up the good work!

DJ-of-E,

Those Sisters are smoking!  Excellent work!

Thanks a lot.  I kept hearing that a very well painted sisters army is the most awesome looking batch on this forum.  So I might as well make an army out of it.

That and I really like how the sisters are played in terms of style.  I also really love how the Sisters of Repentia look.  The only grief I had with them is that they only attack once per repentia sister in CC phase.  That's really gimp considering they're supposed to be CC specialists.

Well, I have 1/3 of my vow done and omg, it's taking a long time.  Scorpion Green over a black undercoat is killing my inner child.  I'm quite happy with the results, I do a level of shading and two levels of highlights.  It's hard to make out in the photos, but in real life it looks good.  At the moment it's harder to keep the motivation up until I start highlighting the green, after that I usually knock out the rest of the mini in one sitting.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi163.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Ft285%2FRazzrojo%2FDSC00124.jpg&hash=663ffa0d50a8e4120b2882c907d82a657e2018e3)
This is going to be a tough vow, because I'm spending so much time on these guys and it's still taking ages.  *sigh*
Title: Re: Summer Painting Challenge [Month 3/3]
Post by: Myung on August 14, 2007, 04:20:34 AM
Rojo you should batch paint them man. It will get them done a lot faster then doing one mini at a time.

I know it's tough and sometimes when you batch paint it feels like it will never end but it will!

as for me I am 75% done on my basilisk. It is my first vehicle for my army and I am rather happy with the way the camo came out. just to mess it up now with some weathering.
Title: Re: Summer Painting Challenge [Month 3/3]
Post by: Rojo on August 14, 2007, 04:54:52 AM
I normally batch paint, Myung, but this time I felt like doing them individually, I wanted to do a good job and I've found I have more enthusiasm doing them like this.  When I get back onto less awesome models, like fantasy stuff or Dark Eldar I'll go back to batch painting.

EDIT: oh yeah, I got another one done today, enough for a legal squad!  Woo hoo!

Don't mind the base, he has another one now which is far better flocked. I finished my second kroxigor aswell last night around 1:00 and will be working on my last one today.

Stop whining and start painting? :P

I finsihed my kroxigors, took me till 3:50 as I was to busy with gaming untill I noticed the time.

So here is a group shot.

(https://www.40konline.com/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fv350%2Fheijden%2FP8170499.jpg&hash=ebe45d7bbfd2d56bd220f8bf0bc24f70afb5017e)

I am very happy with the overall results, its also the first time that I actually did something with the bases [although its still simple]. I will paint the skinks when possible and make a group shot in the end where they will be charging through them :D

Right, starting painting the tank now, the basic scheme idea I'm shamelessly nicking from Parak's 40th Corps Tank Painting Tutorial with a few minor modifications to better suit my style of painting.

I haven't updated the vows with late vowers (For clarification, you may vow after the tenth, but you cannot change).

Anyways, progress.  I got base coat of grey and brown down on my rune priest, as well as highlighted some flesh areas.  I also painted a nephilim for my legion army.  I also bought a second forsaken, and need to paint him.  Going to need him next weekend in a tournament.  He's been built and I added a nice large rock base for him.

DA as in what? I seriously dont hope you mean 3 dark angel characters as that would be a full day to paint those :P.

I have 5 of the 10 skinks finished, need to clean the second half and paint those up before completing my vow. I have been to busy to paint lately due to handling all the trades on the board and enjoying my last few days of my holiday :P

Hidden away in the Imperial Guard project board I'm afraid.

My pistoliers are coming along decently, more or less. I've nearly completed 3 of the 5 horses. Every single one of them will have a different colour.

3 dire avenger models? Thats not even a whole squad, how do you tend to paint them overalli in that case that you can't make it? Inkt and drybrushing are your friends to get a decent looking mini in a decent amount of time.

Aye as Pax said the tutorial is still on the project forums, I think it's tagged now though so should appear soon I would imagine.

Turrets finished meanwhile, now for the hull.

I understand in theory how to paint models quickly, just as, in theory, I understand the attraction to consuming Bacardi Breezers in a night club fillled with horrible jocks. I just can't do it myself.

I will post pictures as soon as I have a camera, you can be my Alpha and Omega when it comes to determine if the time was worth it. ;)

Well, this month isn't going according to plan. I've changed jobs and had family in the hospital, so,  I am slowly plugging away, and I have very nearly finished:

The Skull Pass Dwarves (just need flocked/based/bases painted)

Finished:

2 Ork Shootas
Mordhiem Witchhunter

Not gonna happen this month:
Probably the Goblins, unless I get a lot of free time this weekend. I might get another Ork or two done. The Tyranid Warrior might still get painted up. The other Skull Pass stuff is just getting put on hold so far.

Ahh, and last months vow went so well. Oh well.

@Myung, really nice looking guard. There are only 2 things which kinda bugs me seeing the rest is painted such quality:

1. The yellow on your officer looks a bit weird,  I would rather have gone for a red thingy instead.

2. The glasses on your crewman of the autocannns should be fixed, just act like it are gems and paint them like that. I think that this will make them look allot better.

For the rest, I envy you for having such a army ;) it looks great. I have been trading and buying some Vostroyans lately myself. [like 40/80 models now] and need to make a army out of it. Problem is: there isn't a model in it with a autocannon. Does anyone here has a solution?

Aye good job their Myung, my only suggestion would be maybe invest in a pin vice and drill those heavy weapons barrels perhaps?

funny thing is I did it to the heavy weapons on the tanks but didn't do it to the heavy weapon teams. I guess i can always go back and do it.

Watty your Orks are looking good. we need a group shot!

Nice Orks there Watty.   ;)  The darkish green looks good.  though I wonder about your usage of red.  it looks like you have rusty red over the metal armor and then perhaps blood on their hands and this and that?  having the same red on both areas serves to make it look like you just slathered red arbitrarily over the whole model at the end.  I would try to clean it up a bit or differentiate between different areas of red or something.

Myung=painting machine.  I am struggling to finish 10 dudes and some drones and this guy paints 10 platoons and an armored company.  they look great!

well my vow is coming along allright and I may have some bonus stuff.

and for the 3rd time ( is it the 3rd or 4th? ) ill be failing my vow. my free time is really getting limited, it sucks and i might have to quit 40k or get rid of my g/f (there can only be one!).

i did get much accomplished this month even for failing and i might actually get my chimera done this weekend as it has minor things to be done to it. seeing as im hoping to be starting a winter campaign with my DA ill be painting them and adding them in a squad at a time if i can, i need to have more time to paint to play so we shall see what happens next month. i know ill be distracted with my Macharius tho....

I have over 150 models waiting for her to be painted, being goblins, skinks, kroxigors, terradons, spider riders and allot more. I aint gonna paint all that amphetamine parrot in my own :P

Funny thing, I know a guy who did that and somehow the girl end up breaking up with him for that.  Let's just say whenever she mentions her "loser" boyfriend, she mentions Warhammer.  Another funny thing, the same guy now makes 60k a year after he graduated and girl is now dating a guy whom is cheating on her (yet she knows, but has no one else to turn to).

*sigh* LIFE of a 40k is never an easy one.

The quality of my camera sucks and the blood is actually 3 different shades of red + ink, also the wierd focus makes the blood blurry and look bigger than it actually is. Its more defined than it seems, there are scrapes of blood here and there. It took alot of time and it looks better than on the pictures i can assure you.

Myung my webcam cant really get a decent pic of my painted bloodbowl team so i'll have to post the black orc duo.

It seems that girls are more attracted to the fantasy side of GW. Even so my GF liked the skinks, a friend of her and mine [also female] started to help us out to and I have convinced another one to paint dwarfs because she likes the models [making a deal with her friend which is my mate to trade his goblins for the battle of skull pass vs my dwarfs once he buys the box.] and now I started talking to a gf of another mate and she likes the tomb king army allot and likes painting so wants to give tomb kings a try bumping the total of women painters at our shop up to 4! :P

You don't need to force them, most of them like painting and drawing. The problem is that nobody gives them a chance to show how to pain the miniatures if they are interested. If you are able to spare a mini or 2 that they like give it to them and a brush to help you out. You quickly start to see that they WANT to paint them, not just for you but because they want to.

Of course they dont feel like painting a whole army in several weeks like we want to do, but its great if they help you out every now and then. I can't see the difference between my GF and my painted skinks aside of some really minor details which you need to know in order to see the difference.

Still no late vow updates.  You're in my head, so I haven't forgotten about you guys.  Anyways, I got my four flameguard done, and my rune priest is about 70% done, give or take.  Need to do his staff, face and then touch ups/little bits like wires.

Flameguard (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v248/FadingJew/Warmachine/Menoth/PaintedFlameguard.jpg)  Big picture!

I know the images are crappy, my camera fu has been weak lately.  My images turn out washed out, and supersized.  Real pain in the ass.

I've been taking my time painting the Pistoliers' horsies. It's all been pretty experimental for me, as I've never painted horses without barding or caparisons before. I used the Kislev army book, "Collecting & Painting Wargames Armies", wikipedia and other sources for reference. I still need to add static grass and paint the bases' sides goblin green, but other than that the horses are finished. The Pistoliers will be done in a very striking red and black scheme, and hopefully I'll even manage it in time.

Note that the pictures link to bigger versions.

scorched brown, dark flesh, brown ink, dark flesh
shadow grey, codex grey, fortress grey
dark flesh, vermin brown, brown ink
graveyard earth, kommando khaki

Come on put your shoulders under it. I know you guys can finish the last bits if you really want to.

Sidenote for next months vow: I want to enter with a stegadon, thing is that my GF wants to paints the skink riders of it which might take longer then a month. Is it ok that I paint 5 normal skinks which should be a substitute for the riders? [Otherwise I could just call it a lame conversion :P]

I have more then enough models to keep on going till next year seeing all the lizardmen I recently bought and traded. So open up another thread and I will vow more units.

Alright, I'm going away and will be back monday. September vows are already up.

As for my vow, I fell flat on my face in the final stretch. I needed to touch up the armor on my rune priest, then do his back pack, which I had totally forgotten about. That said, I did do a forsaken and a nephilim for my legion army as well, so I'm content with what I painted this month.

Sterling work on that Russ, Gravis. The colour scheme is very similar to how I used to paint my Guard tanks. I've changed it since because I felt the scheme looked too grey. Some nice big company markings on your tank should solve that problem.

As for my own vow, I've failed. :-[ The usual strategy of a last-minute bumrush to finish didn't work as Hannibal was on TV last night. Anyway, pictures of how far I got!

Note that the first and fourth pictures are links to bigger versions. As you'll see I still need to do metallics, the helmet plumes, the base edges and static grass. Shots three and four reveal how the armour will look, as that stage is halfway done on the leftmost pistolier. They'll all have that black Reiter-like armour. The bright red was achieved with a chaos black basecoat followed by one layering of scab red, then one layering of blood red.

Rojo, congrats on the scorpions. That's a lot of work for one month. I built the same squad (two boxes) and had to spread the painting across three different monthly vows.
