Seriously how stupid can one nation get? I think the US has hit an all time low, the question is can they dig a deeper hole for themselves? I guess only time will tell.

This is news?  Sadly these are not the first, and probably will not be the last such events we hear of.    The problem is that it's like an avalanch.  They start with one thing, then go on to the next...and the next....and the next...

I am just so impressed that it was deemed inappropriate to carry a certain book in your closed bag. Removed for "your own protection." Next time I go to the US (oh yeah, never again, sorry about that) I will carry born in my bag on sheeer principle and see if anyone thinks they should confiscate that "for my own protection". Ludicrous.

Lost Roads - finally released!

I don't think it's a all time low for them, they're pretty much always on that level

eh.  Remind me of an LJ I read some time ago by someone who, in anger at Bush being re-elected had posted very angrily in her LJ, wishing him dead or something along those lines, somehow the American Sekrit Servis found out and paid her a visit, even though she was a harmless angsty teenager who made an entry during a fit of pissyness ...

And to be fair, who'd care if he WAS dealt with? :P

I can just imagine the justification for taking porn away.

"This magazine (or other pornographic thing) will cause you harm, I must confiscate it"
"How will it harm me?"
"...You...could...ge t blisters!  Yeah that's it, blisters"

Seriously, though, is it legal to confiscate literature on no real grounds what so ever?

The best internet filter blotch up was this woman said that she couldn't come over to the election party (you know, sit round, eat, get pissed and be-atch as you watch the party you voted for slowly lose) because her *blah* had been killed and she had to go to the funeral and thus couldn't watch the election to see who was going to be the next President.

I believe she sued the FBI.

I find it amazing that the FBI thinks terrorists would be dumb amphetamine parrots enough to publish their plans on the internet in the form of a Live Journal that can easily be viewed by anyone with enough power (ie the FBI).

No, not anymore.  I'm not sure where they believe it is now, but based on the lack of a search for Bin Laden, I doubt they're looking for him amazingly hard anymore.  And a few months ago they thought international terrorism was controled by Iraq, and they included the 9/11 attacks in there.  Look at the search they had for Saddam.  You don't see them doing as much of that for Bin Laden.

heh, I should probably have read this before posting my own thread.. :-[

But I find this absurd.  This guy's life is probably ruined now, even if he gets off.  A 'suspected' terrorist?  He's not going to get a decent job because of it.  Stupid, utterly Stupid.

Hey, hey, hey now. Relax guys. While America is FAR from perfect, you really shouldn't condemn a nation because of the actions of a few people. Remember, this is the media we are getting the information from.

Just to play devil's advocate since there is nobody else argueing the other side, I will speak up in defense.

We don't have the entire story. Sure the kid says it is just a story, but apparently there is something else going on with the kid if the family's first reaction is to call the police. All we have heard is that the grandparents found the story, called the police, and the kid saying that it was just a story. In the links I did not see anything saying the grand parent's rational for calling the police right away or the reason the police are thinking about prosecuting. Perhaps the kid has been in previous trobule. Maybe he has past violent behavior. Maybe he is on medication. We need both sides.

Don't condemn our legal system. The police are required to take these claims seriously, especially in cases of sexual assualt and terroisim. Because they are required to do so, they must investigate, gather evidence, and prosecute if they have the evidence to do so or if they feel the kid is a threat. Apparently they feel the kid is a threat. We don't know. The media and everyone has jumped on the kid's side.

I don't have enough information, but if he is tried in Juvinile court, he might simply be required to see a theripist. If tried in "regular" court, I can easily see the essay not being admissiable due to an illegal search. I just find it funny you guys are yelling at the stupidity of americans because some people aparently jumped the gun, yet you guys are jumping the gun before knowing all the facts.  :-\

Good points. On the other hand, the instant the word Zombie crops up in this kind of thing people tend to laugh or be mildly horrified but calling the police out of terrorism fears is a bit nuts.

Exactly, people tend to laugh or be horrified at the mention of zombies, yet these people called the police because of terrorism fears. What else is behind this story?

If you actually read further down on one of the comments made, it was by apparently a member of his school. The kid in question was organsing to takeover the school with armed students. Wether this was part of some story or not is yet to be seen as he the kid doesn't have English or even evening school English classes.

ok... just because the media doesnt publish it doesnt mean its not happening. we found Saddam easier because Iraq is considerably smaller than Afghanistan and thus, we have less area to search.  as for Bin Laden, i dont believe he is in the middle east, i think he's made it out of there and into asia. remember he needs to use those machines that filter out his blood to keep him alive.  there cant be too many hiding places like that in Afghanistan and in the rest of the middle east. in asia, i suspect the chinese east coast in one of those big cities over there...anyways... nobody thought international terrorism was controlled by Iraq. thats stupid. the reason we attacked Iraq is because the UN put certain rules on Iraqs nuclear and the such capabilities. we had reason to believe that they were in fact breaking those restrictions.  the UN wanted us to get their permission before we acted (which would have either taken too long, or most likely have been declined).  we did not need the UN's permission for the same reason a police officer does not ask the chief if its ok to give a particular speeder a ticket. so we attacked Iraq. and the liberals cried that we were losing hundreds and thousands of people and refused to take into consideration that a few thousand people isnt really anything to cry about when the Russians lost 20 million in WW II and the French lost 10,000 civilians in their liberation in WW II.  as for the WoMD s?  we found evidence that they had them and moved them. we found gas suits in many of thier military facilities. we found the basic ingrediants for chemical weapons in a truck. i think this is enough to justify our attack.  even if we didnt do exactly what we set out to do, we got another good deed done in the process, we de-throned Saddam and established a new government in Iraq (which will no doubt crumble any day now...)
