Help me spend 115 points (and some money)
« on: February 17, 2009, 11:48:12 AM »
Hi all,

I was recently informed that the tournament I'm participating in this coming sunday is not 1500, as I had assumed, but rather a more robust 1850.

This left me in something of a quandry, as my army is fairly new (only about a month and a half old) and while I'm making good progress painting, still in construction.  Anyway, after adding everything I have (as well as some welcome deffkopta reinforcements from a friend, here is my list:

Warboss "Grubbynnutz":   115
Power Klaw, Attack Squig, Cybork Body, Bosspole

Big Mek "Burns Grotgrabber"  115
Kustom force field, cybork body, burna

12 Lootas:     180

8 Nobz:          285
Power klaw, 3 big choppas, painboy, waagh banner, all have cybork bodies
mounted in
Trukk:    45
Grot riggers, red paint job

30 Slugga Boyz:     220
Nob with power klaw, bosspole

30 Slugga Boyz:     220
Nob with power klaw, bosspole

30 Slugga Boyz:     220
Nob with power klaw, bosspole

10 Grotz/1 Runtherder:   40 points
Runtherder with basic kit

5 Deffkoptaz  "The Flying Tanbustaz":    225
Twin Linked Rokkits

Deffkopta "The Black Baron"     70
Twin linked rokkit launcha, buzzsaw

Total:   1735

So this leaves me with 115 points.  After much soul-searching (or grot-beating - which is the orky equivalent I think) I've come up with three alternatives for what to buy, assemble and paint before sunday:

Alternative number 1 "They Calls Me STOMPY!":
1 Deff Dread with skorcha, 3x dread close combat weapons, grot riggers and armor plates:   105
Then I'd add some miscellaneous upgrades somewhere, maybe armor plates on the trukk... for an even 115

This is honestly the one I'm attracted to the most, simply because dreads are so much fun.    However, it would also be the most expensive money wise and may not compliment the rest of my army.

Alternative number 2:  "Where's da trukk?
12 Slugga Boyz in Trukk (RPJ, riggers) led by a power klaw/bosspole nob:  157
To do this, I'd have to move the power klaw nob from my nob squad to lead these boyz.

It'd give me another trukk to zoom alongside my boss and nobz (and maybe even screen them).

Alternative number 3: "Dis tank makes da loudest boom!"

Looted wagon:   120
Boomgun, 'ardcase, big shoota
Drop riggers from the truk to make the extra points

Would give me some long range firepower and would look super cool on the battlefield (I'd pick up a russ for this).

I'm looking for your input on which of these three options I should pursue.   Also, if you can think of another way to spend 115 points without compromising my existing list, then please suggest away.

I'd go with the trukk so then you have your close combat tanks saturated. More targets for the opponent so they wont just focus on the 1 truck comeing zoomiing towards them.

Go with option Drive By.

12 shootas in a truck, I call mine the DriveBy boys.  12 shootas = 72 points, a trukk w/ red paint and grot, (go fast, don't get disabled) = 45 points, total 117 points. Drop the grot if your tight for points.

Use them as the name implies, and you will have a lot of fun with them, proving that the boys don't need no nob.

I'd take the Looted Wagon.  More firepower is never a bad thing.

Though if it was me I'd kit out the Nobz a bit more.  Power Klaws, for example.  You can never have too many Power Klaws.

I agree with Androm. More power klaws = business.

From your list of 3 I would choose the dread though. It's rough and tough, but I'd be worried about the lack of other vehicles in the army making it an easy lascannon target.

I would scratch out option 2 immediately. Taking that last klaw from the Nobz is not worth it for a unit that could be grounded easily with a stray AT shot. And, IMHO, a unit of less than 20 slugga boyz won't do much to the tougher targets you might come up against.

The dread could help to support your infantry, but I would say your best bet is the boomwagon. Although only just more durable than the trukk, swaping the big shoota for a reinforced ram, placing it in terrain would help to keep it up and running.

Thanks for the advice all.

I'm ashamed to admit it, but I  went for option four, which is to drop grot riggers and the mek's burna and cybork and pick up 3 kanz with rokkitz.

Ashamed? But that is an awesome option. If I'm honest, I have never really found grot riggers to be that useful. Rokkit kans are good ranged AT/ AMC as well.

Riggers are only really worth it on Battlewagons and Deffdreads.  Same with Armour Plates, actually.

But a trio of Kans will help you out alot, so I support that notion.
