Sternguard Tactics
« on: June 19, 2015, 08:31:18 PM »
I've been considering doing a small marine force for a very long time now and the new Codex has only exasperated this.  I've also always liked the idea of Sternguard and the Crimson Fists...they're down but not not.  And Spanish!

Would a small force of Sternguard lead by Pedro Kantor, backed up by Dreadnaughts and Scouts be considered cheesy or is it an acceptable army for casual play?

Speaking of Sternguard, what's a good load out for them?  I was thinking that combi-flamers would be a good weapon for them because they can act as a defense against assaults whilst still allowing for those sweet special ammo rounds to be used.

Generally combi meltas, or gravs. I run BA with a priest so I don't mind sticking a combi plasma and a plasma gun in there. I also run one with a heavy flamer for the anti charge and also to toast the infantry after having used the combis.

I assume you are drop podding them?
Just because you can, doesn't mean that you should.

Question - how are you delivering them into battle?

And no that's not cheesy (nor very competitive)

Yes, definitely deploying them by Drop Pod, so that they can immediately advance into rapid fire range.  I'd like some Dreadnoughts in Pods as well to back them up.

And Sternguard wouldn't be the only units in this force but it would be built up around them.

You could take the veteran formation and take 3 squads of sternguard in drop pods.  The formation has a few nice bonuses.

How to equip then depends on what you want them to do.  I give mine combi meltas. You could also give one a pair of heavy flamers and combi flamers and have some nice crowd control.

I find 7 or 8 is a good number for a unit. Since you'll be going infantry heavy go for more bodies. Scout squads infiltrating into cover and some dreads with stock multi meltas in pods and you have a versatile force.

Sounds good!  Especially since they're still said to be rebuilding the chapter yes?  The vets taking the new recruits out to learn how it's done.

I'm hearing combi-meltas a lot so I think I'll go with them.  The good thing about combi weapons though is that you can justify mixing them up in a squad.  Meltas for cracking that tough target and Flamers to help punish anyone getting too close for comfort.
