Captain in 8th
« on: July 24, 2017, 07:36:11 PM »
Played my first few games of 8th with my Wolves. How are you guys building your captains in this edition?

I was using a pair of wolf claws, but the thunder hammer seems like it's going to option. I'd like to try running a frost axe, but not sure how it will do.

Just looking for other opinions and experiences so far.

I do not play Space Marines but I have played a couple of times against someone who ran this Captain:

Captain with Storm Bolter, Power Axe

He mostly used it to give rerolls to his various guys (he ran a lot of Plasma which does want to reroll 1s) and to add a bit of anti-infantry shooting or counter-assault. It seemed cheap and efficient at providing the Aura.

I gotta say it is pretty damned hard to beat a Captain w/Master Crafted Bolter and Relic Blade. He shoots well (the Dmg characteristic on the MC Bolter is *great!*), he fights well, and he's dirt cheap.

For a few points more, take a powerfist for some more strength, but coming in at a good bit under 100 points, that build above strikes me as a bargain.

Edit: Just realized the powerfist is actually 1 point *cheaper* than the Relic Blade (I had old 4th-7th edition PFist costs in my head). Still, the Relic blade lets you hit w/o any penalty, so a toss up as to whether that's worth the slightly lower strength.

Varies with what you are trying to do, the captain for me is a cheap anti 1 bubble for shooting and well the xeno blade is kind of nice :)

In the new codex the Power Fist is down to only x points vs the Relic Blade's x. That to me makes the Fist a far more desirable choice, especially on a character who can supply his own rerolls.

Please avoid posting the points costs for upgrades, it's against the copyright rules as outlined in forum rule 1 - Iris.

Indeed! Now it's nearly a no-brainer. Shame, actually, as I've always thought a big-ass sword is way cooler looking than a weirdly inflated hand.

Yeah, I always liked how Relic Blades looked. But on the bright side this means I have a use for the Captain Centos model I got last year, and this year's GW Birthday Primaris captain.

I might keep my dude with the big sword and just say it counts-as a powerfist. Lame, I know, but my captain looks so *cool.*

You could also just call it a power sword. You lose the strength bonus, but you save a lot of points too.

Yes, but it also is rather terrible.

Well, unless you trade it in for the chapter relic (Burning Blade?), but any melee weapon on a character that does 1 wound on a hit is awful.

Now, if they'd let him buy a mastercrafted power sword, that might be different...
