sustained assault
« on: January 18, 2002, 06:43:20 AM »
Okay, let's see if you can clear this up for me. An Exarch with sustained assault in close combat inflicts, for example, 3 hits. According to the rule, the Exarch gets 3 more attacks ( "For each close combat hit he inflicts, he may make an extra attack").
Now let's say out of those 3 extra attacks, the Exarch inflicts 2 hits. Does he:
a)get 2 more attacks (one for each hit), and keeps rolling untill he misses or
b)get just one more attack (because the rule says: "If an extra attack hits, then this allows him a futher attack" and not "for each extra attack that hits" and keeps rolling untill he misses.

Thanks.

hmmm...good question and yet another fine example of a need for an updated Eldar FAQ and clarification...

My reading of this is that any additional hits would result in another additional hit.  It is written to sound like an individual basis is in order.

"if AN extra attack hits" sounds like given an extra attack, if it hits, you get another attack.  If they had written if "ANY extra attack hits", then I'd say only one more additional hit.

This may also be yet another time when something is assumed (such as the English understanding of English vs the American understanding of English) that should not be...

My vote, each successful hit means a new attack

You need to read the entire description of Sustained Assault, not just the beginning.  Eldar Codex, Page 38, under the title "Sustained Assault"

"The Exarch keeps his wings in constant motion, darting from one foe to the next in a continuous attack.  For each close combat hit he inflicts, he may make an extra attack.  If an extra attack hits, then this allows him a further attack.  Keep rolling to hit until the Exarch misses.  Resolve to wound rolls and armor saves for each hit as normal."

This is pretty clear.  You keep rolling until you miss with all of your attacks.  That means if 3 attacks hit the first time, you roll 3 more dice.  If only 2 attacks hit the second time, you roll 2 more dice.  If one attack hits the third time, you roll one more dice.  If that one attack hits again, roll again.  If you roll really well, you can kill an entire squad in one round of combat.

Hope this clears up the confusion!

What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight — it's the size of the fight in the dog.
