The premise of this thread is simples: if you come across something that's cool, and you want to share it, feel free to post here, with a link (if it's on the web) or just write a post explaining what you want to share.
I'll go first:

Rap Battles of History are pretty great. I think my favorite is the Einstein-Hawking one - or the Beethoven-Bieber.

Tesla vs Edison vs. Tesly was also very well done. I actually had to visit a webside that explains references in songtexts to get them all.

The most expensive computer game pack ever? (http://www.game.co.uk/en/saints-row-iv-super-dangerous-wad-wad-edition-180208?pageSize=20&searchTerm=super-dangerous-wad-wad-edition)
How about the cheapest? (https://www.humblebundle.com/)
The Humble Bundle is actually pretty cool. If you donate more than $1, you get the keys for 6 games, most of which are on steam, but the odd one is only available on origin. If you donate more than the average (currently around $4.50), they add in two more games.
The bundle for right now is:
- Dead Space
- Burnout Paradise: The Ultimate Box
- Crysis 2
- Dead Space 3 (origin only)
- Mirror's Edge
- Medal of Honour
- Battlefield 3 (donate the average)
- Sims 3 + expansions (donate the average)
The idea is that because you are donating to charity, ideally you will donate more for it to be worth while. But if you are a cheap gamer, you can get 6 games for $1, 8 games for $5, and the total package of all 8 is priced around $215.
-
Humble Bundle also does a yearly ebook selection using the same method. You get to pick up some excellent material for every cheap even when over bidding to help the charities.

On the whole, I do prefer this song to that nonsense by Alan Thicke.

While I tend to agree that The Official Site for Alan Thicke (http://www.alanthicke.com/) is not a useful source for musical entertainment, I think you may have meant his offspring, Robin Thicke. ;)
EDIT: Upon further reflection, the idea of seeing Alan Thicke get twerked over by a starlet does fill me with a perverse sense of curiosity. It would certainly be something cool to see on the internet. Or at least morbidly eyebrow raising. Either way.

This video here is a musical remix of stuff that was said in an episode of a Let's Play show called Game Grumps (some of you may have seen it.) That way I'd be there when the machines finally turn on people, and the first Terminator is born. Seriously, people. Gladiator Robots always kill their masters. It's in every single sci-fi involving robots. Swift death is preferable to the miserable existence that follows the Robocolypse.
-
well if we take robot per the term indeed they kill there master most of the time, but what they have is more a power armor (kinda big) armed than actual robot, they are still piloted by human so not much risk of them turning against us yet :D

David Hasselhoff - True Survivor - from the soundtrack of the upcoming blockbuster "Kung Fury" (think FarCry: Blood Dragon in movie form, basically.)
Kung Fury is out, though they didn't get enough Kickstarter dough to make a feature length film. I'm sure most people lacked confidence that it was anything but a prank, maybe they'll get more money now to complete the movie now that the featurette has been published. As it stands, it's 31 minutes of bliss with a complete story arc:

I love that he wants the robots to punch each other.
I also think that's the most ridiculous thing ever.
-
Ridiculous, yes. But he's got a point. If you want humanoid shaped tanks to shoot at each other, just ditch the humanoid and shoot tanks at each other.
Melee combat would be a more entertaining. Power claws, buzz saws, cutting torches, pile drivers sending a spike into your opponent... that would be awesome. Plus that tests the robot's reflexes, power-to-weight, and so many more things than just thickness of armour and who bought a bigger gun.
-
Oh, I agree! But this statement:
If you want humanoid shaped tanks to shoot at each other, just ditch the humanoid and shoot tanks at each other.
Is (1) totally true and (2) why we will never, ever actually build humanoid fighting robots. I mean, except for fun.
-
Well, never say never. Humanoid warmachines do have some advantages over your basic tank. The biggest one is probably mobility. Tanks do not do well in mountain terrain, so having something that can bring the payload of a tank up a mountain by having the flexibility of a bipedal mount is probably something the military will look into.
The issue right now is that our level of technology is limits the production of mechs...

Tanks do not do well in mountain terrain, so having something that can bring the payload of a tank up a mountain by having the flexibility of a bipedal mount is probably something the military will look into.
The technology and equipment needed to keep it from falling down will always trump the advantages. I mean, hell, you can just make yourself a better armored helicopter or something. Walking upright is such a pain in the ass. There's a very good reason so few animals in nature do it.
Maybe if they made them quadrapedal--maybe then. I still think the technology to get a tank to do better in rough terrain would be a much smaller challenge than the technology needed to make it walk around on legs.
-
Also, the idea is to be low to the ground for added concealment. Having a walker is just another way of putting a giant "please shoot me" sign on your war machine. Physics will still screw you though, ground pressure for a walker soon gets to be highly disadvantages for a war machine. As we saw in WW II, even tanks have serious scale up issues soon enough.
-
let us dream that some day we have something that will work on two feet or more and be more efficient than a tank :) i don't think it's going to happen anytime soon but my manga/mecha fan heart is telling me he want to see those in live army ^^
-
And then an infantryman with a armour piercing weapon shoots a leg joint and ruins the entire beslubbering thing.
Granted, that's already a problem with wheels and treads, but at least the consequence there is "merely" immobility, and not falling over.
There is *one* advantage I could imagine, and that is as a kind of rapid, lightly armoured heavy weapons platform, acting in support of infantry and mech-inf units. And then there's the BigDog robot from DARPA, which I think looks promising, sure, it's just an automated pack mule, but honestly that is probably a lot more useful than giant robots constantly threatening to trip over due to ground pressure, exposed joints, complex (and thus error-prone) machinery and a high center of gravity.
I mean, the jerry-can revolutionized warfare, the Panzer VII Maus didn't.
-
But it may be more feasible to surround those vulnerable joints with proper armouring.
Anyways, the Japanese have accepted the challenge! So giant robot deathmatch is on!
-
More armour, less mobility, more logistical cost to run. Which is why we should all agree on Flying Death Drones.
-
Still more mobile than a tank.
Hey, you know what... stop beslubbering with my dreams of one day seeing a legitimate mech!
-
Still more mobile than a tank.
Well, no actually. Take a 40 tonne tank and compare it to a 40 tonne walker. The tank will be far more nimble. The Russians do beslubbering armoured ballet with theirs. It's physics and physics is a son of a be-atch.
Hey, you know what... stop beslubbering with my dreams of one day seeing a legitimate mech!
You'll get nothing and like it or you'll get twice as much nothing tomorrow. Sir_Godspeed's armour frames and cyberbots are far more interesting and likely. Also damn cool to watch in the videos.
-
do you not get the point of a dream perhaps >< it's a dream it's perfectly fine to like it hate it want it to happened without any real reason.
I expect that some day our ammunition will be take so far that the tank armor won't be of any use anymore, that's where i think walker might become an alternative because since anyway if you are it you go down, let's at least try to avoid the bullet before it hits you.
And man who needs a reason to see a giant robot on the battlefield, just for the coolneess is good enought.
-
Oh, yes--I think *modestly sized* walkers are possible. Armored frames, as Goodspeed suggests, or powered armor (like in District 9 or Avatar). Much bigger than that? No way.
I'm very sorry, GML. I really am. They *would* be cool.
-

Armour vs ammunition have been going at it for thousands of years. I doubt it'll stop anytime soon.
Defence goes like this:
Don't get seen.
Don't get hit.
Don't get hurt.
Don't stay dead.
Large walkers are just *very* obvious. John Ringo, before he went full crazy town, had a decent set of novels where he explained why mostly man sized powered armour was successful while other designs weren't and basically it comes down to not being obvious on the battlefield. Camouflage (electronic as well as material) only goes so far when you're going stomp stomp stomp about the place. His powered armour was still heavy enough to fall through floors as well if they didn't play close attention to what they were doing.
Which always made BattleTech so much fun. "I *can't* hit him sir! He's metres away!" ;)
-
I should add that while I don't think giant mechs will work in real life, I love them in fiction - even the more realistic type.
Keep that dream alive. :D
-
I still believe that part of the belief that mechs won't work is because of our current technology limits the idea.
75 years ago, people thought it wouldn't be possible for planes for go faster than the speed of sound.
120 years ago, people thought man would never fly.
150 years ago, shoulder mounted automatic weapons were not considered possible.
250 years ago, sailing a ship absent sails was thought to be impossible.
Technology advances, and what we currently believe is impossible may very well be the direction the future is headed. Hell, the fact that people are building these machines now only goes to show that there is interest in making them viable. As long as people continue to work on improving the designs, I think it is quite possible that we see a design that actually works in the next 50 years.
-
Granted, but they also believed that people could shapeshift, communicate with the dead and transform lead into gold easily, and achieve eternal life, so by the same logic a lot of what we believe might be possible might flat out be impossible or very hard.
-
Also, impossible to build is an entirely separate argument than saying they'd be tactically useless or redundant. :)
-
Also, impossible to build is an entirely separate argument than saying they'd be tactically useless or redundant. :)
I'm just saying that there is potential for it to work, it is just beyond our understanding as of this moment. And let's be honest, none of us are experts in the field of future military matters :P
Granted, but they also believed that people could shapeshift, communicate with the dead and transform lead into gold easily, and achieve eternal life, so by the same logic a lot of what we believe might be possible might flat out be impossible or very hard.
True, but people are working on designing machines that demonstrate the idea is feasible. Unlike the stuff you mentioned which was all found to not be possible, there is a hint of possibility here.

There's a movie of a guy burning his Dark Elf army. As in, with lighter fluid and a lighter. Lil' crazy in my books, but I couldn't stop once it started. Just roll down a little bit and you'll see the movie link.
-
Nice. That'll show them. Still, money where your mouth (or rather lighter) is.
-
Yeah, I watched that. Skipped over his ranting because I didn't care for the reasoning. Regardless of what they say, it makes no sense to me to burn stuff that you had bought and spent hours painting. Really strikes me as cutting off your nose to spite your face.
I mean, if you don't want it, at least put the amphetamine parrot up on ebay and make some money off it!
-
I was impressed by the dedication to his point of view. I mean, I'm pretty miffed at 40k right now, even considered [for like, an hour] selling my IG stuff. But burning it? That's mental. I honestly skipped through most of it. I mean, I've seen a fire before. There was just a certain... madness about it that I found compelling, and thought I'd share.
A deeply Imperial way of dealing with a problem. If you substituted promethium and heretics. :)
-
Well if was him even in rage i would not have burned eveything i mean 900 $ is not something I would laught at --' I would like to ask this guy, does he regret doing this now with a bit more take back on his doing ?

Architects crowdfund to build £1.85 billion replica of Minas Tirith in England (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/film/lord-of-the-rings/minas-tirit-crowdfund/)
A group of architects want 2 billion pounds to build a life sized copy of Minas Tirith. They've raised some money but nothing to that magnitude, of course.
'Orcs' launch campaign to destroy Minas Tirith as architects' (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/film/lord-of-the-rings/orcs-launch-crowdfunding-campaign-to-destroy-minas-tirith/)
Now, the Orcs have started to crowd fund to destroy the above life sized copy of Minas Tirith.

I got excited while looking through a thread in another 40k forum to see someone there link to an old thread here where someone was building a bit of terrain out of sprues. Really cool project, but sadly no finished results. I used to spend a lot of time here, almost none on other 40k sites. Since things are so slow here now, I've resorted to other sites, but miss this one and the activity there used to be. So it was cool to see 40konline being mentioned outside of 40konline.

I came across a cool conversion of the Storm Talon, myself. It's converted to a walker, and honestly kinda looks better as one, due to its excessively bulky frame. Actually, come to think of it, it reminds me of the Goliath from Starcraft 1.

I just tried this and I really like it. It's a great find, thanks :).
-
So I went to Songfacts. I put in "Angel" by Sarah McLachlan. I'm a non-religious person, but have always found the song to be beautiful and assumed it had [positive] religious connotations.
Turns out, it's about a member of the Smashing Pumpkins OD'ing on Heroin. The "Angel" is the Heroin, making the addict feel better. Furthermore, Mrs McLachlan is a bit of a militant de-theist / negative agnostic. Which is fine, but just shows the assumptions I'd made about the song and it's writer that I was surprised.
It's probably the most "beautiful" song I've ever heard, happened to hear it on the way home today and so I looked it up. I guess that's the crazy part about songs. It's beautiful. It's incredibly dark. It's an addict's hell and a human's hope. I felt cheated, at first when I learned what it's about, but a half-hour later I'm feeling better about knowing the "truth" behind the song. I can now enjoy it on different levels.
I was initially uncomfortable with something I'd considered "sacred" in my own way being a kind of tongue-in-cheek counter point to the religious imagery. Kind of like finding out a love song is actually a song about a stalker [Every Breath You Take - The Police] and finding out it's super popular at weddings.
But then I remembered it's totally something I would do, in her space, though without the anger at religion in general. So maybe not that particular celestial being, but... anyhow. Rambling.
I blame it on the concussion of being kicked in the head by that discovery. So... Thanks? to you, Master Squeaker, for my current disturbed state of mind.

Curiosity made the cat question his limited fandom of Sarah McLachlan. And again, I'm somewhat admiring the cold, vicious... detachment? from events. Such utterly incorrect assumptions I'd made of the person behind the music.
Hmmm... I'm going to have to see if we still have those CD's. I kind of want to listen to them now. Listen for the darker undertones.

This (https://www.facebook.com/WarhammerFairwayRoad/posts/1552640685036758) is an event that is going on right now at my LGW. The manager there is absolutely stellar at building a community around the store, and this really shows it.
People were coming out of the woodwork to help plan this, and I had to get on board because why the hell not. He is getting the Blood Bowl team from me, but because I am not able to make it down to the store today he gets to play against the manager and will get a letter from me after they play the game that tells him the team is his.

He is getting the Blood Bowl team from me,
You MONSTER.
This is the letter I wrote for the kid to be handed to him after the game:
Cole,
By now you’re aware that Ryan told the store community that today was your birthday. Well... the party anyways. I had planned to come down and be the person to run you through a game of Blood Bowl and get you addicted to yet another fantastic GW game, but circumstances prevented me from making it.
He also told me you were in air cadets, and I believe I was in the store when you came in during Tag Days (tsk tsk tsk lol). As someone that has been through the cadet organization when I was younger, and who has come back as an instructor, I think it is great that you are participating in such a great program. My understanding is that you were a LAC this year, which means it won’t be long before you reach Sergeant. Whatever you do, stick with cadets and see it through to the end. The skills you learn there will stay with you your entire life.
Anyways, I wanted to say happy birthday, and I hope you enjoyed the game of Blood Bowl against Ryan. I know starting a new game like that while also feeding your Warhammer addiction is tough, so if you really enjoyed the game and want to keep playing it you can. The human team that you played used to be mine and I lent it to the store for Ryan to have on hand for people to use. Keep it! The team is yours! Repaint it however you like and I hope to see you out playing with them again soon.
Think of it as a blessing from the Dark Gods, Nuffle (the fickle Blood Bowl god), the Emperor, or Sigmar. Which ever you prefer, lol.
Happy Birthday, again, and I hope you had fun today.

@Irisado- Yeah that cosplay is wicked cool. I saw the Cosplay photoshoot on FB as well it was really cool. I really like the DoW Eldar aesthetic. It reminds of the Eldar Rogue Trader art where there is almost a "Space Jokey" aesthetic from Alien to it. Really wish they'd put a little more of the creepy back into the Eldar designs from time to time. I wouldn't go completley in that direction but a nice nod to that every once and awhile would be cool.

Thought you guys might be interested to see what I am playing at my local GW. These series of quotes were taking from the Facebook group associated with the store, but we are just in the process of planning it right now. I have even brought up the idea with the manager about possibly looking into getting some GW support, maybe even some White Dwarf coverage.
Anyways, to the epic madness!
I'm curious how many legions are represented at the store. Whether they are loyalist or traitor, 30k or 40k. I'd actually like to compile a list and if we have a broad enough representation, maybe we can organize an epic traitor v loyalist throw down.
(just looking for the original legions, not successor chapters)
Loyalists
---------------
- Dark Angels
- Space Wolves
- Blood angels
- Ultramarines
- Iron Hands
- Imperial Fists
- White Scars
- Salamanders
- Raven Guard
Traitors
-------------
- Death Guard
- Iron Warriors
- Night Lord
- World Eaters
- Sons of Horus / Black Legion
- Word Bearers
- Alpha Legion
- Thousand Sons
- Emperors Children
So... yeah... lots of heretics in this community.
As per my last post, we were able to find enough people to say that we are able to get all of the founding legions represented at the store.
The next step is to find out what the point spread is between them. So, because the other post has had quite a large and confusing comment history, I'm going to tally total points here. Leave a comment with the Legion you have and roughly how many points you can field. I will update the tallies as the answers come in
Loyalists -> 73,190
---------------
- Dark Angels -> 28,400pts - 5
- Space Wolves -> 11,350pts - 5
- Blood angels -> 11,000pts - 2
- Ultramarines -> 4400pts - 2
- Iron Hands -> 3540pts -2
- Imperial Fists -> 4000pts - 2
- White Scars -> 2000pts - 1
- Salamanders -> 3500pts - 1
- Raven Guard -> 5000pts - 1
- 21 players
Traitors - 29,150
-------------
- Death Guard -> 6500pts - 4
- Iron Warriors -> XXXXXXX has Infinite!
- Night Lord -> 3800pts - 2
- World Eaters -> 3850pts - 3
- Sons of Horus -> 2000pts - 1
- Word Bearers -> 4000pts+ - 2
- Alpha Legion -> 2500pts - 1
- Thousand Sons -> 1000pts - 1
- Emperors Children -> 5500pts - 2
- 16 players
So it is safe to say that we can definitely pull off this mega battle. That has been clearly demonstrated. The next step we need to take in planning this day / weekend of pure awesomeness is to work out who will be playing what legions.
We can work out how many points per side later, but for now I just need people to sign up for which legion they wish to play. Please remember that you are selecting only one legion and every legion must be represented by at least one person.
Players that only have a single Legion will have priority for playing that Legion. If this applies to you, please indicate so that I am able to keep track of that.
-
Damn man... I'm so jealous that sounds legendary! Its nigh on impossible to get a game going down here. Fantastic stuff man... make sure you let us know how that epic day(s) of gaming go. Snap some pics if possible!

-
Oh wow, Please keep us updated on this! Pictures would be absolutely amazing!
-
I had to swing by the regional police HQ to get a background check done and saw one of the coolest things I have seen in a very long time.

The angle is a bit bad, but across the hood of the car they had written "Serving With Pride."
Now that is policing done right!
-
Nice. I've still got a picture of the gAy-TM that was in Auckland my last visit back to the colonies.

Just wanted to post an update on this one:
WE'VE DONE IT!!!
Every legion of Space Marines have at least one person on board to play! You know what that means?
IT'S ON!!!!
I'm out right now, but keep tuned because I'm going to start getting this glorious game organized in the next couple of days!
I got my last two legions confirmed this afternoon; having been waiting on Salamanders and Raven Guard. Now to hammer out the details and set a date / points value.
-
I'll just leave this here for anyone who hasn't seen it yet:

The store manager just posted his own guidelines for the game:
Also we are going to do a 16x4 I think. I might set up a camera to constantly film and then edit later for the highlights.
But a few ground rules for this many people and filming.
ABSOLUTELY NO SWEARING.
You'll screw the video up. And make me angry.
No being anti social to customers walking around watching. Talk to them. Explain. Show off.
No proxies. Do this right. Counts as is fine.
No non GW.
I want shouting. I want the heavens to rain fire. I want you guys to lose and be happy to lose because you're taking part in something extremely cinematic.
Guys, we were just the number 1 store in North America for new stores for December. Christmas season. Let's close out the 2016 fiscal year (which ends in may) with the biggest battle a GW has seen in a long long time.
I posted a poll in the store's Facebook group to get some feedback, and it looks like everyone is on board with 1500pts per person. I tallied up the number of people per side, and it looks like the game will be around 19,500pts per side at least. I may just round it up to 20,000 to have a nice round number.
-
Really not sure how you'll be able to play a proper game without swearing. Seems unnatural.
-
I was thinking after the match is it back to being anti-social to the customers again.
-

I know I'm not the only one who is going to struggle with that one.
I was thinking after the match is it back to being anti-social to the customers again.
Actually, the community at this place is very open and welcoming with customers. It's not like the old GW stores which were literally holes in the wall tossed into the darkest corner of the mall.
-
Sounds awesome, GML. Hope everyone actually carries through with their promise, would hate to see someone drop out in the last moment.
Also, Pax: that was *hilarious*. Best impersonation of Trump I've seen yet. Tremendous.

Legions II and XI, all records purged. All known members also purged. Their names are stricken as are their souls.

I didn't really think otherwise GML it just struck me as funny that the store owner saw it necesary to post a guideline to ensure that you were all nice to the customers.

I didn't notice that part of his post lol.

I also learned, that Diesels Character in "The last Witchhunter" is based upon a 800 years old Witchhunter called Kaulder, Diesel used to play in D&D as a teenager, which is really cool :D
Now where to find a film studio to produce the story of a dwarfen monk with a tragic backstory, who thwarted evil countless times while getting roaring drunk (i never said he was a good monk)?!

I love the concept and most of the execution. But the part that bothers me is that he has black sticks extending out to where the supports are for the models. I think it would have looked better if he had made those clear or something.
I know... begging and choosing, right?
-
G'day GML!
Can see why he/she would prefer the strength of rods over clear plastic, however, painting them a warp kind of blue would have given them that exhaust trail feel. They haven't gotten round to painting the actual models, so maybe painting the rods are on the cards as well... Be well!

Many countries are doing it. Utter waste of money, IMO. Especially those countries not bothering to fund their health services in the first place but hey, here's some flight hours.
-
Way I look at it is that it's a few million from the defence budget when a lot of the military is standing down. Helping keep up the morale of the people isn't a bad thing.
I like to think Canada is doing a decent job looking after people. So having these flyovers as something to look forward to isn't a bad thing
-
I'm also skeptical of how feasible it would be to take money from a specific air force program and transfer it to healthcare services, so it's a bit of a false dilemma, imho.
That being said: yes, several countries should very much reconsider their healthcare budgets after this.

That's honestly a good thing. Translating the series as-written would be spectacularly boring, as the whole thing is just a series of scenes with two or three dudes in a room sipping Scotch and talking about the sweeps of history and politics. Pretty dull theatre.
I think it looks like something actually out of the distant future (something the books lacked a lot of) and they seem to have spared no expense. There's no way I'm getting an AppleTV subscription just for this show, but yeah--good for them. I hope it's good.

Thankfully, my girlfriend has an Apple+ subscription. I would be willing to pay for the service, anyways, to see this story come to life. The Foundation has always been my favourite Sci-Fi series.
I'm eager to get a closer look at this interpretation of Asimov's work. Also have to keep in mind that the general idea of what the distant future will look like has evolved over the years, so they have to adjust what the mental imagery from 70 years ago.
My question is are they going to stay true to the books like they (more or less) did with Game of Thrones? If they do, are they stopping at just the trilogy (Second Foundation), or including the later books as well (Foundation's Edge / Foundation and Earth)? Or is this just going to be something that is based around the idea of the books?

Well
The books covered the far future fairly well I would say. Hyper-video, three-dimensional communication, Jump travel, flying taxis, a 75,000,000 square mile city covering an entire planet to name a few.
Also have to keep in mind that the general idea of what the distant future will look like has evolved over the years, so they have to adjust what the mental imagery from 70 years ago.
I am happy with the visuals, it is the tone of the trailer that seems at odds with my mental imagery. The tone of the trailer is quite bleak and Hari Seldon comes across as business like and 'hard'. The books, that I finished rereading at the end of last year, had a more upbeat feel.

That is a good question and as per Wyddr's comment I suppose I would have to guess that the series will be based on the idea of the books.
-
The books, that I finished rereading at the end of last year, had a more upbeat feel.
In their entirety, sure. It's a very positive community building, hope for the future in the face of adversity sort of story. But... if you're approaching it from the ground without the context of how it ends, the premise is horrifying. The total collapse of galactic civilization and a thousand year dark age?
I think the tone of the trailer pretty well captures the way most people would feel with that information. Like, look at the world right now. Just the thought of that sort of systemic collapse fills people with dread, but if someone, a very well respected expert, told you it was a certainty? I think the 'Impending Apocalypse' vibe would be totally appropriate.
I'm definitely on board with giving it a shot, in any case. Between Foundation, and the new Dune, my Sci-Fi boner has been strong these last few weeks.
-
I think the dark tone in the trailer is a contemporary trend thing. BWAAAAHP is basically a scifi trailer cliche since like 2010, but it keeps being used.
I love the set design, it is reminiscent of the 70s cover art, with its sleek high-concept feel to it, and that's definitely what I wanted from a Foundation series (aesthetics alone does a lot for me, I'm somewhat ashamed to admit).
"Connecting humanity through technology... that's definitely something Apple is about, and it's something Asimov was promoting."
Ugh, that corporate cringe. Very awkwardly shoehorned in.
Got a weirdly lot of downvotes... Does anyone know why? Is it because it's Apple behind it? Some scifi grognards not liking the direction? Or is it because it's got women and brown people in it? (The latter would sadly not surprise me).
-
As a young 'un, I really liked Foundation, because of its idealism. I liked the idea that in the face of the end of a civilization and the fall of an empire, hope could still be had. I think I even more liked the idea that society and the great arc of history could on some level be understood and analyzed, and that, if we were smart, we could shape events to do better in the future. Part of why I pursued an economics minor in college was that it felt like that was the closest we could get to Asimov's dream.
-

Not just in their entirety, the first book in particular has a very upbeat vibe.

Just the thought of that sort of systemic collapse fills people with dread, but if someone, a very well respected expert, told you it was a certainty? Except that isn't what happens in Foundation. The 'truth' of the empire's collapse is hidden from the masses and in exchange for his life and silence Seldon is given the planet Terminus.
Also Seldon wasn't a well respected expert other than amongst his peers.
I love the set design, it is reminiscent of the 70s cover art, with its sleek high-concept feel to it, and that's definitely what I wanted from a Foundation series (aesthetics alone does a lot for me, I'm somewhat ashamed to admit).
Funnily enough there appears to be a lot of people lamenting the fact that the look of the trailer isn't reminiscent of Chris Foss' art work.
I think I even more liked the idea that society and the great arc of history could on some level be understood and analyzed, and that, if we were smart, we could shape events to do better in the future.
For me this is the biggest 'hook' of the Foundation. Psychohistory is so believable that it is hard to understand why it hasn't become a real science. It is easy to believe that the behaviour of the human masses and their reaction to social and economic stimuli can be mathematically predicted.
Edit:
I read this a while ago and have just managed to find it it again.
To me cliodynamics (https://aeon.co/essays/if-history-was-more-like-science-would-it-predict-the-future) reads very much like a fledgling Psychohistory
-
They are very likely going to drag the books out as long as they can manage. I would suspect the whole first season to only focus on what happens on Trantor (The Psychohistorians part of the first book), hence the bleak feeling. Hope isn't there yet.
As for my "not futuristic enough" comment, the "future" of the books is basically 1950s America with scifi technology bolted on. They still use paper newspapers. They still use metallic currency (even though they barely have metal). They smoke cigars (which might come from Vega, but are really just cigars). They use nuclear fission to power everything. Men wear suits, women wear dresses. One guy takes a shower with water in his spaceship. Another guy has a calculator (like, a basic scientific calculator) on his hip and challenges another guy to do math in his head. The people are "amazed" by 3-dimensional images appearing from nowhere in a theatre (HOW IS IT POSSIBLE!?). Every dude has a secretary who doesn't get to speak.
It *isn't* the future in any real meaningful setting sense. They've got gadgets and gizmos and the mega-cities, but it's transparently the postwar US. Asimov barely bothers to hide it because his purpose in those books is not (and never was) to imagine the future. His purpose in those books is to show American postwar optimism, capitalism, and democracy as the positive, inevitable destiny of history. The USA is the Foundation, the crumbling Galactic Empire is postwar Europe, and all the barbarous kingdoms are all the third world nations the USA has to come in and teach about democracy and advanced technology.
Retelling that story as written is not only unspeakably tone-deaf to the current state of the world, but also extremely dated and essentially irrelevant. So, yeah, AppleTV will probably change it somehow, hopefully for the better.

It is easy to believe that the behaviour of the human masses and their reaction to social and economic stimuli can be mathematically predicted.
Well, easy to believe unless you've looked at the past of social science. There've been several tries to find "social laws", but what you end up with, in the best case scenario, are statistical probabilities of varying degrees of predictive usefulness. Economics is perhaps the most mathematical, and even they tend to grossly exaggerate the certainty of their predictions. Other disciplines that have grown out of similar attempts is demographical projections, urban planning, and so on.
Computing power increases, of course, but that's not really the bottleneck, the bottleneck is methodological rigour. Data retrieval, avoiding feedback (self-fulfilling prophecies), spuriousness, ethics, etc.
The allure of nomothetic (law-seeking) social science will always be there, because we tend to view natural science (and perhaps physics in particular - or rather mathematics in its pure form, perhaps) as the ultimate "pinnacle" of the scientific endeavor. The problem is that there are some serious issues when the waking self attempts to study the waking self reflexively yey objectively.
tl;dr: it's an intriguing concept, but there are some serious, profound problems with it that goes beyond "we need more complex models".

The potential for a flying car in our lifetime, surely that is cool!
Check out this link to Urban Aeronautics: CityHawk (https://www.israel21c.org/israeli-made-flying-cars-may-be-floating-into-our-future/) and see what you think.

I'm glad they're not looking at making it available for public usage just yet. I don't trust other people in conventional cars that only move in two axis. There's no way I would trust Joe 6-pack with a third axis of movement!
-
To make it even remotely safe for widespread use, it would need to be equipped with some kind of failsafe system in case of engine failure. I have no idea what that would be, but without it, you have one failed engine rotor crashing into three other flying cars then spiraling into half a city block. No thank you.

IMHO, "flying cars" (or just small personal helicopters, basically) won't become common to the public until after self-driving is a safe and comprehensive, which in itself is a long ways off.

When it comes to flying vehicles I think safety is a given. The FAA, CAA and EASA will make sure that safety is a priority.
Similar vehicles to the CityHawk use vehicle recovery ballistic parachutes.
Other than scale I don't see that much more of a risk between the CityHawk and all the other personsl flying machines that already exist. Microlights, powered paragliders, hang gliders and powered parachutes to name a few. They all have risks involved.
I get what you are on about though. When it comes to flying in inhabited areas safety becomes paramount.

Whilst the idea of a personal flying car is a sci-fi trope in reality I doubt it will ever be the case that a flying car will be as ubiquitous as a normal car. For one thing the cost and time of a pilots licence is beyond most people.
As the CityHawk article says the aim is for an Uber type vehicle and I guess this will be the future of flying cars.
I really can't imagine millions of personal flying cars in the air.

So, until fully automated vehicles are a thing, flying cars should never happen. Never. Not in a million years.
As a military pilot that spent the previous 9 years of his life flying in the low level environment, I can't begin to tell you how much fear I'd have of Joe Public smashing around in flying cars.
Microlights/Paragliders etc are all required to operate in specific areas from which they mustn't stray; however they very much do stray and I've had a few near misses with them.
On top of that, I've seen how the public act with drones; again, whilst most fly responsibly, many do not. This causes massive potential danger to any light or military aviation...let alone the risk to other flying car users.
So yeah...I know we want the Sci Fi utopia we've seen in games and cinema; we're a long way from being there technologically and IMHO, even further away from being ready as far as personal responsibility is concerned.

That's the thing though Looshkin, I don't believe it will ever 'Joe public' that will be piloting any imagined flying cars. It will always be licensed piolts. So just as pilots don't go smashing about in light aircraft or personal flying machines I doubt the piolts of flying cars would either.
As I said the biggest hurdle faced by flying cars is the legislation that will allow them to fly in inhabited areas.

If you're correct, then it's less of an issue. There is a reason that pilot training, both civil and military, is one of the most demanding and scrutinised training systems around. With that, though, if it were to be licensed pilots only, I just can't see where the customer base would be. The same as the helicopter market currently?
If it were licensed pilots only, I can see safety systems being the biggest hurdle...but given the cost to train as a pilot, it would only be niche consumers with a demand for a flying car service, or the very wealthy who can afford what would be expensive training and very expensive hardware.
In short...leave it until until it can fly itself and do so safely with no additional risk to life than what a helicopter currently provides.
-

I suppose it all depends on what you consider to be expensive. Most of the existing flying vehicles, other than drones and models, require some form of formal training and most require a licence. Even a microlight pilot has to obtain a licence and complete thirty hours of flight training. Would you consider a microlight owner wealthy?
In many ways self-flying aircraft already exist as most of Airbus' & Boeing's aircraft can already take off, cruise and land automatically.
As for the customer base even the makers of the CityHawk don't see it as anything more than just a taxi and a vehicle for the emergency services.
I don't know about you, but I can't really imagine a future where everyone owns their own flying cars. Our airspace just couldn't cope with that kind of volume.
-

starwars, 5th element, back to the future... all basically the same concept, each "lane way" had its own altitude that effectively stacks, with areas to rise or lower into the other lanes. Traffic would flow better than we currently do with our roads. You couldn't have "traffic control" like we currently do at airports though.
But yes, despite how stupid it is to get drunk, high or sleep deprived, and try to drive/ride people still do it... even airline pilots have been caught doing those things.. so yeah it would have to be an automated system to avoid disasters..
-
This isn't even taking into account the frankly *stupid* amount of energy this will cost. Even with some pretty damn efficient electrical engines, they amount of energy needed to keep something afloat in air (especially something that is about as aerodynamic as a slighty rounded rock) is, uh, A LOT.
-

QFT
I mean, why the hell don't we just pursue better lighter-than-air transportation options, honestly. If you want flying cars, what you really want are just Yhwh-condemneded balloons. Solves a metric ton of the problems right then and there--cheap, safe, low energy, reliable. All that's left is the density issue (balloons take up a lot of space).
I don't want flying cars. Personal airships? Yes, please.

Air traffic isn't just controlled around airports though. The airspace of a country is controled everywhere. In many ways you have just described the existing method of air traffic control as height is the way that our airways is controlled. Even so called uncontrolled airspace has ceiling limit that users can't fly above.
As I have said I honestly think the biggest hurdle faced by flying cars would be the ability to fly over built up areas as presently there isn't much that is allowed to.
But yes, despite how stupid it is to get drunk, high or sleep deprived, and try to drive/ride people still do it... even airline pilots have been caught doing those things.. so yeah it would have to be an automated system to avoid disasters..
Automated or not I am not sure I would like to see our skies full of vehicles wherever I looked.

Erm the CityHawk runs on a hydrogen fuel cell. It doesn't get much more efficient (pound for pound) than that.

All airspace is divided up by level of control. So airways and airfields have the most stringent controls upon them.
There is a heck of a lot of 'Class G' airspace though. To operate in class G, the aircraft doesn't have to be talking to anyone. They don't have to have flight plans. They don't have to have specific equipment that allows other airspace users to be able to 'see' and avoid them (Traffic Collision Avoidance Systems).
Essentially, it can be the Wild West...the only reason it isn't is the relatively limited number of users.
I'm not sure about the US and other countries, but in the UK, military aircraft aren't allowed below 2000' over a built up area, unless that built up area falls in an approach or departure lane. We are also not allowed to fly at low level within 0.5nm of towns over a certain size (basically, if it has a hard, black line border on a 1/250000 scale map. Permission to overfly built up areas is granted for things like medical or police helicopters.
So in essence...any introduction of large amounts of new airspace users would have to result in very stringent rules being placed upon their use. Users would likely have to undergo training and periodic checks to maintain a license. ATC would be impossible on a scale seen in the likes of Blade Runner or 5th Element.
So yeah...it's a can of worms that I don't think the most optimistic aerial vehicle developers have necessarily looked at enough.
-

It would be a whole lot more efficient to just shove that fuel cell into a regular car, or basically anything else that isn't punching against gravity.

Yes it would, but that doesn't deliver a flying car.

I am fairly sure that I read somewhere that airships are still a thing. Don’t hold your breath though as helium is bloody expensive to produce and fast running out.
I would love to live in a world where the speed of an airship was acceptable for day to day living.
-

NASA was testing one a few years back, but that was about it. Not very much has been put into them (particularly as relates to speed) and it stands to reason it could be a fruitful area of investigation.
But yeah, helium is something of a bottleneck not easily avoided. I would argue they would still be more practical and achievable than anything resembling a "flying car." There's just no need or call for such an object. It's probably more fruitful to call them "better helicopters" or "big drones" and at least then you're more accurately describing the vehicle in question.
-
That's a good point actually Wyddr. How important is the 'car' aspect of a flying car. As you imply, if you have a vehicle that can take off and land wherever you like then why bother with a road.
-
I was mostly arguing the fact that "car" is associated with personal use as a conveyance, rather than only by commercial and government concerns for business purposes. Nobody really takes a helicopter to the market and nobody would bother shipping their packages by personal drone - it's inefficient and unwieldy to do so.
Given that, as we keep pointing out, flying "cars" as such are impractical and unlikely to ever exist, you certainly are going to still need roads.
If you really, honestly want to talk about improved personal transportation, you should probably not focus on the "flying" part and start focusing on how you can better improve mass transit systems to obviate the need for personal vehicles like cars.
-
mass transit systems to obviate the need for personal vehicles like cars.
Mass transit systems are agents for nurgle.
On a more serious note, air space is easier to scale and potentially more cost effective than road systems, at least for the public purse, it'll cost a lot more to own though. A lot of SCiFi envisioned these as options when there are huge volumes of populations, but they also assume very similar working conditions a lot of the time.
Given our current tech, you can see many jobs not needing to be done on site, or even with human labour. It is plausible that more jobs will become "work from home" positions with limited or no office time. Retail shopping spaces may eventually fall away to online delivery systems, even the delivery could be limited to, food, clothes, 3d printing material and the odd items that's not printable in our life times, that could reduced even further should startrek's replicator tech come into play.
So the _need_ for flying cars might never show up, but hey coolness factor ;)
Given that, as we keep pointing out, flying "cars" as such are impractical and unlikely to ever exist, you certainly are going to still need roads.
This depends on the design, helicopters are not a great way way of getting around due to their size and how they are controlled, so the infrastructure for them becomes a problem, eg you couldn't have a multi-level parking station like we have for cars. But a car like those in the 5th Element, suddenly they are very practical and could have similar parking stations where you just fly into each level.
-

But a car like those in the 5th Element, suddenly they are very practical and could have similar parking stations where you just fly into each level.
Part of the point here is that the design is the problem. There is simply no way to get around that the energy needed to keep an object that is heavier than the air up in the air is vastly, vastly greater than the energy needed to move things along the ground. Barring magical anti-gravity technology (don't hold your breath), there is no way to make flying conveyances similar to cars and also have them more affordable than cars (except maybe - maybe balloons).
The decrease in centralized living space you describe (where we don't need to commute as much, etc.) only makes cars better - you need fewer roads, they are easier to maintain, and congestion on those roads becomes a thing of the past. You don't need the infinitely scalable nature of the "sky" anymore, save maybe over long distances, since you can still reach higher speeds up in the sky (and then we're talking about replacing airplanes, and I could certainly see the argument for small, cheap, drone-piloted airplanes replacing large airliners over most flight patterns. But, again, not cars, not privately owned, and not being used in congested airspace).
We are never going to develop a network of privately owned, independently operated flying vehicles that operate in urban areas for the purpose of short-range travel. In other words: the operative definition of a "car" will never apply to any such vehicle. Driving on the ground works just fine and stands to only work better if things decentralize. What we will probably see is delivery drones of some kind and probably more compact helicopters of some fashion, but those will only be used for commercial or government purposes, as I said above, since they'll either be too small to be of use as a vehicle or too expensive to own.
The only instance in which flying cars make any degree of sense is in an environment in which travel along the ground is impossible or so impractical to make forcing an object like that up in the air easier than just building and maintaining a road. So, exclusively vertical environments or places where the terrain and/or weather is so hazardous that road maintenance is completely impractical. If we want flying cars, then, we're going to have to look to establishing cloud-colonies on Venus first.
-

Leisure/entertainment is also a possibility.
Someone might own a AI-assisted "flying car" for the same reason people own a boat or jetski today.
That presupposes a lot of advances in self-driving safety, new legal regulations, and lots of other stuff, though.
Keep to driving them over open land, preferably.
-
One thing this conversation has brought to mind is that a lot of our view on the possibilities and practicalities of flying cars is based on our current knowledge of technology.
With our current technology, are flying cars possible? Yes. Practical? No. But look at so many technological advances that have happened that made things impractical into practical. In 1946 we knew that breaking the sound barrier was possible, but didn't know how to do it in a practical sense until the X-1 project. 30 years ago, we knew self driving cars were possible, but we didn't know how to make them practical.
Now, flying cars are possible, but they aren't practical. I think give them 15 to 20 years and technology might develop in power and design that could possibly make them a practical idea.

Breaking the sound barrier isn't a bad example. They tried making it a mass transit thing, but the price just wasn't worth the benefit. Nowadays sonic booms are relegated mostly to the military and other highly specialized areas.
We could be totally wrong, of course, like with someone predicting that private computers wouldn't ever be a thing, but on the other hand it would be weird to make future predictions based on wild fabulations.

It is funny you mention supersonic travel as a Concorde replacement called the Overture (https://boomsupersonic.com/xb-1) is being developed right now

First, a bit of context.
The Royal Canadian Navy is pursuing the option of changing their junior enlisted ranks to better reflect the state of the navy in a more gender neutral manner.
Right now, the ranks are Ordinary / Able / Leading / Master Seaman. They reached out to the Navy, as well as the public, with a poll to find what would be the preferred rank system going forward. Whether they changed the ranks from Seaman to Sailor, or switch to a Sailor 1st grade type system.
The posts on social media have been plagued by toxicity. So, the Deputy Commander of the Navy made a post on Facebook (that I'm sure will also come down through official channels) that not only condemns the negativity, but makes clear that the man has zero beslubbers to give on the matter any more.
There is no questioning where he stands on the matter. Statements like the one he made make me proud to wear the same uniform!
Without further ado...
Deputy Commander of the Royal Canadian Navy here. I have been made aware of the discourse occurring on on-line forums since we adopted our rank-change initiative, and I apologize for not chiming in earlier but frankly I needed a minute to come to terms with some of the comments that have been posted. First off, I would like to say that in my 33 years of service, I have had the privilege to work alongside the most incredible cohort of talented and professional sailors, who represent the diverse backgrounds that our great country is made of. I am proud to serve alongside the many different women, men, trans and non-binary members who bravely don the RCN uniform in order to serve our country and defend the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
This is why I strongly support our Rank Change Initiative, as I believe it is long overdue that ALL Royal Canadian Navy processes and policies, including our Ranks, reflect, honour and recognize the service and sacrifice made by ALL of our SAILORS. I would like to thank those of you who have provided constructive feedback and respectful dialogue on this issue, as these kinds of consultations are critical to designing an RCN that is fit for the sailors of the future.
To those of you who have made hateful, misogynistic and racist comments, I am shocked that you think that your comments would be acceptable, and that you are not able to recognize that those you are disparaging are the very people dedicating their lives to afford you the freedom to comment. These comments serve as a reminder of our need to call out cowardly attacks such as these, and remind us also that we should take every opportunity to show support for minority and marginalized groups.
To those of you currently serving with these beliefs, I would like to emphatically state you have no place in our Navy. If you cannot live by or support the values of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, then you cannot defend them. Should any serving Royal Canadian Navy Sailors have concerns or questions about this initiative and why this is considered a priority for our organization (and would like to engage in constructive discussion on the topic), please contact me directly.
Yours Aye,
Rear-Admiral Chris Sutherland

Alright, i was wondering who has checked out the Dune trailer yet, and what the thoughts were.
1) It looks amazing! The best adaptation yet, I'd wager.
2) It tracks almost exactly to this, which is hilarious: How To Make A Blockbuster Movie Trailer - YouTube (https://youtu.be/KAOdjqyG37A)
3) I have been and remain just...so over Dune. I mean, it's a very good book, but the story is so old now to have become almost a cliche.
-
I loved it! It feels like it hit all the notes right, and the director has an amazing track record AND has been a Dune-fan since he was 10, so I'm not sure if they could've found a better fit.
-
3) I have been and remain just...so over Dune. I mean, it's a very good book, but the story is so old now to have become almost a cliche.
Yup. See where they go with this but the book is a bit stale now.
-
I haven't read the book since middle school, so I don't mind. This is going to be super subjective though.
-
Alright, i was wondering who has checked out the Dune trailer yet, and what the thoughts were.
I found the trailer to be a bit dull and the only part that resonated with me was the sandworms. I haven't read Dune (the first book) since I was fourteen and all I can remember is stillsuits, spice, Fremen and sandworms. The trailer doesn't gel with my fading impression of the book, so if nothing else the trailer has got me thinking about reading the book again.
-
Do the opposite. See the movie in some format then reread the book. See what they may improve or what they ignored first.
-
I've neither read the book nor seen the original film, so I plan to follow this sequence.
-
I know nothing of dune, probably won't get around to reading the book. But, that trailer rocks! I can't wait to see this movie!
-
The book is good! Really good, even!
But nobody has to read it! If you know anything about space opera in the last 45 years, you know plenty about Dune. You won't be lost. Hell, a good chunk of the movie will seem derivative (hey, isn't that Avatar? Hey, isn't that Star Wars? Hey, isn't that The Wheel of Time? Hey, isn't that Game of Thrones? The answer is yes, yes it is).
-

You'll really need to see the old film later on as it is hilarious. It's just so over the top and unintentionally silly at times it's a classic. The cast list is also rather impressive.

I can get that. It's like watching Seinfeld for the first time after you've watched 30+ years of sitcoms. You're not likely to see a lot of new jokes. I speak from experience.

This will be easy. They show it almost every week on one television channel or other over here, especially at the moment.

GW has actually picked up a number of the great animators that are doing fan videos and are giving them official support. The guy that did Astartes got picked up as an example.

I was excited when they got the guy who did helsreach last year, now I'm extra stoked. Definitely a golden age of 40k.

This is awesome. Face of Neptune appears in the waves (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-57770547.amp)

That's really cool.
Though he's a bit far away from the ol' Mediterranean.

Well surely a God takes no heed of mortal boundaries.

Found an old fallout shelter on a property.

Ooh, creepy and cool!
-
So many Fallout New Vegas feelings.
It is actually an old fallout shelter. Built by the county about 8 km from the nearest, as I estimate, possible missile target. Way out in the middle of nowhere then, not any more.

Oh sweet Jesus am I ever ready for this! No-one will be alive to see this. 2024? Not even the Oracles predict that far.
-
Jesus. All right, damn. That's pretty big.

I may have gotten the most exciting text in years.
My older brother just sent me this. In '99, he split the 3rd Ed starter set with his friends and I read that sumbe-atch cover to cover countless times. It was his 3rd edition mini-dex that attracted me to the Unforgiven.
Do I expect him to go full tilt like I did? Nope. Just exciting to see he's got stuff back on the painting table and it's in the right beslubbering colour!

Awesome! :D

Turns out him and his friends are getting into Kill Team. Still a win in my books.

This is a recording of a D&D campaign that I play in on Wednesdays. Some context for the video:
- We are two members down this session. One forgot what day it was, and the other lost power after someone took out a telephone with their car
- The DM gave us the chance to avoid all this by recommending we wait until everyone was present, but we thought we'd be fine to face anything as it was
- Harold is played by the guy who "panics"
- Harold is played as a character that has left a life at sea and just begun his career as an adventurer. He has never seen a person being killed until the first fight we had in the dungeon.
- Harold is a Sorcerer with a might 26hp at level 5
- His experiences in combat so far have lead him to believe that he is invincible because he has been targeted many times at range but has yet to be hit
- The giant door that we are standing in front of was an Elder Gate, and when we opened it we were all hit with a curse that prevents us from regaining hit points. We, the players, know that, but our characters don't.
- Before we opened the door, we had discussed an intricate plan to allow the non-darkvision characters an opportunity to see the single Manticore we knew was behind the door
- After the door was opened, we then proceeded to have another discussion about how the curse would effect our plan. This is what lead me to ask if the monster could hear us.
- It was only after combat began did we find out that there were, in fact, three manticores waiting for us.
Begin with the video at this point:

After combat begins, you can skip to this section:

The more we play, the more our group name of The Wurst Experts seems appropriate (yes, wurst was intentionally spelt that way lol)

With the 40k data devs saying they are done with using BattleScribe because the creator refuses to update or go open source...
Desperate times call for desperate measures. Taught myself how to make rudimentary data files for Army Builder (which I've always prefered to BS anyways). It's not pretty, its not efficient, but it suits my needs!

You could all just write your army lists down on paper with a pen you know. It would be a lot quicker ;).

Well, they're not wrong.

I mean, that's pretty spot on!

That feeling when Make-A-Wish approaches your clan to do a 24hr charity stream after seeing your D&D group's stream on the clan's affiliated twitch channel, and specifically request that at least 6-8 hours is dedicated to your D&D game.

Damn, congrats!

Nice! That sounds great!

That's awesome! Congrats!
