Saim-Hann Army List (5th of 5 Craftworld Themed Armies)
« on: October 3, 2009, 05:40:23 PM »
This is the final installment of my Craftworld themed armies.  I'm wiling to guess that Moc (and perhaps a few others) will argue I saved the best Craftworld for last.  I hope that my attempt to honor the theme of that Craftworld will not disappoint them.

(140) Autarch w/ Jetbike, Mandiblasters, Laser Lance & Fusion Gun.

(130) Farseer w/ Fortune, Jetbike & Runes of Warding.

(364) Jetbike Warlocks x7 w/ Embolden x2, Enhance x2, Singing Spear x3.

(60) Dire Avengers x5.

(126) Jetbike Guardians 3 w/ Shuriken Cannon.  Jetbike Warlock w/ Embolden.

(205) Jetbike Guardians x6 w/ Shuriken Cannon x2.  Jetbike Warlock w/ Embolden & Singing Spear.

(252) Shining Spears x5.  Exarch w/ Star Lance, Shuriken Cannon, Skilled Rider & Withdraw.

(218) Warp Spiders x8.  Exarch w/ Dual Death Spinner, Power Blades & Withdraw.

(180) Falcon w/ EML, Holo-Fields & Spirit Stones.

(160) Fire Prism w/ Holo-Fields & Spirit Stones.

(160) Fire Prism w/ Holo-Fields & Spirit Stones.

Total: 1995 points
5 Infantry, 8 Jump Infantry, 25 Jetbikes, 3 Vehicles
3 Scoring Units, 11 Kill Points

Army Design Concept:

My goal here was to maximize the jetbike aspect of the Saim-Hann theme.  Though Moc and others will say that its perfectly acceptable to use mounted squads of Aspect Warriors, I felt that would be too similar to my Biel-Tan army lists.  This build might be less effective in the current meta, but I think its a decent list that would be fun to play with (or against).

The Autarch is the Wild Rider Chieftain, and the Shining Spears are his kinsmen.  I picture the bike council as a rival group, with the two of them seeking to one-up each other.  Rather than fighting amongst themselves however, they test themselves against the enemies of their Craftworld; delighting in the challenge of slaughtering their enemies before their rivals can do it.

The two squads of jetbikes represent the division in the tribe, supporting each of the leaders and their kin.  These squads join in the fighting when needed, otherwise they observe the competition from a safe distance (i.e. they occupy objectives).  The Falcon, Fire Prisms, and Warp Spiders provide escort for the entourage of bikers; keeping them from becoming overwhelmed by their enemies when they become totally engrossed in their "festivities".

(Moc, not trying to make your kindred out to be idiots or anything, just wanted to come up with a fun way to explain the composition of the army from a fluff standpoint. ;) )

Strategy:

The Falcon and Fire Prisms are used as a screen to protect the Autarch, Shining Spears, and the Bike Council while they position themselves to attack.  The skimmers will use their firepower to thin out enemy units, especially hordes, which might bog down the assault teams.  When the time is right, the vehicles will break formation, manuvering around the flanks to isolate enemy units for destruction by the assault units.

The two squads of Jetbikes will likely be held in reserve (especially the small squad), unless I am going first, in which case the Shuriken Cannons can add their firepower to my efforts to thin out the opposition.  These units will take full advantage of their mobility to stay away from enemy assault units, and attempt to take objectives in the later part of the game.  Likewise, the DAVU Falcon (not really the best element of the army from a theme standpoint, but an effective choice none the less) will also grab an objective, while lending its long range firepower to the battle.

The Warp Spiders are there primarily as a harassment element.  They can prey on isolated enemy units, support my assault elements, or function as mobile cover for my jetbikes, interposing themselves between my troops and enemy guns if other cover is not available.  They can also deep strike behind enemy lines, causing havoc among the enemy's own support elements.

I welcome any comments (or ratings: Gutstikk/Moc) that you might have.  I am not seeking any advice for how to improve the army list however, as I consider this a finished product.

Once again I put the items into working groups so that I can go through them better... I also added a Singing Spear to one Warlock as you had the points, and it adds more than many would think.

moc-score

1.. Anti-tank potential Good 0.8.... Each group has AT except for the Spiders.. and 7 ways to take down Armour is not to bad, and its a nice mix of range to.... It does lack the Traditional Brightlances or Fire Dragons; but its still good.
2.. Anti-MEQ potential Average 0.6.... The Spears group, and the Council are both good MEQ killers... but the rest is just average or worse... The trick it so play them defensively as you described, attrition the enemy down as you gain table control...
3.. Anti-Horde potential Average 0.6... I see some good things; but the lack of flamer templates will hurt you, and so will the lack of resilience in some of the groups... If you use the pie plates to drop on the enemy, and keep your distance while you widdle them down, it can do well enough though.
4.. Ranged Firepower potential Average 0.6... It really only boasts 3 ranged groups, which is not great; but its speed can help.
5.. Assault potential Above Average 0.7... I know some will balk at this score; but having two dedicated assault groups, and loads of support has worked very very well for me in the past... so its all about playstyle and timing... The Spears a Glass Hammer, so watch their placement and they can be uterly amazing; otherwise you just wasted 252 pts.
6.. Scoring Units / point level Slightly below Average 0.5... 3 Scoring units and two of them are soft... you will need to Reserve them well, and use them with caution...
7.. Durability or Resilience Average 0.6... There are some serioulsy tough groups out there, and then there are some serious "marshmellows"... so playstyle is the key (go defensive)....
8.. Flexability Above Average 0.7... The new IG will give it a run, and will anything your not familiar with; but I see it having potential ve most lists that I know of.
9.. Mission Capabiliy Good 0.8... only 11 KP's, and good ways to score if you play it right... so think about your deployment, movement, and threat priority and you should do well.
10. Dynamics and/or Theme Excelent 1.0... Saim-Hann is near and dear to my Heart; and this list screams old school mixed with new school... I love it... I have played lists so similar to this one that I actually thought you borrowed it from me, and they work... They also look and feel amazing on the table... On a side note, I used almost this exact list to wipe out a Crimson Fist opponent in 6 turns... and only took a few casualties in return (lost 2-3 Jetbikes, and half the Spiders)... I played the defensive fade, and sucker punched him unit be unit... and it was easy... The only problem was that my opponent felt like selling his army when the game was over, as it was his worst loss ever. Luckily he kept his army, and has learned to tool them better and play them better... And he actually did get his revenge later on, so all was good...

Rating = 6.9/10 So its a great Fun list... and it has good potential vs almost anything... It is expensive to build though, so take your time... And pm me if you need ideas on tactics etc..

Cheers
