Osgiliath Bigature/Gameboard
« on: September 6, 2012, 08:45:22 PM »
Hey guys,
Been quiet for a while here on my beloved terrain forum but I have returned!

Some of you may know that I'm currently working on a 3.5m x 4m Osgiliath board and I have finally after 400hrs completed the first sector :)

The board itself is for a campaign style game that utilises a resource mechanic similar to RTS games like Age of Empires (But more restricted) or BFME.

This section of the board is the centrepiece really. The Dome structure is the Citadel of Stars which is an aged hall that once housed one of Gondor's Palatirs; the great seeing stones that united the old Numenorean nation.

Stairs to the Dock

Busted Gate

Dome

Dome

Orcifications

Hope you guys like it :)

More on the way in another 400hrs :P

totally awesome.
You say you (are gonna) have more stuff like this? Where do you store that?

Some 'making off' bits would be appreciated.

I like the wooden walkway, very nice. What is this thing made from? (the whole piece, not just the ramp)

Cheers guys,

The hilltop island is polystyrene shaped with knives, hacksaw and sandpaper. The stonework is Foam Coreboard. Then everything is texture painted.

The Orcifications and ladders and stuff are matchsticks, paddlepop sticks and cooking skewers :)

I store it down in my garage/man cave but at the moment its on the dining table cause my partner likes watching me work on it.

Making of Photos :)

Looks bloody amazing, can't wait to see what else you're going to do. :D

Do you have any design sketches/plans for this, or the board as a whole??

How'd you get the masonry? Did you stick pieces of card on the construction or is it build it from separate pieces of foam core?
Nice Making of pic's, thanks. Very inspirational.

Thanks :D

It's carved straight into sheets of foamcore and then some of the stones are depressed to varying depths while some are untouched giving the varying depths of the stones :)

One question, how much of the board is going to be on their own 'little islands' high up above everything else?
I mean, will there also be stuff on the 'ground' floor.

These islands are in the middle of the river, the river runs through the central third of the board, the other two thirds are the riverbanks. Between these islands is where the naval warfare will take place :)

Wow, this is so AWSOME, Morty, you truly are back!

Do you have a plan for what the rest of Osgiliath will look like? If so please could we have a look?

Wow, this is great, it is the same style of buildings and colour that I imagined when I first read LOTR as a small boy, great work, can't wait for the next update.
Be nice to nerds, you'll probably be working for them.

What if by 'fly you fools'  Gandalf was actually telling the fellowship to call the eagles and fly to Mordor?

Thanks man :)

Yeah there is a loose plan I drew up to scale, so the map is 12m^2 :D

I'll upload a computer screen sized map sometime soon :)

Can I ask what the blue tiled roof of the cloister is made of? Whole thing stupendous, by the way. An earlier respondent asked about storage, and I may just have missed the answer? Is there any polystyrene in it? I am looking for ways of prepping polystyrene so it can be spray painted without melting...

Words just can't express how amazing this piece of terrain is Mortalis. The island looks like rock and the building looks like it is made of stone blocks. That the finished article is so different to its constituent parts is part of what makes it so extraordinary. Can I ask what your day job is? Is terrain making an extension of what you do for a living?

@Castellan Xerxes; The roof is simply hand cut pieces or cardboard simple and effective. The structures are foam coreboard but the entire base of polystyrene. In terms of spray painting; due to the chloroflurocarbons used as a propellant spray is always going to eat away as ps. So you need to create a barrier. I always paint my ps with textured/stone finish pain as my ps is usually rock work. Make sure you dont miss any bits as I did unfortunately and the spray gets through. If it helps colour the textured paint with food dye so you know if you have missed any spots. My old TP was dark grey but this new one is white so it was harder to see :(

@Alienscar;
Thanks man I love watching the little bits come together into the final piece too :) I am a university student studying Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering and Physics although next semester I'm changing into film so I can studying directing/set design and miniature work :)

Sup homies,

First sector has had another paint job; blues are bluer, greys and greyer :) The just weren't looking decent enough  under normal lighting, so pics of that soonish.

But for now here's a sneak peak at the first structure from the second sector. The Basilica that served as gondor's palatial court.

Cheers guys,

~Morty
