Title: Autumn Painting Challenge [updated with COMPLETED VOW GALLERY]
Post by: SeriousCallersOnly on November 1, 2006, 02:18:36 PM
ALL VOWS MUST BE IN BY November 10th

Welcome to the Autmn Painting Challenge. We have been running these all year now under Loydb, Khemri Demon and now me. The goal of this challenge is to get some of that unpainted lead that most of us have laying around table-ready. At the start of each month, participants pledge to have a squad painted by the closing date.

I'll list vows made, name and praise those that make it and name and shame those that don't.

This one has run for September, October and now November. (Note that this is three one-month challenges, not one three-month challenge.)

A squad, for the purpose of definition, would be anything that counted as a unit choice (e.g. HQ, Elite, Troop, etc.). This includes retinue for the independant char (e.g. familiars, bodyguards, etc.). I'd personally like to see multi-model squads -- the purpose of the challenge is to get a bunch of lead painted in a 3-month period -- but maybe you're planning on doing a kickass conversion/paint job for an army leader, nothing wrong with that.

RULES

1. Vows will be frozen 10 days after the start of the challenge. There is no changing of *any* vow after day 10. Say what you'll paint, then paint what you say. If you don't already own the models you want to paint, I suggest not making the vow until you do.

2. This is more of a request than a rule. *Please* post work in progress pics if you possibly can. One of the best things about the thread is watching stuff come together.

3. The model doesn't have to be texture based -- but the base must be painted.

4. Vows in parenthesis/brackets are essentially maybes and therefore won't count towards a fail if you don't do them.

Painting Challenge FAQ

Q: Do I have to do Games Workshop figs?
A: No. Several people make Warmachine vows. Since Warmachine doesn't use squads in the same way that 40K does, I suggest that it be at least a 3-man squad (Menoth Choir, etc.), or a warcaster + at least one warjack.

Q: I need to change my vow!
A: You have until Day 10 of the month.

Q: What if I don't have a camera?
A: We operate on the honor system. If you say you did it, we believe you. There are no prizes, so you only get the satisfaction of lying on the internet if you choose to do so.

Q: Will you do one of these every month?
A: That's the goal. Assuming the board manages to stay up

Q: Hey, what if we finish our vow but decide to paint more?
A: Paint away! If you mean, can you get a head start on next month, I guess so. But it's kind of cheesy to make a vow with a 75% painted unit at the start of the month...

Q: I want to paint a squad of Howling Banshees and a single Ranger. Is the Ranger legal?
A: Yes. The "must count as a troop choice" rule establishes the minimum. Anything above that doesn't have to conform, it's just bonus.

Q: When is the closing date?
A: The month runs with the calendar month. Vows freeze on the 11th.

Thanks to Loydb for getting this up and running (come back any time), and Khemri Demon for continuation. Lets see those vows

Sign me up for a wave serpant (already primed) and 2 war walkers (on order). If I have the time, I'll also finish my last 3 fire dragons (primed) if the holidays don't get in the way.

Let's see, this month I'll vow...

*Rummages through bitz box, turns up very little*

Uh, a Space Marine Captain, and five Assualt Terminators (relics from my failed Deathwing attempt).

This is essentially a filler vow until next month, when I'll have a whole Space Wolf Battleforce to do. Although my end of year exams start next month as well, so we'll see how that turns out.

Well, since I was overly ambitious last month, I hereby am scaling back my vows.

4 Grots
8 Shoota Boyz
6 Slugga Boyz

Thats eighteen models. If I finish one per day, I'll make it. As a bonus, the camera is working, and I can post some pics of the WIP. Oh, and the Warboss is almost done, along with 15 sluggaz and 8 shootas. That's why I didn't make my vow last month!

Vows updated, 15 in so far. Good to see so many returners, and a few new faces. I'll be away for a couple of days, so don't expect any updates for a bit. Off for a weekends gaming as it happens, using deathwing and dark eldar, both of which painted throught these vows over the last year.

See, it gets things done.

I'm done.  I finished my totem hunter.  Pictures up soon.  I like how he came out, but done't like it at the same  time.  He came out some what as I envisioned, but still not fully so.  I may go back and change some details.  Either way I'm done.

yesh and I thought I was fast!

gj on finishing your vow, maybe if you're so fast next time make the vow a bit bigger ;)

I am done with my Devilfish and all 10 Pathfinders now.  gunna start on the Commander now, not sure if I will go Sept colors on him (ie all red) or the normal colors for Vi'orla

and damn not being able to sleep! I just bought myself and airbrush and compressor! the things we do to keep our crack habit rolling smoothly.

My wave serpant is finished with the exception of the chin turret. I'm waiting on my codex to decide between twin cats and a cannon.

War walkers are primed. Very cool models, but I suspect that they will be very complicated to paint.

Vows updated

harbinger, levett and elessar, I need to know how many minis for your vows.

Congrats to kitzune for being first to finish - 3 days to vow some more if you like.

Loydb - have I seen that wraithlord before? I think the base looks familiar.

As for me, zero progress on the jetbikes. In fact, I'm considering dropping them and vowing something else as they were so useless in the game I played at the weekend that they may well be banished to the bottom of the box.

Up to 27 vows, another busy month. Lets see if we can get more completes this time. Think I'll start naming and shaming those who haven't posted a progress report by, lets say, the 20th?

I got this one done last night, and I'll have the Squad done by next week (touch wood) so the defiler had to be added on to the vow.

Ok, why not. It might just stimulate me to work faster.

I will finish my autarch and paint 6 men (rather women) of howling banshees

@ Mart007

cheers, its a bit boring, but as i said, its nesessary.

im going to put some ruinous scriptures on it, and make some rags with sorcerous wards written on them to count as mutated hull should i ever want to use the upgrade. i thought it would be more to the liking of the word bearers.

Vows updated and locked.

28 in then. 20 days to paint your vows folks, 10 days to post an update (with WIPS if you can) I'll be *reminding* anyone we haven't heard from by the 20th.

At this rate I'll be the first to be named and shamed. Painted nothing this month yet. I have assembled a bunch of warriors and a raider though.

I only painted a Hammerhead this whole week!

think my subconcious mind doesn't want to start anything else new till I get my air brush in the mail as I hate doing base coats! HATE IT HATE IT bad bad base coats, base coats make me crazy!

mwhahah

CRAZY!

but all that's left now is the last Hammerhead with Skyray bits(which I finished magnetizing the missles on the wings) and a 12 man FW squad.

I used my painted minis for the first time this past week at my store and got quiet a few oohhs and ahhhs, and a lot of "it's nice to see a differently painted tau army for once!" made me feel good. made the voices quiet down just alittle!

As far as my vow goes, I'm sticking with it....

Originally I think it was 8 sluggas, 8 shootas, and 4 grots.

Well, one shoota is done. A slugga is done. A grot, finished.

In the meantime, I have totally distracted myself with a Tac Squad of Ultras and Tigurius, which are coming out just gorgeous. All that highlighting on the Orks was good practice for fine lining power armor!

Back to the green horde, though. I swear I'll get this done by the end of the month, so help me.

Painting has taken a tumble in the last few days. Buildings arrived for my CoD board... you can follow the link in my sig. *nudge nudge*

Also parts to make my wolf scouts arrived do they needed mocking up so I could make decisions on poses.

Pics soon.

Basic colours on the hull are done, no edging or highlighting yet. The driver's mostly done but still need to do some details inside the cockpit (no, the hull isn't glued together yet).

And yes, I know the forcefield generators are the wrong way around. I superglued one set on, then looked at the next ones and went "oh, bum." You can't tell at first glance...   :-\

Wolf guard body guard

Started highlighting the face. Scroll is done (unless some one has a good tip... other than text, as this will be done at the very end).
Still a long way to go  :(

What do you mean? All the official GW pics have the generators on that way, and that's they way I put mine on.

I've got one war walker cockpit remaining, and a bunch of guns (4x starcannon, 2x scatter lasers, 1x shuriken cannon). Also those three fire dragons I stupidly included in the vow and haven't even started on yet.

I mean that the longest one is actually in the middle, not at the back - the gems don't line up like they're meant to.

Ahh, yeah, I didn't even notice until you pointed it out. I've actually done that on both of my serpants, but, luckily, I caught the mistake before the plastic cement dried. It really doesn't look bad that way, and only someone very familiar with the model would ever know it wasn't supposed to be that way.

8 Hawks  now completed. Table ready, basic bases, and a gloss varnish for protection. The Exarch was not actually part of the vow, as I had done him before.

Update time. I've done 3 reavers, basecoated 2 more. Photos later (optimistic). Work is likely to get fairly hectic this week, so I'll look in when I can.

Thanks for WIPs/progress reports so far. As threatened, here's those that have vowed then posted nothing:

Inquisitor Sethtus: 5 HE Silver Helms
Chaplain Harlean: 10 guardsmen, 5 hard. vets (2 plasma guards + officer)
Evil Toast: 4 jetbikes, guardian platform, 4 DA
Yentz:  5 Zealots, 2 Cylcops and the Old Witch and Scrapjack
Chris Little: 10 Necron warriors
OmegaOne: Avatar, 2 vypers
Warsmith Jozzack: 5 terminators
scoutsniper: 5 GK and librarian
firebirdv8: 7 dire avengers
The harbinger: tactical marines and snipers (how many?)
Elessar Telemnar: 10 Dire avengers

Come on then, how are these vows going? Everyone likes the progress photos, so lets see them.

someone could have told me that defilers are the biggest pain in the a$$ to paint! after painting a rhino in one night, i recieved the defiler a day or two later, undercoated it, stuck it together (thats where i maed the big mistake) and now its taking ages. i have the silver and the red on the bottom half of him, i just have to do the black ink, some tidying up after that, then the red ink goes on.

after i finished the last challenge so easily, i set my sights on a vow that was maybe slightly out of my reach. but we'll see.

sorry i havent put any WiPs on for a while, illl try to do some tonight, its because i recently got a new mobile and the sony ericson software is a bit of a pain in the ass.

Umm, the only thing done in photoshop was the background knocked out and a small dropshadow (well, and resized down from 12 megapixels.) Sorry if it bothers you, but I fail to see how a dusty backdrop enhances the image.

edit: Is it the dropshadow that bugs you? Is this better?
edit2: Great ghosts btw, Marshall

ah, I thought you had photoshopped the actual mini. the 2nd photo looks more real. I think it was the black outline and grey background that made it look like a cartoon or illustration. It doesn't bother me as such, just thought it detracted from your painting.

I think anything airbrushed tends to look a lot more "illustrated". I'm not a fantastic artist, but I started airbrushing scale models (planes mostly) over 20 years ago, so I can put down a nice coat or two if I put my mind to it. It's not really practical for human-sized figures, but it rocks for vehicles...

I can see your point about the dropshadow, it makes the whole thing look like it was blacklined. Look in the thread on airbrush paint, there's a picture of it sitting amidst some paint bottles that's the most "real" I guess.

Aye, I too will bring shame upon me and my ancestors by not completing this vow. With only 2 days left before the end of this month, I wont be able to complete it. :(

To make it all worse - now I have 20 dire avengers,10 Warp Spiders, 10 Banshees, a Prism tank, a Waveserpent, 6 jetbikes, 2 heavy weapon platforms, an autarch and 2 farseers to paint :/

I have to revise my wow. I completed an autarch as promised, however banshees will be postponed. Instead as a part of Iron painter competition, which incidentally I won  ;) I painted entire tyranid battleforce - assembled and completed all in 2.5 days. I will post pictures as soon as I get my camera back

Vow update!

Originally, the plan was to get the rest of the Ork horde done. Well, I got about ten percent into it...and started a new project.

So once again, although the vow was for Orks, and it was too late to change, I am somehow justifiying by listing what I did get painted this month:

Tigurius, painted to a display stnadard.

Razorback, nearly finished (highlights, lining, and weathering, 1-2 hours total)

Squad of 6 very high quality Ultramarines, including sgt with extras.

Conversion of a Reaper mini to an imperial priest. Complete with chainsword and grenades.

Assembly of a Tau Fire Warrior team.

Base colors on some Skull Pass Dwarves and Goblins.

As you can see, I've been busy. But yet again, unless I take the day off work tomorrow (not likely) I'm not going to get the Orks done this month.

And the new Empire stuff comes out next month....sigh.

Initial list of completes on the front page. I make it 12 so far. Come on, lets see if we can manage 50% this month. I'll post a final list later, and set up the next month.

As for me,

Some tidying up since the photos were taken. Funny how you only see the mistakes when you take a photo.

@ seriouscallersonly:

you should make a searate thread showcasing the pics of people that are able to finish their vows. some of the stuff i see on these 'challenge' threads gets lost in the chatter and not seen by people that arent involved in the thread. it just seems a shame.

im loving the jet bikes by the way, and the fire dragons, they look sweet as!

Mmm, I was thinking that. I think rather than a separate thread, maybe compiling all the 'completes' in one post before the thread is closed.

Any more? give it another day for stragglers to charge their batteries or whatever, and I'll ask Yentz to lock this one.

OK, I'll try to do that tonight. Is it possible to copy and paste within a thread? I can always save, upload to my own photobucket, but is there an easier way? Nobody lock this yet (and no Kitsune, they changed it so you can't lock your own thread)

Yes, Right click on the picture, go into properties and get the URL. Then from there just put it in the image tag.  It's already hosted, it doesn't need to be hosted again.

Edit: Oh for Firefox, follow the same steps, but it's listed under "Location:"

Here you are then, a gallery of theose who completed vows and posted photographic evidence this month. I just picked one photo from each vower. Apologies if its not the best one.

Incidentally, 3 of us completed vows in all three months of the Autumn challenge. Extra big cheesy grins to:

 ;D Kitzune  ;D

OK to lock this thread now.
