I cant say Im very experienced as I only have played a few games already, but you should count points yourself in the codex :) A good way to get familiar with it!
If I were you I'd buy myself another fire warrior squad next, but I'm the "hordy" kind of player who wants to shoot my opponents to dust before they can come up close.

i found that making a 40k in 40 mins army was a good way to start off tau. Play a few games and see what sorts of units you like. Eg i bought, fire warriors, fire warriors and devil fish, a crisis suit and 4 stealth suits. this gave me a variety of army combinations to try.

if i were you, i would invest in a crisis suit or 2 and more fire warriors.

hope this helps a bit

First off welcome to 40k online  :)

Building on the army you already have, get some crisis battlesuits and a squad of firewarriors. Those models will give you a solid force for small games (like 40k in 40mins), and will help you get an idea where you want to go next. A devilfish troop carrier would not go amiss either, as it can help build the mobility that many new tau players lack. Then again, you might want to get more models before you go to vehicles. Either way it is your call.

Points wise... hmm... assuming that your kroot box gives you 16 models, and your fws come with drones, then the force you have is about 300 pts. I am not sure what the exact total is, but it is around that number. If you want to find out exactly how much, then review the codex and familiarise yourself with it.

Hope you enjoy playing with your Tau  ;)

hi welcome to the tau empire and 40K online

is this you first army?

every one knows i what i thinks is that tau mech is the way to the go. that's mobile tau tatiacs "fish of furry" have a look around at this web site for tataics

http://www-personal.engin.umich.edu/~leebj/

you have 409 points but that just maxing out which isnt a good idea

try making a 500 point list with your codex and post it here (dont worry about what models you have)

oh and if you havent got the big black book (40K rule book) get it otherwise you spend a lot of time not knowing what you can do.
best thing to buy next which ever list you play is a box set either the battle box £50 or the devilfish with fire wariors £25 you get a saving on either.

get the army box.   You get another 12 kroots, 12 fire warriors, 3 crisis, some gay palm trees, and alotta drones.   And after that focus on if you want a mech, or hold the line army.   Then start getting either broadsides for hold the line, or hammerheads and devlifishes for mech.

You might want to buy a crisis suit to replace your Ethereal.

Then you might want to get a devilfish along with some pathfinders.

Then maybe some stealth suits, because their pretty good.

This should be good for a begining army.  Then just build on farther.

Armies- W/L/D
Tau (2000 pt under construction: assembling & painting) 1/2/1
Space Marines 1800 Points: Dark Angels (under constructions: finish painting) 6/2/2

Do a 40k in 40 minutes list add in previously mentiioned units and watch a couple of games involving Tau at your store to see how they work.

i would just say get the models you like the look of best :)  if you are only new then its really all about finding out how the different units work and interact with the rest of the army  and the best way to do this is get the models you like the best and use them. once you are comfortable with them try getting a different unit and build your army that way. then as well as increasing your force you will be learning how you force will work :)
