Pop up ads!
« on: March 1, 2003, 04:05:39 PM »
Ok, I need help.

Here's how it works: I just moved my CPU back home to take advantage of my cable system.

So I'm playing games online, and then suddenly, it minimizes my game, and slaps this big ass ad window on my desktop. And get this: IT ADVERTIZES POP-UP AD STOPPERS. And it comes up every ten minutes or so.

Now realize my virus scan doesn't detect anything, and I perform routine checks with my ad-aware program to remove spyware. Thus, I see no conclusion....other than it is the CABLE that is doing this itself somehow.

So.....I don't see how to get rid of it. Help?

well - i doubt it was the cable provider - but in the mean time get yourself a pop-up stopper program - they are les than a meg and won't consume hardly any CPU/memory usage so it won't impact on your game

Oh yes, I already HAVE a pop up stopper, and it works fine.

However, this new ad completely bypasses it!

it depends what kind of ad pop-up it is... if it's an HTML pop-up from a website, then it shouldn't be happening... it may be from MSN or Trillian and if that's the case, I don't know of an ad pop-stopper that stops it, it always kicks me out of WC3 for instance...

so if you find a stopper that's free and works for MSN, lemme know...

other than that, try using adstopper or something that will sniff through your registry, etc. to stop ads...

good luck!
Just a fan of this awesome site.

It's alright.

So......how exactly does one "block" a URL?
