New player - Eldar with harlequin allies
« on: August 27, 2015, 04:57:11 PM »
I'm just getting back into 40k after years out the game, and I'm starting an Eldar army at the moment. I'm looking at using Eldar and Harlequin allies, but the formations/ detachments are throwing me a bit, and I just want to confirm whether the force I intend on playing is legal.

Basically I'm looking at combined arms 1 farseer, 2 squads of dire avengers. The harlequins would soley be the Heroes Path formation.

Is this a legal force for Battleforged? I'm planning on getting these and then building the rest of my force around this.

Might want to read the codices either borrow it or buy it. It sounds like you're forming a Combined Arms Detachment (CAD) with an Allied Detachment (AD).

I like the way you are heading, but do look at the detachments to make sure they are proper as a detachment or have your Harlequin force org.

Actually haunt, how that army would be composed would be the Eldar in a Combined Arms and the Harlequins taken as formations.  If done like that, it is indeed a legal battle-forged list.
If there is anything that recent politics has taught us, it is that quotes taken out of context can mean what ever you want them to.

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I just wasn't sure whether a formation had any requirements for a detachment, like taking the harlequin detachment would be necessary in order to use the formations. There doesn't seem to be much of a difference between detachments and formations.

There is no difference between them.  Detachments give you a bit more flexibility in what you can bring, usually by just dictating what organization slots you have to take, whereas formations give you additional rules but are very restrictive in which units you are allowed to take.
