Champions of El'Johnson: The Deathwing
« on: May 15, 2011, 07:07:29 PM »
Greetings.

I was a long time Dark Angels player and one day decided to sell my army. This was shortly after reading Descent of Angels which was a very poor book and made me a sad panda.

I have recently got to a comfortable position with my hobby. My Vampires are completed, my DE are waiting for the next wave, my Goliaths are one or two blokes off completion and 1.2 of my Mordheim warbands are painted. Other than a Hive Tyrant for my mate and a couple of INQ minis I found I was running out of stuff to paint.

I saw something exciting over at http://www.microartstudio.com/

So I decided I'd have a crack at Deathwing, y'know 'cos they're badass.

Here's WIP #1:

He's going to be the champion of one of my termie squads. I'll probably go to 1500 pts. I would like to get an FW dreadnought in the list and a Crusader or two. I plan on using parts from the new GKs as well as some CSM parts to make the armour look more archaic and bespoke.

Thunderhammers and Stormshields will be order of the day I think.

Lots of sculpting, detailing and basing to go but I think the test mini is beginning to look kinda cool

hope to get lots of feedback and support here!

cheers

A.

Very cool. Wanna see how this pans out. I've seen the Lion pads before, but not really considered them. I like my Crux Terminatus. Might pick up a couple for my characters.

I generally don't read the Dark Angel fluff. Because most of it is absolutely afwul and like you, I am prone to bouts of Sad Panda when reading it. Stick to the older stuff, the Complimation 'Deathwing' is brilliant if you can get hold of it, but I think it's OOP.

Thanks for the responses guys,
@Sheepz- I like the FW cruxes, but not the plastic GW ones so much; not sharp enough for me.
I think my mate has 'Deathwing' I'll borrow it next time I visit my parents.

@typhon- Lion shoulder pad is off a FW terminator character that a friend wasn't using. Astral Claws I think. Hoping to do some more green stuff work soon!

I made some progress today! Couldn't find my chaplain so I built a new one. These guys are still very much WIP and need lots of greenstuffing/ detailing. But I'm out of GS, glue and primer... birthday next week!

Here's where I've got to:

Champion

Apothecary
back detail

Assault Cannon

Standard Bearer

Chaplain
rear detail

unit accessories

Squad

I'm happy with the bases having struggled to get the extremely flat robe bases to stick to any scenic bits... I need to start thinking about colour schemes and what GS details I want to/ am able to achieve.

stay tuned

A.

Nice, are they more truescaled? They look very tall. Also, are those Chaos Lord chestplates?

I like the Lion pad, didn't know it was FW. Pretty sure I've seen similar duplicates out there on the web.

Where did you get the hourglass and book for the Chaplain? Digging that.

They are taller, which I like, but that is the only proportional difference. The chest plates are regular CSM ones (I didn't have a box of imperial termies and kinda like the archaic vibe). The hour glass and book are from the WHFB Empire Flagellants.

They look great mate. Thanks for the info, will have a look into my friends bitz box since he has some flagellants. When can we expect to see them painted?
