Yellow Falcon down! :P
« on: August 17, 2009, 06:56:57 AM »
Hey all,

Inspired by Black Hawk Down incase you didn't already guess I made an objective marker for my army to fight over.  I went for a realistic weathered look as best I could and im pretty happy with the results.  What do you all think?

It's very nicely done, I like it a lot. Though it's a sacriligeous waste of a Falcon!!! ;)

Yeah it is a waste. Nevertheless - looks awesome! And come to think of it, nice terrain does cost a bit so I guess it's money well spent.

Very nice job, it looks completely mangled...

Wow that was a quick response.

:P trust me its less wasteful than it could have been.  I certainly didn't go out and buy a falcon just to make this.... Ive had this old falcon laying around broken for god knows how long and instead of leaving it laying about cluttering up space and collecting dust... or just throwing it away I thought I could give it a new lease of life by brightening up my gaming table :) Im happy now that I held onto it for so long.

It's very cool, the only thing I'd change is the top of the hull where the turret goes. At the moment it looks like a plastic model kit, some plasticard to texture that bare patch and perhaps some wires sticking out through the hole would make a lot of difference.

Beyond that though the weathering is ace.

It is very vell done. however one thing really spoils it for me.... that perfectly round hole on the top of falcon.. If something rips off you turret some damage at the attachment area should be expected.

Dont worry Skeeve!  I will be addressing that very soon... I will likely be taking some sort of implement to it to wreck it up a bit and then have lots of wires and cabling coming out of it as has been suggested already by some.

Will update with improvements later

Did you use airbrush at any point? If you make something like this but not still functioning it might be pretty competitive. A piece made this well is very much out of "tabletop" level and might have a fighting chance.

Very, very nice piece of terrain
But really its perfect for playing. Think this way - our tanks get destroyed we put wool or cooton smoke. Apart from this vehicle is unscratched.
So here just play with already wrecked Falcon, assuming its in perfect condition, hell its going to get wrecked anyway sooner or later and You don't need smoke anyway ;););)

Brilliant paint job.  Great weathering effects.  I especially like the view from the rear with the shattered door and frame.

Please post pics after you tackle the turret hole.

I did indeed paint this using an airbrush... The yellow was already painted as I simply took an existing model I dont ever use... but all the weathering and the base was done using the airbrush.

Ive been experimenting with this airbrush for about a week and im getting some pretty good results.  I still think I can do better.  Im tempted to start experimenting with pigment and oil paints to get some ultra realistic weathering if I can.  Thanks Skeeve for those high words of praise :)

This is the original model that I took apart for this piece

I was always told a broken model is never garbage and regardless of state of repair can be put back to use in one way or another.

This is living testiment. Good work. Although I seen a thread a while back, which hinted at background of the era and universe of 40K being little to nothing is wasted. It appears a little too together for a time when plating such as the Falcons would be salvaged by one race or another for repairs or some such thing such as a clan of Orcs. But meh, That is just a small amount of detail.

I truly think  you did an amazing job of this peice.

Congrats.

very cool paintjob, then again I hate to see a falcon wasted : (

Now the damage could be done a little better and some mold lines could have been removed, but the whole piece still looks very cool, minor details would just make it a little bit better.

yeah, I will admit its not perfect and the are faults in it such as mould lines.. but thats because I put this kit together about 4-5 years ago whn I was much younger and a relative newb.  I just wanted to make use of the model I had lying around and not have to worry about doing a perfect paintjob.  For a piece of scenery like this I can over look the couple of mould lines that I left as a kid... and when I come to do some competition standard pieces that I have planned i'l make sure I get all the mould lines off.  But for now, on this im not worried about them at all.... just fixing the hole in the turret.

As I said earlier, very good work there Valar. Skeeve and IainC have a point though (didn't really notice first time), good to hear you'll be correcting that. You could even add some grinding or paint wear at the outside part of the turret emplacement, or buld some kind of external track as realistic turrets would have the bearing and motor mechanism at the outside anchoring point.

Just some suggestions. :)

Hmm yeah some sort of ball bearing type mechanism to help the turret swivel not a bad idea thanks Starky.  Il see what can be done about that.

Well it's Eldar so it doesn't have to be something as crude as a mechanical bearing. It could just as easily be a psycho-conductive mag-lev circuit represented by a ring shaped piece of plasticard with cables leading to it from the central hole.

mmmm well all I have to say is fantastic job. I agree with the torret area needing to be torn up a bit but other than that you did VERY well.

i love it when people take models like this and make terrain out of them it makes it very interesting and makes it worth more to you.

congrats
What a beloved day for war. Or pie...Pie wars? mmmmm pie
