New Tau Update
« on: April 23, 2013, 08:01:41 AM »
The New tau FAQ is up here

Not only can you take a TL weapon a another non TL version of the weapon, it also says you can take basically just two non TL versions (the example uses 3).

Its an awesome ruling. Basically telling us that we can do whatever we want. We are going to have to sort out new naming conventions for all the different options now open.

My suggestions might include just intensifying the terms we have now:

TL Plasma + Plasma = Blazing Eye
TL Fusion + Fusion = Starforge
TL Missile + Missile = Deathtorrent

Deathtorrent makes me happy.

What about flamer+flamer? Firewall?

Oh dude... Flamer+flamer+missile pod. Missile pod the transports and then burninate them as they get close. Up to 6d3 hits on anything charging your army with supporting fire! Dude....

The wording also implies that you can have a Commander take 4 things, or 2 TL weapons, even of the same type :)

2 TL Flamers, Iridium Armour, Repulsor Impact Field and a Failsafe Detonater, here I come! Suicide Commander FTW!!

Hang on, hang on... it's not compulsory to take 2 of the same weapons as Twin-linked, as I understand from the FAQ?

Done: Crisis Battlesuit team - 6x Missle Pods (2 seperate per suit), 3 Velocity Trackers.

Yea deathtorrent is a more interesting name than my "those are crisis suits with missiles, missiles and more missiles".   :D

Which is very devastating set up by the way.

Hm... I got a question now.

Which are better? Broadsides with HYMP or DeathTorrents?  They both fire the same number of str 7 shots but one's cheaper, one has another weapon to fire, one has mobility while the other has a better save....

Thoughts?

I prefer mobility over save every day of the week (especially when the saves are pretty close). The real selling point of the HYMP Broadsides is the fact that *all* their shots are twin-linked.

Of course, for the price you can get *more* Deathtorrent Crisis Suits, so I'd say XV8s. Then again, I've *always* said XV8s are better than Broadsides, so I might be a trifle biased.

I think the "better" choice would depend on the opponent and a bit on the maps you usually play on. For example it would be better to take XV8's against dark eldar so that we can account for their night shields. But I still like the death torrent more because most oppenents try to make it difficult for your broadsides to shoot anything worth while. That being said in my last game zephyr's grace on 24 FW, 2 pathfinder teams and a HYMP broadside was able to completly catch my opponent off guard and cripple him.

That's how I read it, and it's awesome! I'm thinking single suit with 3 flamers as a handy deterrent to assaulting any unit he can support.

You can't fire them all though, in fact some rules lawyers even claim you cannot fire more than one weapon for overwatch no matter what due to the unclear language of the overwatch rule. :(

Curses! Got a bit over-excited there then.
What's the wording that stops you from firing 2 weapons on Overwatch? I read that it is resolved 'like a normal shooting attack' (p.21), which I would understand to mean that if you can normally fire 2 weapons then you can also do so on overwatch.

I guess the argument is that:

Quote from: Main rulebook, p. 21
An Overwatch attack is resolved like a normal shooting attack

Means that there is no argument for this to include multiple shooting attacks from a single model; basically, a model firing overwatch can only make a single shooting attack. I am personally not that convinced but the ambiguity is certainly there.

I disagree. The Tau codex is very clear how battlesuits may make shooting attacks including as overwatch shots. There is no ambiguity. Anyone who thinks differently is free to open a thread in the Rules board yet I'm sure there's no wiggle room here to argue.

Wait, do you disagree about the ambiguity or do you disagree about the innate limitations to overwatch?

I am saying that an appropriate battlesuit may fire two weapons during overwatch. The codex is clear on this and the BDB remains in agreement. Otherwise, what ambiguity do you speak of?
