Title: Tyranid ship model sizes?
Post by: tryanotherone - smurfernating on July 17, 2007, 11:13:48 PM
I have just seen some very nice Tyranid ship conversions on warseer ( http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=93411 (http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=93411) ) and now I want to build my own fleet.

Could somebody please give me the approximate mini sizes of the various original nid ships.

Hmm, another question comes to mind. Does anybody else field converted nid ships or build his /her own ships?

tose look really cool, and as far as sizes i can't give the exact but, there (the little ones) probably about the size as a guant, and the big one, a carniflex  :o

Just measured the bases in BFG and they are 32mm and 60mm in diameter. But what's important is that models are not in scale with eachother as they are only symbolical representations of the ships/creatures moving around(everything is measured from the pin they sit on). Especially when it comes to nidz in BFG, you can't make a "wrong" model as they haven't got a fixed shape.
Just as a guideline escort type(1 hitpoint) creatures don't need to be larger/longer than 5cm and larger creatures is just up to you how they look like. The only limitation is how you manage to balance the model if gets to big, as it's easier to hit something with a large base if you have to make one yourself(especially if it gets larger than 60mm in diameter).

They are the same as the transparent "flyer" bases that come with the Necron Destoyers / Nid Gargoyles / DE Reaver Jetbikes, right?

Dunno since I don't have either of those models. BFG has relatively few restrictions, and basically if you don't like a rule or function, just change it to something that you and your fellow players agree to. If you want to scratbuild a nid army and want to use say 40k bases(if you happen to have alot of those around) I would let you use it despite that a 40k base is 1"(=25.4mm) in diameter and a transparent base is 32mm. Thats the emphasis of the game, do what you want as long as you don't deviate to much from the general categories/types of units. ^^

Most of the bases used are the smaller ones(drones use them?).  A couple of the large battleships use the normal sized flyer bases.

I don't know if this has been addressed, but all the lists are downloadable free from the specialist site.  I mention this mostly because the Tyranid list has been updated since it was printed in the book.

A friend of mine does, and i think it really suits the Nids in BFG to do so.

The large flying bases (used for battleships - in this case read hive ship) are the big flying bases used for speeders/grav-tanks, whilst cruisers and frigates use the jetbike/gargoyle base, about the same size as a normal infantry base. They are in each case the standard flying base.

Whatever looks good.
Since all measurement is base stem to base edge, or base edge to base edge, or whatever, the actual model sitting on the stem doesn't matter a hoot.

Size-wise...well,  if you look at the metal miniatures  (http://uk.games-workshop.com/storefront/store.uk?do=List_Models&code=301004&orignav=300808)you get a pretty good idea of scale.
You can - with little effort - identify the plastic parts they've been cast up out of. For example the core of the 'Razorfiend' cruiser is a tyranid warrior torso - just like the warseer one. The escorts are gaunt torsos and/or bio-weapons - as with the metals (the 'Stalker' is built around the muzzle of a devourer), and the hive ship is in this case a 'fex torso - the GW hive ship is the only custom build, but that's about right for scale.

The rules are availible free, but so is this article on custom-building bioships. Have a glance... (http://www.specialist-games.com/assets/BuildingBioShips.pdf)

And to answer - most people use converted plastics for tyranid models - since the metals are casts of exactly the same thing, just more expensive!

Equally people tend to use converted plastics for dark eldar (the metals look awful) and forge world for tau (again, the metals look awful and the resins are so shiny), regardless of which tau fleet list they actually use.
