How to fix clogged spray can?
« on: April 17, 2010, 06:43:47 PM »
My spray can seems to have lots of paint left, but the nozzle is clogged and can not spray anymore. Could anyone show me how to fix this? I live on campus and don't have a car, so manual techniques that don't require special ingredients would be greatly appreciated  :)

Use a paper clip to clear the nozzle and/or use a light solvent (nail cleaner) applied to the nozzle.

Turn it upside down and spray until the nozzle is unblocked. Failing that take the nozzle off and use a pin or piece of wire to unclog it. Don't stick anything sharp into the can part whatever you do.

if you have an old spray can (or buy a new one) without a clogged nozzle and just switch them, and replace it when your done.

Somethign with acetone in it, like nail polish remover should loosen it up.  Pure acetone would be better.  Some ladies use pure acetone on their nails, so a fellow student around there may be able to hook you up.

Umm... acetone can melt the plastic tip...

I know it melted my friend's Space Marine. That was funny.

1-when you've finished using the spraycan, turn it upside down and spray on a wood plank or something else (and always use the same, don't throw it aways, it becomes a tools...)... that way you keep the nozzle clean...

2-storing your praycans: keep them upside down, that way you're sure the the propelling gas inside won't leak out of the can (that plastic cap is more for protecting the nozzle then keeping the propelling gas inside...)

3-when you have a blocked nozzle, remove it and soak it in hot water for ±15minutes before brushing it with a toothbrush...

4-if you really have to get a pin inside, use a really small needle... but if you're beginning on that path, be carefull not to damage the nozzle.

5-ALWAYS FOLLOW TIPS #1- & #2-, You'll be saving $ and won't be waisting any material. better for you and the environment...

Acetone can melt SOME plastics.  Spray tips are solvent proof or else the paint you spray out of them would melt the tip closed.  It will disolve softer plastics like polystyrene or neoprene.  Heck they sell acetone nail polish remover in plastic bottles.

Most spray can tips are removable... so pop it of and soak it in household cleaner (mr. Clean etc)...

pop it back on after soakign and scrubbing (toothbrush)

Cheers
