Coming Soon - Lost Patrol
« on: May 9, 2016, 05:56:44 AM »
I am guessing that most of you have seen the rumours about Lost Patrol. Well the rumour mongers have just been put out of business. On GW's Webstore under the Warhammer 40000 tab there is a Featured Products sub heading, under this you will see a Coming Soon link for Lost Patrol. This game isn't due to be released until the 18th June and yet GW is showing off 360 degree model views, sprue pictures and box contents on their website already.

I sincerely hope that this is a sign of things to come from GW as I much prefer advance notice of new games and models rather than the one week they provide now.

This looks awfully like a revamped version of Advanced Space Crusade to me.  It was almost impossible for the Scouts to survive that game either, in fact it was so slanted in favour of the Tyranids that it didn't really work.  This game will probably appeal to many who never played Advanced Space Crusade, but it's not my thing.

Apparently this is a re-release of a game that was originally published in 2000. To be honest I have no recollection of that game at all but I am sure I remember a White Dwarf article detailing a mini game similar to this game.

I never played Advanced Space Crusade so can't comment on how similar they are but this game can be played in thirty minutes was that true of Advanced Space Crusade?

As far I as know the game is meant to be slanted in favour of the Tyranids. The Scout player is probably always going to lose and the challenge of the games comes from seeing how far you can get towards the exit and/or how many Tyranids you can kill on the way.

I think it will probably appeal to gamers that like to play some kind of game in their dinner hour.

Advanced Space Crusade was also recycled in a simpler form as Tyranid Attack in the early 1990s, so the concept has done the rounds quite a few times.  The constant theme has always been that the Tyranids/Genestealers are favoured, it's just that it was almost impossible to defeat them in Advanced Space Crusade.

The original Advanced Space Crusade could not be played in a lunch break.  It was far too complicated for that.

It's been on the website for over a month now and has been shown at several toy fairs across the world, and has even been sent out for review to several fan-sites (Beasts of War have been blogging the build and paint of their set).

It is indeed a remake of a 2000 release "Lost Patrol", which used the same plastic scout models as Advanced Space Crusade but some different game mechanics (as far as I can remember).

but it's not my thing.

Iri, nothing new is ever "your thing" ;)

Plenty of things GW has done have been my thing ;).  The current approach, however, is not something I agree with and rehashing a game from the late 1980s, which has already been reworked several times without much success, just strikes me as an odd decision.

I'm fairly sure the "current approach" is something you've not agreed with for the past 15 years! Despite how many times things have changed ;)

2000, not 1980's.

The idea is that it's a good value game with plenty of models and scope for varied gaming, which gives a reasonably cheap 'in' to the world of wargaming and Games Workshop. Sounds like a good idea to me...

Not the case.  I was became very much in favour of the streamlining which took place from third to fifth edition.  It was a culture shock initially, but after playing some games of third edition, I understood what GW was trying to do.  They've now reverted to a similar philosophy which eventually led to the collapse of the pre-third edition style of 40K.

It is from the late 1980s because the original 2000 version of this game is based on Tyranid Attack and Advanced Space Crusade.  To all intents and purposes, this is the fourth version of the same game, with just a few modifications.

I'm saying that they chose the wrong game to market this concept.  My view is that they could have picked better options from their history of adventure type board games.  I'm all in favour of encouraging wider participation and interest through this type of development :).

But all of the new board games they are releasing are in this concept.  Space Hulk, Deathwatch, Execution Force, Betrayal at Calth, Renegade Knight (or what ever it is called)...

Indeed, and some of those are fresher ideas, while others have always been popular (Space Hulk being the obvious example).  My point is that I don't view this particular brand (revamped Advanced Space Crusade) as something which is going to prove to be as popular as a number of these others have been.

It may not be popular for nostalgias sake, but it can still be popular as a budget entry into the hobby, or as a good value mini-boardgame for those hobbyists who want something different.

Remember, the majority of GW collectors won't even know what Advanced Space Crusade was... It's completely irrelevant that Lost Patrol has some similarities to it.

It's not irrelevant period, but you are right that it may be irrelevant to some younger gamers who are getting started.  They can, of course, become aware of these things through interaction with older gamers though, and may be interested to learn about the history of some of the games that they are playing :).

Time will tell as to how well it sales.  If it proves to be popular and sells well, you're more than welcome to come and show me the figures.  I also hope that you are right and that it does appeal to people, as boardgames can draw people into the wider hobby; indeed that's how I got into Fantasy and 40K all those years ago.

I'm far from what you would describe as a young gamer, and Advanced Space Crusade is only known to me because I've heard it being talked about.  I have no idea how it plays or what the rules are.  The game was released in 1990, so we need to remember that was 26 years ago.  Longer than a good portion of the gaming community has been alive, and longer than a larger portion has had an interest in gaming.

GW is going down the right path by bringing back part of what made their company great.  They were more than just "the Warhammer / LOTR company," they had board games in a wider selection of games to play.  They are going back to that, and if they have a history of games to choose from that they can introduce a new generation of gamers to, why go out of your way to design something completely new (which they have done with Execution Force, Betrayal at Calth, Renegade Knight, Deathwatch, etc)?
