Brown Ink
« on: July 8, 2017, 08:26:26 AM »
A staple of my ork painting was brown ink from citadel. I liked the way it got into the crevases and it gave the models a slight gloss which worked for my orks because the weapons look a little greasy (as a proper ork should look).

Problem is that I can't find any brown ink anymore since it was discontinued and my reserves have run out... Anyone know where I can find a substitute ink that would fit the bill...

I want it too:

Be slightly glossy
Go into crack, not sit on surface

Thanks,

Adam

Agrax earthshade is the closest thing to brown ink, and is a fairly ubiquitous paint for most painters. It's great for any sort of earthy basecoats and golds. That, nuln oil and reikland fleshshade are the three paints I use the most.

If you are looking for the OLD colours:
https://www.blackhat.co.uk/coat-darms/7791-2/
There should also be a chart around with the original GW names.
These colours are the original recepies ....
sure you have an opinion,
but my swordplay is better than your´s

Take my advice, I never use it.

There is even now such a thing as Agrax Eathshade Gloss

Does everything the shades do and dries with a gloss finish as opposed to the matt finish of the regular shades

Give it a wack - I've been loving it for swamp weathering

This. It is superb stuff and sounds like it would be perfect for what you want. Even better, you could use regular Agrax for the Ork, and just apply the Gloss version to the metals/weapons, thus giving further definition.

Winsor and Newton Drawing inks.

They have 2 browns, Nut brown and Peat brown. I can't remember which one is closest.

Thanks for the help guys... This gives me some options and some things to try... I like the idea of doing the orks matte and the equipment oily... THat's pretty much what I would do because I typically used Dark Angles green over black spray primer as the base for the ork skin. This meant that if I got a little brown ink, it didn't really matter. I did use the brown ink to blend the lighter greens into one another though...

I'll just have to experiment and see what works... I have seen that chart so I should be able to match the colors from before...

Thanks guys! :)

Adam

BTW Murgal... That link you posted has some great prices... Are the paints good quality?

Coat D'arms used to make the pain for GW a long time ago. It's not as good as the new GW line, but it's almost identical to the Ink era, Black top hexagon flip bottle era GW paints.
