Topic: Here's what I have...made into a list!

This is a list I made up using most of the models that I have, just to see how many points I could field without beefing up the wargear, options, etc. I have a few different options for my secondary HQ, like a Chaplain on a bike, with a jump pack and in Termie armor (as well as regular)...plus a few "Heros" to use as Commanders, etc. I would probably boost a few wargear/option choices around to make the list 3500 pts. Probably i'm biased, you have only 13 weapons that are S7 or better. In a 1000pts DE force i have more. I know it's typical for DE to have very many strong weapons but 13 are really very few for almost 3500pts, although your heavy bolters could really annoy me. But DE have paper armor, other armies are a lot tougher...

A good point, but I count 18... (plasma pistols, plasma guns, melta guns, lascannons, missile launchers, multimelta, plasma cannons) not to mention powerfists.

Also keep in mind that this is just based off of the miniatures that I happen to have (and trying to use as much of them as I can). =)

Oops i didn't count the power fists. In my experience termies never catch one of my vehicles in close combat...

Of course, since this is your maximum list, it can't be optimal (as well as mine isn't very good then), but you asked for critique...

You say the rhinos would just get blasted by Lascannons and what not. But you have to remember, if it makes one move, thats still got you 12 inches closer than you were. At this size of game, it doesn't really matter that you had to spend a rhino to get closer because they're so cheap. You just cannot have an army that huge and have no armour. Take at least to fire support tanks (Predator, any ordanance), but at this size I would recommend an LR or LRC. It can blow the crap outta anything and still carry people. Bargain.

Good Sir, where are your vehicles? Rhinos? Razorbacks? LRs? Dude, if you want to have a competetive army that is going to win you some games, get some Rhinos. Get about five of them. Hopefully more.

I collected that Space Marine army in a piece by piece manor, and so I never plopped down for an expensive vehicle. The only one I ever bought was a Land Raider Crusader.

Personally, while vehicles can add some fantastic punch...I feel that at the massive point level that I'm at, they'd be wasted. If I was to field vehicles, the enemy would undoubtably have as many heavy weapons as I do. As such, he'd be able to pop them open quickly and make their points a waste. Alternatively, 5 lascannons fired into a squad of Marines means five dead Marines...no more. But we'll see!

As a note...I'm playing a game with this army tonight...3500 pointer...so we'll see how it does without vehicles.

If you don't have vehicles, not only are those Lascannons you're talking about going to kill half the troops in a squad, but your opponents normal Troops are also going to get a chance to mow them down. Trust me, 5 Rhinos w/ Smoke Launchers and X-tra Armor will get your troops across the field in a much better manner than them running across the field, moving 6" a turn.

Particularly your Elites, the Terminators and Veterans. You gave your Veterans those pistols, CCWs, Power Weapons, and what-not becuase you want them in combat, not prancing across the battlefield, beheading dandelions.

I hate that most Space Marine players eventually feel the need to rush up to the enemy via Rhinos, unload one round of fire and then charge in.

Plus, I like the way it looks to have lots of troops on the battlefield. I gave the Veterans close combat weapons because they were left over Veteran Sergeant models that I had sitting around.

Another reason I don't have Rhinos...they're expensive. To add five Rhinos to this army would cost me almost $150, and that's no fun for me.
