Planetary governor Kormac stood nervously on the palace veranda, watching as the armored legions of the Space Marines disembarked from their Thunderhawks. He had called them here, called them in a last-ditch attempt to reclaim The Lost. It was his fault, he explained to the force Commander who stood a clear head and shoulders above him on the right. His responsibility the planetary emblem, the gold and silver Imperial eagle supposedly hand-presented by the Emperor himself 10 millennia ago had been lost in the raid. Apparently, the force Commander agreed. As the governor’s head fell from his shoulders, the Commander speared his seal of office from around his neck with his bloodstained power sword, and flicked it silently to the deputy governor. Then, as one, he and his troops turned and marched towards the search site, leaving the ex-governors decapitated corpse behind.

The Razorback rumbled into life, rolling forward toward the ruined complex in the centre of the battlefield and skidded to a halt, tactical squad Sixtus charging out of the door, ending up near an objective site in the complex. The close combat squad on the left flanked along the ammo dump walls, nearing a third search site near the SM lines. Alerted by this movement along the Marine lines, a Dire Avenger peered out of the ash piles across the battlefield, attempting to observe the Imperial movements and was suddenly knocked back, rewarded with a shot from the heavy weapon scouts and a score across his armour. Squad Sixtus, noting this event, aimed their bolters at the same small ash pile, but did nothing except kick up small plumes of dust as the Avengers all burrowed further into cover. However, the marine with the Lascannon swung it over his shoulder, sighted, and fired, his shot blasting through the dune, turning the sand to glass and vaporising an Avenger.

Vaulting over the crater wall, they slid to the bottom, but found the site empty, leaving them pointlessly exposed. The Guardian squad emerged from the cover of the complex and opened fire on the Close combat scouts with their anti-grav Starcannon, with the plasma bolts engulfing three of their number. The Scouts, however, merely fell to ground and did not flee, their morale holding.

Upon spotting the Eldar, the Marines transmitted a message to their battle brothers. In a response, which temporarily stunned the Eldar, the marine line was suddenly obscured by dust as the reserves arrived. On the left, tactical squad Fauk’s Rhino rolled in on the left of the ammo dump. Conversely, a five-man terminator squad marched ominously in on the right. Ready to support either squad, a second command-squad carrying Razorback emerged in the centre of the line, flanked by the Force Commander in Terminator armour on foot. The Avenger Exarch, watching all this from inside the crater, sank back to a crouch, resting on his power sword. Things were looking bad for the Eldar! Instantly moving to support, the Rhino skirted the ammo dump and disembarked its squad, who signalled the remnants of the nearby scouts. These then ran, under the cover of their fully-fledged brothers, to their designated site, and by the grace and will of the Emperor, found the emblem, unblemished and unbroken. With the objective found, squad Sixtus abandoned the pursuit of the search sites, and instead moved to consolidate the Marine lines, moving into the cover of a nearby building, while their Razorback transport reversed to gain a clear line of sight to the Avengers. The Terminators, attempting to flank the Eldar units moving up the middle, skirted down the right hand flank, their monstrous forms hidden in the sand valley. Taking a more direct approach, the Force Commander and Razorback moved directly forward, the latter deploying the command squad between the ruins of the buildings. Pressing their attack, the heavy weapon scouts opened fire relentlessly on the Dire Avengers, the sniper rifle again failing to wound, but with the Heavy Bolter felling one easily. The twin-linked heavy botlers on the Razorback let loose, but the gunner did not fare as well as the scouts, the shots exploded on the crater edge. Seemingly determined to destroy this one squad, the marines of Sixtus opened fire, but their rage at the alien menace must have tainted their aim, for only one shot hit, and that failed to cause any damage to the target Aspect Warrior. The second Razorback also utilised it’s position to fire its Lascannon at the avengers, but the shot, although hitting, actually glanced off the Eldar’s armour-these Aspects seemed to be leading charmed lives! The scouts with the objective let loose their bolt pistols, desperately trying to remove all threats to the objective near them, drilling right through the armour of a lone guardian who got too close. The storm bolters on the Rhino must have been knocked out of alignment in the recent manoeuvres, as the shots knocked only chunks from the roof of a nearby building. However, seeing how easily the guardian fell to the scouts, the tactical squad Fauk opened fire on the guardians, but did not find it so easy, for while 5 shots hit, only 1 guardian fell!

In an attempt to counter the massive Space Marine advantage, the Falcon carrying the Seer Council moved in opposite the Terminators and the Vyper flew in the centre, ready to attack either flank. The Guardian squad, boosted by this sight of friendly units moving to support, moved forward and through mass firepower managed to gun down three members of squad Faux, the Warlock’s Singing Spear accounting for a fourth. What was left of the Avenger squad opened fire on Sixtus, but failed to kill one marine, not surprising considering the Avenger’s reduced numbers by now. Of the two razorbacks, the Vyper gunner decided the one sporting the heavy bolter was the greater threat to the Eldar, and so blew it to pieces with his Bright Lance. The Falcon fired all it’s weapons at the only squad it could see-the Terminators, but only felled one man. In desperation, the Dire Avengers charged squad Sixtus, but had one of their own cut down. Knowing they’d be gunned down as they ran, the Exarch and last squad member stood fast.

Despite frantic signalling by the marines, none of their remaining reserves arrived. Determined not to let this stop them, the Terminators and Force Commander marched directly forward. The command squad threaded its way through the treacherous rubble of the ruined complex, following the sounds of scuffling behind the stone walls and finding it, the Dire Avengers who had proving themselves so troublesome. With the stormbolters now apparently fixed, the Rhino managed to kill a guardian, and squad Faux itself rapid fired at the guardians, killing four, the missile launcher accounting for a fifth. The remaining Razorback, taking the Vyper’s past actions as an omen of its own future, reversed again into line of sight and blew it out of the sky in an incandescent fireball that briefly lit the entire field. The Terminators, power fists ready, resolved to charge the hovering Falcon, but their bulky tactical dreadnought armour meant they just fell short. The command squad charged into the back of the Avengers, but no wounds were caused on either side.

Watching all these events unfold from high above the field, Baharroth and his Hawk squad Deep Striked behind the scouts carrying the emblem, while the spiders teleported in along the left flank. Replacing the Vyper, and strolling over its wreckage, the Wraithlord moved in the centre of the field, ready to support either side. Eager to protect their transport, the seer squad deployed from the Falcon, ready to combat the terminators. When the Wraithlord turned to watch these events, he spied the Force Commander creeping towards the Falcon and opened fire, the balls of plasma twice wounding the marine. The Warp Spiders sliced two marines to shreds, trying to remove the protection of the scouts, who Baharroth and the hawks then promptly shot down. Indeed, Baharroth had noted the look in the human scout’s eyes as they had stopped running on his sudden appearance with his squad, the resigned look as they dropped the relic and stood ready to be shot. “Animals to the slaughter” he thought. Baharroth ruffled his wings and looked about contentedly. Things had just got a lot better. Encouraged by all this unexpected support, the guardians opened fire on the remaining 5 tactical marines, killing four. The warlock contemptuously threw his spear at the survivor, but the wraithbone tool failed to wound the man. The Falcon let loose its entire arsenal, which did nothing to the Terminators. The 2 warlocks in the seer squad released their Destructor power on the Terminators, killing one. One Farseer, noting the shifting colours on the ash hill in the distance, cast an Eldritch Storm over it, and was gratified as two forms were blown off the hill, dead. The crackling energy pinned the rest of the scouts to the ground. In combat, the Avengers killed one marine, and the psykers of Ulthwé obliterated the Terminators before they could lift a weapon.

The Devastators marched onto the field by the pinned scouts, and immediately took stock of the situation. Things were bad. The Terminators were dead, the command squad and squad Sixtus were tied in a seemingly unending meleé in the centre of the field, and the objective had been lost. Unfazed, the Rhino driver attempted to run over the Warp Spiders, who almost contemptuously, phased out of existence for a second, causing the rhino to drive right through their non-corporeal forms. The sight of five ghostly figures of Aspect Warriors apparently moving at high speed through the vehicle while stationary was too much for the driver, who crashed and immobilised his vehicle on the silo behind. The Force Commander, true to his nature, ran toward the Seer Council, pausing only to take a few fruitless shots, and charged them. In an attempt to protect their commander from any further devastating ranged attacks, the Razorback fired at the Wraithlord, wounding it once. The Dire Avenger Exarch found himself alone in the great melee as the last member of his squad was cut down but, unfazed, he calmly turned and separated a marine’s chest from his abdomen. However, the command squad pressed into the back of the combat, and, realising it was an impossible situation; the Exarch broke from combat, running towards the ammo dump, and protection. However, the command squad pursued, and cut him down just a few metres from his goal. The force commander failed to wound any member of the seer squad and although his terminator armour saved him from a fatal wound himself, he had a sudden outbreak of common sense, and ran, but was slain by a warlock when the psykers pursued.

Moving away from the corpse of the Force Commander, the Seer council moved to engage the devastators. The warp spiders moved forwards and retrieved the emblem while the hawks flew over the Razorback, cutting off the command squad’s line of retreat. The Seers utilised all their psychic powers on the devastators, but to no avail. The Wraithlord managed to pinpoint two of the Heavy weapon scouts, leaving only the sniper alive. On the other side of the field, eager to protect the relic, the spiders killed 2 members of the command squad, the Apothecry’s frantic administrations restraining it from there being a third. However, the guardians also opened fire, killing all members of the command squad, save the commander. Baharroth, determined to remove all humans from his sight, now, ordered his squad to fire, killing the last two members of squad Sixtus. Determined, despite their previous lack of success, to kill the devastators, the Seer council charged, killing 2 with the ferocity of their attack, but the squad as a whole held fast. The warp spiders made a second jump to the relative safety of the area behind the ammo dump, everyone arriving safely. The guardians charged the nearby Fauk’s missile launcher, forcing him to flee and running him down. Baharroth, noting the impudent way the nearby commander eyed him, immediately charged his squad, but failed to wound the commander, who in return killed a single hawk.

Forsaking the emblem at the cost of restoring some Space Marine pride, the Razorback fired its twin-linked lascannons at the falcon, managing to momentarily stop its engines, a result that would little affect an imperial vehicle, but caused the alien skimmer to crash and wreck. The Land speeder, trying desperately to regain the relic, fired on the ‘Spiders, the Heavy bolter failing to penetrate their thick armour, but the Typhoon missile launcher killing both the Exarch and spider holding the objective. The seer council killed all but one of the devastators, who promptly ran straight off the battlefield. To put it bluntly, a bit of a balls up. As Dave said to me afterwards, I did not focus on the objective at all. I managed to find it in turn 2, which should have been a massive advantage, but I didn’t do my best to protect it (in my defence, most of my reserves HAD already come on just before I found the objective, but I could have moved them to support). I didn’t, that was the problem. Instead of disengaging all my forward units, and pulling them back to protect the scouts, I left them to fight, and the scouts didn’t have any support when Dave’s (speedy) attack came. Another thing. I REALLY hate all my reserves turning up like that-it’s better for reserves to come in late (though not as late as that Land Speeder!) so you can put them where they’re needed. But apart from that… J

Jeff totally failed to concentrate on the mission (and I think he forgot Swooping hawks can Deep Strike in any mission, regardless of rules. I think his Terminator’s lack of deep strike ability here hit him hard). And I didn’t have to bait him like I said, he scattered his troops just fine. And squad of the match to the Avengers! Any squad who can take that much power and tie up tactical + command squads like that deserves some respect!
