when do you progress from a newby to a guardian, and does it even make a difference at all

Ranks are just a way to promote thought-out helpful posts... When a Mod sees you've done a particularly good and helpful post you get your rank raised by 1... It's sorta a reputaionish thing, but it doesn't really mean anything...

In the grand scheme of things, does it really matter what rank you've achieved?

What's important is the contributions we all make to this community, to foster a sense of camaraderie and growth.  What you say and what you contribute will have more weight to a community than some empty "rank" for number of posts.

True that.  I don't really care what rank I am, well, it is nice not to bee a n00b, but it doesn't really matter.  As long as your contributions are sound and worthwhile then you are as  good or better than a phoenix lord who spams and doesnt put thought into their responses.  Just ask Aulan C'nesha, he spammed and lost 990ish posts worth of rank.
