General purpose Army List
« on: January 28, 2002, 06:12:23 PM »
I played the following army against Salamanders tonight - my first 40K game in 9 months.  I got hammered.

HQ: Farseer (163) - mind war, fortune, guide, singing spear, spirit stones

Elites:
A. 4 Warp Spiders + Exarch (162) - Exarch had Powerblades and an extra death spinner + withdraw
B. 9 Banshees + Exarch (189) - Exarch with Executioner and acrobatic

Troops:
A. 5 Guardian Storms + Warlock (109) - 2 Fusion gun upgrades and Warlock with conceal and witchblade
B. 9 guardian defenders + Warlock + Starcannon platform (190) - Warlock with Singing Spear and Conceal
C. 3 Rangers (57)

Heavy Spt:
A. 1 Wraithlord with Starcannon (120)
B. 3 War Walkers each with scatter laser and bright lance (270)
C. 4 Dark Reapers plus Exarch (238) - Exarch with crack shot, fast shot and Shuriken cannon.

Total 1498
-------------

The farseer had some success with the mind war and fortune, but was useless once attacked in close combat.  Spirit stones were a good idea.
The warp spiders didn't do much.  neither did the guardian defenders.
The banshees got assaulted by a dreadnaught (see my other post) and were slaughtered.
The dark reapers were great until singled out and annhilated by the land raider.  The Exarch was useless as he was always out of range.  Maybe a missile launcher?
The storm guardians were great - killed a land raider with their haywire grenades.  well worth it.
The wraithlord and war walkers were destroyed on the FIRST TURN, before I even had a chance to move them.  Being open-topped, the walkers fell to a whirlwind.  The wraithlord was sniped by scouts.  have to watch out for those sniper rifles.
The rangers did nothing as they were screened by the land raider and assaulted by terminators.

-------------

All in all I think I need to be more mobile.  The walkers seem a waste of points that may be better spent on wave serpents for my banshees and storm guardians.

Any comments?

yeah you definitely need to be more mobile...drop the warwalkers and get a wave serpent for your banshees and a vyper with a starcannon and ctm...you need larger squads of guardians because they don't survive long so i suggest you free up some points by either getting rid of the rangers or the spiders..even though i like the rangers i know that in squads of three they aren't very effective...if you decide to drop the spiders use the points to get more rangers and also a heavy weapon platform for your guardians (either brightlance or starcannon)..hope this helps

Thanks for the input dark_wind.  I definitely will get a wave serpent for the banshees, and maybe a falcon for the stormers.

Dropping the spiders and walkers will give me some room, but I think I'll keep the rangers.  A vyper or two would be handy for anti-whirlwind duties.

I changed your list around.  I didn't add up points but it should be pretty close.  Remember that a vyper dies faster than the warwalkers.

HQ: Farseer  -  guide

Elites:
B. 9 Banshees + Exarch  - Exarch with Executioner and acrobatic Add WS w/BL

Troops:
A. 9 Guardian Storms + Warlock  - 2 Fusion gun upgrades and Warlock with Enhance and witchblade & pistol.  Add WS w/BL. Haywire grenades.

B. 15 guardian defenders + Warlock + Starcannon platform  - Warlock and Embloden

C. 6 Rangers maybe 10

Heavy Spt:
A. 1 Wraithlord with Starcannon (120)
C. 4 Dark Reapers plus Exarch  - Exarch with  fast shot and missle launcher.

Put the Farseer next to reapers and just guild their shots.

I prefer WS over Falcon any day.  I'm always going to move 12" to get glancing only.  That means that I'm only going to get 1 shot.  A twinlinked brightlance is way better than the pulse laser on the falcon.  Plus I get the shield and it costs less!

Personally I don't like the odds of two fusion guns hitting when in the hands of guardians, and I find haywire grendades to expensive, but 5 Storm guardians with two flamers and a warlock with destructor in a falcon, or 9 guardians and a warlock in a serpent and now you are talking. Between the three flamer templates you can hit every member of a squad of marines (lets say 8) three times(24 hits), while between both flamers wounding on 4+(half or 8 wounded or 2 to 3 dead) the destructor will wound on a 3+( about 5 wounds wich is 1 or 2 dead) If they were just plain marines then that was about 75 points, but if they were devistators veterans, or assault marines then that could be as high as twice that. Then your storm squad can now charge in and out number the marine squad, if they didn't already run. But with fusion guns the odds are that the fusion would only kill one marine, because only one would hit. Furthermore, I don't like hunting tanks with guardians, I will usually blow up tanks with heavy wepons from a good deal away, blowing up tanks with haywire grenades is dangerous, there is the possibility that if you do damage it it will blow up and kill off most of your squad, and then what is left over will get charged by an unmolested enemy squad.
This confusion is my illusion

um... lemme see... what were you gonna do with that shuricannon??? = fast shot, 4 shots, wound 3+ ALLOW saves... that's 1 marine dead per turn... and that's on a good day... now I know you will face foes other than marines, but believe me, take the missile launcher+fastshot, works OK vs. marines, and plasma templates give alotta people nightmares. pinning+blast+ap4+TAU fire warrior=OH YEAH
